Buying my first Jeep...Good Deal?

I'm looking to buy my first Jeep and I was on craigslist when i found a 1971 Jeep Willy's CJ-5.

First off it would need a new gas tank and a some new brakes. Its been sitting for 5 years. The lower units are rebuilt, has a newer dauntless 1987 231 V6 Engine, and Newer Tires.

This Jeep needs a lot of cosmetic work...its only $500
What do you guys think, and as far as a new gas tank does anybody know what that would cost?

You can buy a new tank for around $150.

Better check out the rust on that puppy. You don't want to be driving along and have your frame fall apart or something crazy like that. Where is it located?

Just count on having to replace a lot of stuff if its been sitting 5 years. You might find dirt dobber nests in the distributor cap and crap like that!

But then you could part it out and make more than 500.

It's in Fox Lake Illinois which sadly is flooding from a series of severe storms. If it is still on dry ground and I can get to it I might check it all out for rust and if I think it is good on rust i may get it...Apparently that V6 is "newer" so hopefully thats in good shape, says it runs. As far as fixing lots of parts I'm hoping its all exterior.

Also what kind of gas milage do CJ-5's get?

Thanks for the Reply

It is a CJ-5. You can tell by the hump in the rear of the door opening.

The ad says its been sitting for 4 years, so there's going to be a lot of things to replace.

I'm ready for the challenge, I'm not sure about the cost of it all but my brother has a 92? YJ...Dad has a 94 XJ...Plus we have a 90-91 spare part XJ that used to be running. I'm ready for the challenge of repairing it, plus Jeep runs in the family. I only have like $800 to spend so if this is good i can probably get that new gas tank and new brakes soon. Then the rest would have to come from a job.

Hell if your up for the challenge i say go for it. Make sure the rust isnt bad like the others said, and that the frame doesnt have any large cracks and stuff like that. But if you are mechanically sound about it then go for it. They are a blast to work on

Cus we ride like cowboys towards the sun, Life aint fun when your on the run, You got your gold and you got your gun, But your life as an Outlaw has just begun.

Got your shotgun by your side, Got your horse and you got to ride, You ride till there aint no place to hide, Its sad cus us badguys always Die.
