Posted this in the Oscar Mike thread but couldnt get a response maybe here will work a little better.
How durable is the decal on the hood? Possible rust causing issues? What about fading of the paint all around the decal leaving a permanent fade mark years later if it starts to peel off?
The decal itself will last as well as you take care of it. It's thick, whatever it is (plastic? vinyl?) Someone who parks in a garage and waxes the decal with the rest of the car will have it last longer.
The paint underneath will definately not match if you remove the decal after several years.
The rust thing is me seeing water/dirt getting under the decal somehow. I didnt buy my oscar mike edition for the decals though and im considering taking them off now. I bought this jeep for the long haul and am not going to want to have a shadow of a star in 5 years because the vinyl came off. My only problem is as time has went on in the last couple months ive started to like the star decal just worried about long term problems.
I just hope that JEEP thought about this when they decided to use a sticker instead of an actual paint job on the hood.
I don't have the Oscar Mike decals but I have some stars I bought on line as well as some lettering for the hood I had made locally, they are probably just like the Oscar Mike decals in material.
I've had mine on for almost a year and a half under the harsh Arizona sun. They are tough and as mentioned before, no rust issues. I've taken my rig through thr brush and some pretty tough trails and even though they are scratched, they haven't started to some off.
Last year, I decided to change the lettering on the hood. The previous lettering had been on for almost a year and they peeled off easly. I did not see any "shadows" from the hood faiding around the lettering.

shadowing should really be the only issue a decal will leave once removed - I was looking around online and found this little snippet about shadowing removal from vehicles - I have no idea about removing, im more about applying decals so Id use anything abrasive as suggested in a less than obvious area to test first.
You should use a polish product containing diminishing abrasives to restore the faded surrounding paintwork until the the difference cannot be seen. A wax or sealant product should then finally be used to protect the paintwork that has been worked upon
What kind of lights are on your windshield? Those are sweet!
