rear locker

Hi everyone new member,just got a 83 cj7 my question is how do you lock it in? it clunks when pressure is supplied, and it does turn both wheels,but it just doesn't sound right. is it auto?

You need to turn the hubs on the front axle from 2wd to 4wd. Then put the t-case in 4hi or 4lo range.

Also, after putting transfer case into 4wd, go backward about 5-10'. Should "lock" it in.

Oops. Thought you were talking about 4wd in general...I missed the rear axle locker part. Well, if both wheels are actively turning when under pressure, then you have a functioning locker. But if it's loud then you may have problems. I'd take off the diff cover to inspect the gear teeth for excessive wear or broken pieces.

Might be a lunch box locker. Also you might have a excessive slop in the r&p. Or you could have a chipped tooth or teeth.

You can pull the cover or you can run it till it breaks.
