I was hoping someone may know if this top & doors are original or homemade? The guy trying to sell it said its a 1971 model. Looks like a v6 maybe a 225 Buick? He wants $12,000 for it. What do y'all think?
That is an orginal after market cab, and yes, pre-1972 had the Buick "Dauntless" V-6 engine during the Kaiser era, before AMC started to integrate and change over the line up for Jeeps. Nice looking restore and the Buick 6 is a very good engine in the short-nose CJ5s, but a little pricey for my taste...even though it is pretty much completed/restored. I'd pay that for a correct restoration jeep to factory specs...down to the correct wheels and tires, but....that's just me....
Thanks for the reply. The only thing I didn't care for on it is the rims, tires & the price. I'm not that knowledgeable on older Jeeps. A friend of mine had a 78 cj5 when I was younger. It had a steel half cab like in the link you sent but the back window was much smaller. It came on it when he bought it new. It had a 304 v8 & a 4 speed stick.
I had a 78 Renegade with a 304 V8 for about 3 months. I bought it from a Repo Man that I used to work with on a construction crew during the summer when I was in college. Paid $1200 in June, sold it for $3000 in August before I went back to college...good return for beer money and Frat dues...lol. It was a 4 speed also, but reverse was ripped out along with first gear, but it took off fine in second gear, and I parked it where I didn't need reverse. It was just a toy and I didn't need it, so I sold it. Had more holes and rust in the body than swiss cheese, but the rest of it was pretty decent.
If you want a jeep to trail run and be able to be comfortable, the later year cjs are better (1976 and up). My 72 has no power steering and no power brakes, which is what you get with the pre 1972 stuff as well. If you are tall, forget about being comfortable, unless you change the seat mounts/seats and notch out the driver side fender well for more seat movement to get some leg room.
New paint right before a sale is always a red flag to me. A magnet might be worth 12k to you.
I think the top is a Meyers. Tailgate appears to be someone's custom job. I believe the stock ones of that era are "Jeep" stamped in bold. It apparently had a swing out rear tire carrier and with the remaining left side brackets painted over, I suspect it was a quickie paint job.
