Should I buy this???

Ok, I found this sitting in a garage a couple of streets down from me. I knocked on the door and asked if he would be willing to sell it and he said "sure, why not". I took it for about a 30 min test drive and everything seems to be functioning properly. I think this would be a great build. But I am not too familiar with older model Jeeps (I own 2 JK's). So any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

For some reason, it won't let me make the picture bigger. It's an 83 Scrambler, 114k miles, new Dana 300 TC, 4sp. He's asking 10k.

As far as the price goes, here are my thougths: I do know that in Texas, Jeeps tend to hold their value well. That being said, $10,000 seems a little bit high to me. I am not basing that off of my knowledge of CJs, I am basing that off of my immense knowledge of JKs and YJs. I would be comfortable with this at around $6,000-$8,000. He is correct that the Scrambler is somewhat rare, but unless you have your heart set on a Scrambler, I would not pay much more than a regular CJ8 would go for.

Restoration: I would ask ALOT of questions, the first being: Who did the work? A true professional restoration adds value whereas a garage restoration is not something that I would add value for. With a garage restoration you just have no sure way of verifying that everything was done exactly correct. As you know with your other Jeeps, when you buy a used one, you buy all of the PO's mistakes.

Thanks BU, I'm gunna go look at it again after work today and I'm taking a buddy (who owns a 4x4 specialty shop here in town) as well to see what he can see. He does tons of Jeep restoration work and he knows what to look for.

It does appear to have a shackle reverse on the front, and why is the paint screwed up on the passenger side rocker? cj-8's are nice but for a few K more you could get a Tj unlimited rubicon in nice shape with about the same miles if you look.

I know everyone says that scramblers are "rare", but I sure see them ALL the time! They're not as common as a 5 or 7, but they're certainly not rare. I don't see the attraction myself. Too much hanging off the back. Having said that, I agree with the price range of around $8,000.

I agree with the posts above.

It's not a steal of a price. $8k range would be more appriopiate IMO because it's not restored...just cleaned/fixed up.

If you don't want a scrambler then I'd probably pass. It doesn't hav overdrive. Unless it has been regeared it will off for trail riding.

Don't get me wrong Scramblers are sweet but they aint no JK. Coming from a guy that drives a CJ as a dd about 1/2 the time.

Probably a bit high on price - he's confusing what he put into it and what he can get out of it. If you decide to buy, please leave it be - don't hack it, bob it, or #### with it. They are classics and should be treated with respect.

After all was said and done, I offered him 6500. He said to let him sleep on it and will let me know by Saturday. I want a "build" and my grandpa used to have one so that is MY attraction to them. Oh, and it has a model 20 rear and has been geared to 3.54.

Found out the mismatched paint is due to a fiberglass part that replaced a rusted out panel. Would it really be that hard to find a steel replacement and weld in place?

Make sure he didn' swap the wide track axles for narrow track axles. NT axles came with 3.54 gears factory. NT's are 4" narrower.

No. Steel replacements are sold on ebay, jc whitney, 4wd, quadratec......

Some are better quality than others but they are out there.

I would find out how much of it is glass, glass tend to blow apart in a wreck or impact on the trail, metal bends... I like metal far better.

Now I'm sure the guy's got more than that in it but, for 10G I would like to have seen the engine detailed out a little. that being said that frame must of cost 2G at least! Now what's with all the rust repair? I'm from the North east and thought that Taxas rigs were all rust free like AZ or NM or is it salt air? if so that's almost worse than our road salt because it's 24/7 where as ours is only a small part of the time and we have the summer to clean it off? Just a couple of thoughts.

I would have grave concerns about the rust repair. Bring a magnet, I think that paint may be hiding a lot of problems, and anyone who patched in fiberglass....

If the rust is that bad, it's not going to stop without proper treatment. The best (and most expensive) replacement panels are here: Classic Enterprises - Restoration, Reproduction Parts for Studebaker, Jeep & Ford

Rust free? Depends on what part of Texas. West Texas is desert with no rust, south and east Texas is high humidity and is coastal, north Texas is the lower plains. So a Texas jeep could have been used in west Texas for 30 years with little rust, or it could have spent 30 years on the beach.

wish I still had the picture, but not long ago I saw an ad in the auto trader for a "rare" anniversary edition camaro, in one of the little "eye grabber" bubbles it said "RARE!!" and in the other, it said "TWO AVAILABLE!!" We had us a good laugh at that one
