What did I get into?

Hi everyone ,
I am a new jeep owner.... Okay, well let me start. I am a old harley man at heart and I have never had a jeep. My wife has always wanted a jeep , we live in the mountains and see several jeeps around here. Long story short....I came across a post on an online ad for a cj5 for sale at a decent price...It's a project to say the least, and I have no idea what the costs are gonna be. It's an inline 6cyl, with pretty much all new parts...new carb, new engine, new clutch, new suspension, new maxxis tires, new brake lines, new fenders, new.... just about everything. The seller gave me about a thousand boxes of used and new parts. I cranked it at his house and it ran like crap. I got it home and put the new electronic distributor (one of the tousand boxes) in it and now it won't even fire....???? I made sure I was @5deg off tdc like the book says but still no fire....what did I get into?

welcome to the forum. jeep rookies often don't realize that JEEP is an acronym for
Just Empty Every Pocket. the cj's, especially, take a lot of work to get running and keep running, but when you do it is totally worth it. i cannot offer you much advice on how to fix this particular problem, but i'm sure jpdocdave will be here shortly to help you figure it out.

hey and welcome. nice bike to, shovelhead man myself.

i love cj's but they are some work. wouldn't be suprised if you have some bum parts floating around that box. make sure you set the timing with vacuum advance disconnected and plugged if you got it running at all..

i'd probably put the other distributor back on, make sure timing and all is good, and go from there. good luck, and put up some pics, we like to see pics.

That looks like a HEI distributor. Are you sure everything (wires) have been installed correctly?.
Here are just a few links:
Jeep/AMC HEI's

GM HEI ignition upgrade

Jeep Engine: AMC 258 I6 - - Jeep at Off-Road.com
These are just a few so good luck and you will enjoy your new hobby. Oh and don't forget TEAMRUSH for pretty much all your electrical questions.

cj's are like kids or pets. You love them to death but they sometimes drive you crazy. Not sure what kind of carb is on it, but if its a stock carter the issue with those was the tube's inside it get clogged if you clean them it will run much better.

Fired up

Hey everyone,
Back for my brief stint @ home from work this weekend. I had time enough to put the old distributor back in and reset the timing. I rebuilt the carb, and after figuring out that the fuel pump wasn't working , ha ha.......she fired up ...first crank. I'm still having trouble with small backfiring....what is causing this?
After running, I noticed a large puddle of oil on the ground, valve cover gasket leaking like a sive...I've still got alot of work to do. Thanks for all of your help.

well, let me throw my two cents at ya....what kind of fuel pressure you running to the carb?....lookin' to have 3 psig, I have mine set at 2.5...that keep it from over pressurub from a stock fuel pump...
