Hello, my name is John and I now have a CJ

Hi there. As the wife isn't going to let me mod the heck out of her Rubi I brought home an old CJ5.

I am really excited to start fixing her up.

Going to be a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it in the end.

Well, I am not certain yet as I am new to wheelin. All my previous mechanical experience has been on Bikes and cars...

I am going to have to do this as it comes. The 302 in it is suposed to run, the 3 speed and the transfer case are not in it but were included in the sale. I have a running 327 and chev tranny/transfer case I can use too, but I am going to take it slow, ask questions and listen to advice. I want to understand what I have before I go making any big changes. I was told that from the looks of it this one has been a racer and I don't even know what all the parts piled in it are yet...

I have been told by the boss to get the transmission changed out in the Infinity I have in the driveway before I can pull the CJ into the garage.

Easy for her to say, her TJ runs....

I just want to make something I can take pretty much anyplace, don't have to worry about dings and scratches and can say I did the work myself. That would make me happy.

Well, I got her off the trailer last night. Wife swept as much of the snow off as she could and then we covered everything up with a tarp.

My friend gave me a steering column today. It is a straight one, has some kind of eagle on it so I am guessing it came out of a Thunderbird. Whatever, I have a steering column!

I am really excited about getting to work on my Heep.

lol, I'm John as well

Don't have a CJ, though, have a DJ. It's a Right handed 2WD version that delivered mail for 31 years. (I'm probably the "weird guy"... everybody tells me that there's always one, but I've never met any, so there's a good chance it's usually me)

Incidentally... a 327 isn't the best choice for an off road vehicle. Off road you want torque, and the "long stroke" engines (normally) have more of it, and the "short stroke" (such as a 327) usually are built more for horses...

Being an 8, it's probably plenty for a CJ, but off road, the 327 might make it harder to avoid wheel spin. I had that exact problem with my wife's last truck with a Chevy 323 in it... you can work with it, but you gotta work to work with it...

That's somebodies handy work in the rear....not anything near stock. The intermediate jeeps have the same suspension geometry as the later cjs. Also, after looking at your grill, you have the 1971 and older turn signals on the front...are you sure you have a definite 1972?

Front looks fine...same as all the cjs with narrow axles.

Well, the front end is all different metal than the rest of the car. It came with another whole front end. I was told that by the markings on the side of the tub that this was somebody's dirt track racer or something, which might account for the different suspension in the rear...?

Oh! I picked up the tranny and the transfer case today. looks like a t-90 and a dana 20 straight through. It appears this one is for a Chevy so I guess I will be using the 327 after all.

Well, I haven't posted about my CJ project as I never got to start on it. A million projects, work burying me and some young girl hit my wife's Rubi at an uncontrolled intersection the other day. Getting the Tomb Raider back together is obviously the priority, so... yeah.

Anyhow, got the garage cleaned out and the CJ pulled into it!

I am going to start with a good cleaning and see what I have for parts. I did get a decent set of 32's from a friend to replace the worn out, going flat 31's that were on it. I also picked up a Dana 44 top steer for the front to replace the 35.

I am thinking I will lay out all the parts and figure out what I have, kinda go from there.

I will get some pics and updates in here soon.

Thumbs up hello, my name is John and I now have a CJ

appears to be a '72 body (if that what the VIN shows) with a '71 front clip. by the way, it won't fit, as the fenders and hood are three inches or so too short. you can make the grille work with little or no effort. for the difference between torque and such with a 327 vs. 350, don't worry too much about that. camshaft profiles can make up for almost anything. if that don't work, think gears. I don't know why, but I'm thinking possibly your Jeep might have been an ice racer, or something. those rear bars are beefy. you won't need a lift kit, just eliminate those bars, and get three inches of lift. good luck on your project. your life will never be the same. but only in a good way.
