CJ5 Doors

I'm about to buy a 1976 CJ5 and I have noticed that the doors are hinged off the rear of the tub and latch towards the front under the windshield, so they open opposite to most other Jeeps I've seen.
I'm new to everything about Jeeps. An old guy I work with was trying to sell this Jeep and I fell in love the moment I got behind the wheel. I'd like to put new doors and soft top on it but this hardtop is in decent shape and I kinda like the doors looking different.
Any insight on this subject? Does anyone think this hardtop is an original??

I think the only top option in 76 was a soft top. With the doors you are describing I would say somebody modified it.

The guys who really get, um, detailed about CJ5 stuff hang out at earlyCJ5.com. Get them a picture, and someone will have the details.

Hardtops were definitely available back then, but were frequently dealer installed options (remember when pickup trucks came with no rear bumper, and they were installed at the dealer?). It makes it tough to state "original" or not, though.

I've never heard of suicide doors, but it's certainly possible.

The top would be metal. This is from the 60's, but it would be close:
