Joining CJ5 World...Jeep In A Basket...Garage Find

I took a plunge this week and bought a 1980 CJ5...well, more like all the pieces in a basket, if you will. I think the pictures kind of tell the story but here is a quick rundown:
Original body, fenders, hood, frame, etc. All is in very good condition, considering.
New GM V6 and tranny, just sitting on frame.
Soft top (original it appears, but looks like it will crumble when picked up).
Doors are there.
Grill and dash in excellent condition.
Original seats but one is pretty shredded.
Lots and lots of parts in boxes...I have no idea if it's all there until I get it back to my shop, pulled all apart and inventoried.

Guys, I haven't hardly turned a wrench in 40 yrs. I bought a '95 YJ a couple of months ago and it's "ok" but just really isn't what I wanted so I'm selling it and tackling this. I have Jeep friends here locally to help and I'm sure I'll be asking questions here in the forum also.

Hopefully not a bad deal for $1,200...heh.

Here are a few pics of how she sits now.

Welcome! Looks like fun! Ask away with questions. I'm sure somebody will know.

I just finished my project.

Since it's down that far I would strip it to the frame and start fresh. strip frame, POR-15 or paint it and work your way up.

What is it about your YJ you don't like that having a CJ will cure? That CJ is smaller and harder to get in and out of.

It's more of the "old school" look that I like. It's just me and the dog so space doesn't matter to me at all. If I don't like it when I'm done, I'll sell it and buy something else.

Sounds like an awesome find! I will say that the new engine looks a bit out of place right now, but in good time it will fit right in, I'm sure. I have been scouring local ads and craigslist for a similar project. Looking forward to your build. Please keep us up to date!

Lol...yeah, the engine/tranny are just "hangin" in there right now. These pics were all taken in the garage where I bought it...I don't even have it back to my shop yet. I'm anxious to get it there, lay everything out and get started. I'll have some good time to spend on it this winter when work is slow...my therapy time so to speak.

Keep looking...this one was on CL and right here in my hometown. Good luck.

Good project, I agree! I have had 2 YJ's and a TJ. I liked my CJ's and kept the CJ, sold the rest!
Nothing against the YJ's and TJ's but if you are a tinkerer and fab guy, you will like a CJ. Smaller? yep and thats what made Jeeps so capable and able!

You didn't give any specs! looks a 4.3? what trany.. 3speed?
has a model 20 rearend and still has the two piece axles!

I know projects are fun, but ever think about swapping out the grill, hood and fenders onto the YJ? That will give you F/I, which is something that would be nice in a CJ.

Or swap out the front front end for immediate satisfaction until the rest of the build is done.

That looks like a good project for sure, very interested to see how this comes along. If you run into any problems or have any questions, shoot em out here. I'm a bit of a CJ purist, so I'd say sell the GM powerplant and drop in a 258 or a 360 once you get the body off the frame to start. Up to you though. Be sure to keep us posted!
