No its a good question. As far as time it would be quicker to swap tubs...no doubt.

I'm just into using the original tub.

I've done harder work...take a look. before and after. It had a rusty floor, door jam and bent rocker.

On the car I changed the rocker, partial quarter/door jam, floor pan, radiator support and roof skin.

More progress tonight. I removed the replacement brace since I am using the original one. I also mocked up the driver's side panel. Looks like it will fit pretty nice. I am about 1/2 way done cleaning the welding surface.

I have cut out the panel to weld in the "Jeep" logo on the replacement panel. It only needs some final grinding before welding in place.

Welding started today!

Well the "Jeep" stamp is welded on. Still have to do some minor body work with bondo to smooth it out but looks ok. I have painted the back of the panel and also drilled the holes for spot welding on the front piece and have the back piece marked. The 2nd picture is hard to make out but the passenger side support welds had all broken. The metal is thin in spots but I got everything welded back up together and lined up. I have one small piece to make but it will work out just fine.

Driver's Side is welded on!!

I ended up stitch welding the connectiong to the rear panel and to the cowl panel because I couldn't get the welder in to spot weld. The panels lined up pretty well. I have alot of grinding left and a few more spot welds to do but overall things went pretty smooth!

I sprayed a weld through primer on yesterday so that there would be protection between the metal. I also plan on putting seam sealer around the flanges and covering in herculiner. Should make a nice water barrier.

I check door fitment after getting done and everthing line up nicely.

Driver's Side Body Mount Repair.

The mount was all but gone due to holding mud inside the channel. I cut the floor out above channel and drilled the spot welds out and removed the rusted section. I still need to remove the mount itself. Once I remake the section I can spot weld it back in; reinstall the mount and move on to more full stuff.

Welding sheet metal really isn't that bad. I'm no pro for sure. I just weld very cold. Usually have the welder between 1 and 2 (basically low as it will go). Keep from burning as bad but if you go slow makes just as good a weld.

I found the panel on ebay. Got lucky. I checked every few weeks and it just happen to be on there. Only had a hour left....almost missed it. '76 and '77 cj7's tub are a little different and all the repop panels are for the later models and require modification. I actually paid less than $200 for it if I remember....including shipping.

Made more progress this morning.

I finally got the body mount off where it had rusted. What a pain!

Passenger side has been sprayed w/ weld-through primer. I also got the rust holes where the old roll bar sat welded up. I put a patch piece on the underside and welded it in. Welded from the top down. Painted with rust-stop paint and then put a piece to cover it all up.

Tons of progress made today.

Started out repairing some rust through the "bed" part of the tub.

Here are some before and after pics. I still have fill in the connection point with seam sealer.

Passenger Side Panel Installed

Primed and painted the inside after drilling the spot weld holes.

Panel went on pretty nicely.

Next welding job is the corner. I had it mocked up before I welded everything in so they would line up since.

I think so. I have been thinking that if I want to change colors now would be the time. The factory color is sky blue...I like blue but its "prius blue"..lol

I'll probably go back red. I have the motor and seats trimmed in red.

We painted it with implement tractor paint w/ hardner several years ago. It holds up well on the trails so it would probably go back IH red again!
