ZJ drivetrain?

Would the complete motor, trans (auto) and transfer case from a ZJ go into a CJ-7 without a lot of hassle? I know I would need all the electronics for the motor and trans. Just an idea I'm thinking over because of the cheap prices on old Grands compared to used wranglers. I know a custom engine harness will not be cheap but how bad can it be? John

Yes, but also look at XJ's. You will also need a new front axle, based on the t-case drop. The XJ had the HP30 for most of its production run, look at 94 to 99 years. Most xj's came with the np231 t-case most zj's only had that case the 1st year or two of production. The dana 44 in the zj is crap, so just keep walking. for a rear axle ford 8.8 would work well, or if you can find one a xj dana 44. The xj 8.25 rear is not a bad axle in the 97 and up's but not a ton of aftermarket support.

I do know to look for the correct transfer case in the ZJ's I bought 3 of them new and ordered the standard case with low range most didn't come that way. I'm just going to pick up parts along the way as I find them. My CJ has a 304 in it now but my TJ in daily driving has at least as much torque and I could get the fuel injection that way. How about the transmission is there much computer involvement there? I'm thinking around a 95 ZJ setup. I'm pretty sure the newer you get the more complex it gets. Thanks

I'd run a Scout Dana 44 rear end.

the ZJ trans isn't the best out there. I would highly recommend hunting for an XJ with and AW4

So it's sounding like the 4.0 from a ZJ (because of price) AW4 from an XJ and a 231 from any of them. My thought had been to buy a whole donor ZJ for the electronics and completeness of the motor and all brackets, but if I use a XJ trans what year did the XJ go to the electronic speedo? I'd like to keep my mechanical speedo in the CJ. I'll be keeping my eye out for scout or a early Bronco rear (our local pick a part has one sitting in their hold fence) Thanks

I am doing the same swap in my YJ right now. They 95 ZJ that I picked up has the 318 and 46 RH tranny which was used behind the Cummins diesels in the early 90's. That tranny should be more than strong enough for my wrangler. I will need to find a 231 somewhere. My wrangler is an 87 and I do not want to put the 207 back in it.

Still kicking this around. How about a 4.0 from a ZJ a AW4 from a XJ and keep my Dana 20 case? I live in upstate NY and still dream of wheeling my own Jeep in Moab. hence the overdrive trans. I like my locking hubs and will put 1pc. axles in the AMC 20 Thanks, John

Because I have the Dana 20 already, and I always play gently with my toys. I would really prefer a lighter case but want to stay with my stock front end. And money is always an issue.

Check out my old build thread, Back to Basics: Building on a Budget
