I'm looking to buy my first Jeep and I was on craigslist when i found a 1971 Jeep Willy's CJ-5.
First off it would need a new gas tank and a some new brakes. Its been sitting for 5 years. The lower units are rebuilt, has a newer dauntless 1987 231 V6 Engine, and Newer Tires.
This Jeep needs a lot of cosmetic work...its only $500
What do you guys think, and as far as a new gas tank does anybody know what that would cost?
Better check out the rust on that puppy. You don't want to be driving along and have your frame fall apart or something crazy like that. Where is it located?
Just count on having to replace a lot of stuff if its been sitting 5 years. You might find dirt dobber nests in the distributor cap and crap like that!
But then you could part it out and make more than 500.
It's in Fox Lake Illinois which sadly is flooding from a series of severe storms. If it is still on dry ground and I can get to it I might check it all out for rust and if I think it is good on rust i may get it...Apparently that V6 is "newer" so hopefully thats in good shape, says it runs. As far as fixing lots of parts I'm hoping its all exterior.
theres the link, I was looking at parts and noticed the doors don't fit the replacment doors...
is this even a CJ-5...I talked to someone about it and they said that this is a CJ-5.
I'm ready for the challenge, I'm not sure about the cost of it all but my brother has a 92? YJ...Dad has a 94 XJ...Plus we have a 90-91 spare part XJ that used to be running. I'm ready for the challenge of repairing it, plus Jeep runs in the family. I only have like $800 to spend so if this is good i can probably get that new gas tank and new brakes soon. Then the rest would have to come from a job.
Hell if your up for the challenge i say go for it. Make sure the rust isnt bad like the others said, and that the frame doesnt have any large cracks and stuff like that. But if you are mechanically sound about it then go for it. They are a blast to work on
