CJ Cluster problem

My dash cluster is not all working. The gas gauge does not work and the temp does not work.

Both units are sending to the cluster, but nothing registering on the dash.

I am not that technical...Are there fuses to check or a diagram to look at. The PO may have done something wrong.

Thanks

did they just stop working, or have they not worked since you've owned the jeep?

Have not worked and I'm just now getting into it. The PO has no idea. Knew I would need to figure it out. Any ideas?

if you are getting an OHM reading at the wires right where they go into the gauge then it is a bad gauge.

The sending unit can be checked with an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the round sender post (pink wire) and ground.

fuel gauge resistance:
73 ohms Empty
23 ohms 1/2 tank
10 ohms Full

temperature gauge resistance:
The sending unit can be checked with the following resistances between the post and ground...

Totally Cold high resistance
Slightly Warm 73 ohms
Beginning of Band 36 ohms
End of Band 13 ohms
Hot 9 ohms

behind the gauge cluster, the copper bars that attach the fuel and temp gauge is usually the problem. They are actually resistors to step down the voltage. Complicated damn things to me, but simple in design...I have a friend get mine working. He specializes in 1972-1975 CJ5s and CJ6s, so I lucked out. My gas gauge is a little off, but no more than 1/8 of a tank incorrect.

1976 and newer are close to the same as mine...Need to talk to an old jeep mechanic, I hate electrical stuff....lol
