I'll update this thread as the dates draw closer.

This fall the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA) will be retracing the route of the second US ARMY Transcontinental Motor Convoy across the United States, along the BANKHEAD HIGHWAY. The 1920 route began at the Ellipse, in Washington, DC and ended at Balboa Park, in San Diego, CA – some 3,300 miles and 116 days later.

The MVPA is underway with detail planning to conduct a 95th Anniversary Convoy with as many as 120 Historic Military Vehicles that will retrace the original 1920 Transcontinental Motor Convoy route – along the Bankhead Highway. The MVPA 2015 Bankhead Convoy ("BH-15") will launch from Washington, DC on Saturday, 19 September, 2015 and arrive in San Diego, CA some 29 days later, on Saturday, 17 October.

Some key points around this major project:

  • This is a Convoy of Historic Military Vehicles – of all eras, from WWI through to military vehicles recently released from our Military.
  • The Convoy includes vehicles traveling the entire length of the original route, and those that are joining for a region of the route. They may travel for a day, several days or several hundred miles.
  • Daily stopping points are planned to be at locations used by the 1920 Convoy where practical.
  • The Convoy plans to establish a static display of the BH’15 Convoy Military Vehicles at each of our lunch stops and overnight encampments or bivouacs.
  • The entire BH’15 Convoy team looks forward to reaching out to our Veterans and current Service Members and their families to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Here is an overall map of the route and the schedule of planned stops. The lunch stops are in red and the over-night stops are in black.

No updates since today is a rest day, they're spending the night in Deming, NM. I looked at the tracker and see that they are staying across from the Deming Municipal Airport. Looking at it on the map, the airport sure seems big for a town of 14k people until I discovered it was an Army Air Field used for navigator training during WWII, pretty cool.

Some of these visited the state fair in Dallas last week. They were leaving around 5 o'clock and really did a number on traffic through downtown.

I was first in line at one of the intersections and was very tempted to turn my half door tank JKU in behind them and join up. It was a nice surprise to get to see them on the way home from work.

Ya, talking with them when they came through town the other day, I guess something similar happened before their arrival. Although they try to stay on back roads, they had to take the interstate for the last 30 miles coming into town. There is some construction going on and it was down to one lane each direction. They said there was a lot of pissed off people that had to follow them at 35 MPH for those 3-4 miles.

Personally, I can think of worse delays :thumb:
