Looking at a cj, what do u guys think?

CJ-7 1985

Talked to the seller, looks like rust under body armor and some where roll bar bolts down. No clue where the 360 v8 came from. Has 4 spd trans. No clue on rear diff or trans case at this point. He is supposed to send pics of all when he gets home...Whats your thoughts guys? I have a 01 tj with 54k miles That is to nice to wheel so just looking for another jeep I can abuse without feeling bad.

Well you will get noticed in that rig.

Hard to find a cj with no rust. Check the rust by the front body supports at the bottom of the dash in the floorboards. Also check the subframe of the tub under the front seats. Mine rusted there and I had rusty sides and corners.

My guess on the drivertrain is a t18 with a Dana 20 transfer case. Probably swapped it all from a Cherokee. If not it is a t176 with a d300, which I like better.

Rearend is most likely a amc 20. Rear cover should be round and look like a bowl. Common to break since they had 2 pc axles but most have been replaced. Chance it could be a d44 but would have been changed.

My concern would be gearing and lockers. It came with 2. Something gearing from the factory. With those axles you greatly improve your chances of breaking axles running 37s.

Also that tall makes it very high center of gravity increasing chances to lay it over.

I understand. I'll take a look. I'm outside looking at the storm right now.

I looked them over. I guess it is purple. Pretty nice hardtop and doors...not damage seen.

Well he has added the front hoop to make a decent trail cage. Same thing I am in the process of doing.

Don't know on the drivetrain but it is a amc 20 rearend.

I don't know why it is double shocked. Maybe somebody else knows.

Rust doesn't look awful as far a structure. You can see it creeping up on the front and rear of the rocker guards. That is where the tub framework runs..metal on metal to the sheetmetal....rusts there overtime.

But if you get a trail rig no sense in buying a pristine. Could do a YJ swap later. My jeep was far far worse.

Tires looks to have pretty decent tread.

What do you plan on doing? Mud?, Hills?, trails?

Here is the thing. CJ's have been around for a while. Had multiple owners and most mistreated them. Most ended up in mud. There are a lot out there and have been built multiple ways.

A real deciding factor would be gear ratio, transfer case and lockers for me.

I asked the seller if he knew gear ratio and weather or not it was locked...He had no clue. I'm planning on a daily driver only a few miles each way and to hit the trails on the weekend. Not into mud bogging at all. Just want to climb to the top of the world and not break down. Probably hit tsf a bit with it.

That sux. My guess he has been driving it on the road or some mud. It reminds me a lot of mine from years ago.

Here is what I see and my opinion. Purple will get old quick. Due to the lifts and tires it will be hard to drive and everything is probably stressed and needs replacing. Axles are weak and will need lockers and gears to make it match the tires and it still will have weak axles. No spare and carrier. Wiring has been hacked on too from all the gages and switches.
I highly doubt it is setup for jeep trails. Looks more like it wheeled with 80s 4x4s.

I saw a cj that was beautiful for around $7k and was setup very nice. Let me see if I can find it.
