headers vs stock manifold?

I am taking out my blown 258 & putting in a 304. The stock manifolds are shot on the 304. Anyone have an opinon about headers vs stock manifolds specifically on the 304. I had headers on my 258 and had no problems. Just not sure about the V8.

My cj has always had fenderwell long tube headers. They look cool and sound nice. Real common for cj's.

Your other options are shorty headers (only edelbrock makes and are $$) or in-frame long tube headers.

I have never ran manifolds on my cj but I would say they are like any other car. Headers let the engine breathe a little better making a few more horses. Long tube headers pickup some low end torque as well.

I just happen to have a new set for sale. I am buying in-frame headers because I am building my jeep for more rocks than mud. If you are interested I will cut you a deal on them.

Does that help?

Thanks for the offer, but I think i'm going to go with the in-frame full length option with a pipe exiting under each corner panel. I had my one pipe from my current 258 come straight out the back, but the exhaust in the cab was terrible. By turning the pipe to exit out the corner, most of the exhaust was able to get away from the jeep and not in the cab. Have you looked around to find the best headers for your in-frame set up?

Well I did some looking and from searching I went with Hedman long tubes. I bought them from summit racing for $209 with good gaskets. Actually ordered them this week. Couldn't beat the price and couldn't find anybody with fit issues. You can pay more for a better coating.

Perfect. Do you plan on installing them soon? I will be buying the same setup, so I'm anxious to see how they fit. Thanks

They came in today. Going to paint them with high heat paint. Should install this week some time.

I'm curious to hear how your header install went? I plan on ordering some later this week. I'm still turning a wrench on my 304 prior to installing it.

I have not done it yet. I already have my fenders off so that helps. Also going to remove the steering shaft since I have a new one. The passenger side is going to be tight between the frame and the starter.

I bought some ceramic paint and cured it 1x but when it did the black paint showed through some (I painted color close to ceramic). So I repainted them last night and going to recure them. Try to see if I can get them to stay looking good longer.

Should install next week.

Headers are in. Posted pics in my lift install thread.

Went in pretty easy. Removed my fenders and steering shaft and dropped right in.

Very close to starter and clutch linkage so will wrap around those areas. Exhaust is straight forward.

the worst thing with in frame headers is that it makes it imposable to adjust your clutch. In fact im takin mine off my CJ5 and going with fenderwell for that very reason.

Headers look great. I got mine in the mail but they sent fenderwell exit, and I ordered in frame. So I'm debating on sending them back or changing my setup. I'm leaning toward sending them back...
