Found this in a barn...

So I ran I to an older gentleman the other day that told me had an 83 cj7 that the clutch was so stiff he couldn't drive it anymore.

Jokingly I asked what he wanted for it and when he told me the price and about the CJ I bought it sight unseen.

I have a tj so I didn't really need another jeep but I couldn't resist.

So I show up at the guys place this morning and this is what I had bought

He's owned it since new. He has swapped in a Chevy 350 and it has a 4 speed.

I'm not sure what tranny though maybe you guys can help me.

It's a 4 speed with reverse all the way to the left and down. I've googled and cant seem to find it.

I know what you're gonna say but I didn't crawl under it and look for any numbers markings etc..

Just thought maybe you guys would have an idea

Seriously!!

Interior is in great shape.

He gave me a bikini top the original wheels and the back seat.

The back seat was covered up in a shed.

He said he took it out the day he bought it and it has never been in the jeep.

Oh, this guy also gave me a set of half doors.

I had asked a lot of questions before I bought it but I honestly couldn't believe what I had just done.

On the drive home the whole thing Just seemed surreal. Lol

Now, that was such a hot steal, it gives a new meaning to the term "barn Burner".

That was a steal. Easily worth 2 to 3 times that at a minimum.

The trans is probably an SM465 and that would likely be the first choice behind any Chevy engine for a 4 speed.

SCORE! Congratulations on an awesome deal. While it won't be as smooth of a driver as a TJ, CJ's are way cooler and their value will only continue to go up.

Very nice. I just got a 65 for a steal and I have a lot of work to get it that condition!!! Keeps everyone hopeful that they can be as lucky.

The very first new car I ever bought was a 86 CJ7. Loved the thing but it only had the 4 cylinder in it and that engine was horrible. It was garnet red with same color interior and top. Had to get the NOLES color......

Chevy 350... with a carburetor...

Reverse left & back..

I think an old Camaro with a Saginaw 4 speed.

If it has a granny low gear it could be a sm465 GM trans or a t-18. But when I put my first chevy motor in my cj I was able to buy an adaptor so it bolted to the jeep T176 4 speed which was more like a car 4 speed . If the rest of the drive train is stock , AMC corporate 20 rear and dana 30 front I'll bet it's a T176.

They built them both ways. 1960s GM pickups had reverse left and back. So did some early Camaros. I think you can adjust the linkage to change it.

Lucky dude. Was the old man on his death bed or his wife making him sell it?
