CJ's No Computer

Are all the CJ's computer free? Had a 72 (new) and getting to feel the need to build/restore a CJ. Want to make sure I am computer free or EMP proof.

EMPs do not affect just computers......they can affect ANY electronics (transistors, diodes, etc....) only way to be REALLY sure is to have spares of ANY of those kinds of components in EMP resistant containers.

BTW... no such thing as EMP proof....

Had 75CJ5, 89YJ, 93YJ. Have 82CJ7 & 95YJ____Not one burnt yet due to lack of relays.

Thanks bc3, have to study up a little more. However still are the CJ's pretty much computer free for all years offered?

NOT ALL CJs are computer free

I believe like from 82 and up or around there jeep used a computer to control the carb and some emissions functions. My 85 CJ & had a computer on it. I Nuttered it and the computer and all that excess wiring went bye bye. The computer is behind the glove compartment on top of the heater box. If you have a diagnostic port on the right side of where the body mounts you have a computer on board. It can be disabled easily, but don't just go hacking on the wires you will probably cut one that doesnt need to be cut. Search for the John Nutter Bypass. Hope this helps

cj5's and under arent affected by EMP's, they use generators, I dont know about the 7's, if they use a generator instead of an alternator, then they are EMP proof, if a vechile uses a generator, it has NO computers in it at all(thank God)

Jeep Started using alternaters in the 60's. CJ7's and CJ5's are the same under the hood. 1982-1986 CJ's have a computer and a electronic ignition module!
It is easy to bypass them !
The Nutter bypass or change out the Dist for HEI and the carb for a Mc2100 or weber! Done. leave the computer in place and it will run the gauges, no problem.
1972 starts the long nose intermediate CJ's till 1975
1976 starts the big change in drivetrain and added the CJ7 beside the CJ5.
