CJ5 with a steel top

I found a 1980 cj5 with a steel top. Who or what company made these tops to fit the CJ5 and were there any modifications made to make these tops work. Any information would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

There have been lots of soft and hard top manufacturers over the years. By 1980 I think most had switched to fiberglass, although I wouldn't be very surprised if someone was still making steel tops.

I think all tops from 1976 to 1983 are interchangeable. There was a slight change to the windshield in 1976, so earlier tops dont' fit right. (I think).

You might find manufacturer info in the window glass - it's frequently etched in.

Otherwise, take a few photos and post them here, and maybe at www.earlycj5s.com - those guys can probably tell just from a glance.

found this Link sounds like they had factory hard tops available in 1980.

Just to mention a few manufacturers...Meyers, Sears, Acme. Meyers usually had a badge on them as did Sears. There are others, don't know them all, but these ones I have seen before. Meyers made alot over the years.

As Geoff stated...pre-1976 hardtops will not fit 1975 and earlier. Different windshield frames and angles...1976 and up are slanted back farther.

I have a metal half top that came on a 1968 cj-5 I bought, at first I wanted to remove it but it seems to be rare, at least I haven't come across but 1 picture online with a half metal top that year
