The U.S. Army has a new ride to replace the Humvee. The military's latest vehicle will be the Light Combat All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV), built by Oshkosh Defense....
I see these things fairly regularly around the Aberdeen Proving Ground /Churchville test site. They seem really big and lumbering but are supposed to be able to do everything the Army asked. I wonder how they will fare in future combat.
Very true. Eventually we will be out of that mess in the Middle East and that behemoth will be overbuilt and overpriced for 99% of the basic utility roles it will be used for in peacetime, or in the next conflict, wherever that may be.
as the world becomes more urban im surprised the military isnt going for a smaller more city streetable truck. that thing looks like its the size of mack truck! good luck getting that into tight places.
I have driven them both and the MATV as they are called are incredibly hard to drive due to no visibility. Unless you drive this thing in the desert you will get it hung up on any obstacle in the way
Up until I transferred a few months ago, I worked out of a plant right next to the Warren, MI Oshkosh location. And the armory is just up the road. The whole area is where the Detroit Arsenal used to stand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Arsenal_(Warren,_Michigan) We used to see these trucks all the time doing road tests, and occasionally they'd come into our yard. They'd do a lot of starts and stops and circles nobody touching the steering wheels. It was pretty cool to watch, but our yard was really busy and congested with tractor-trailer traffic, so they were always in the way.
I am rather surprised they're NOT green certified. As in all battery operated. Operation Save Mother Earth as Our POTUS sayz its priority one to Our National Defense.
I can see it now, Advance E-teams parachuting into preplanned invasion routes to install solar E-stations and the like. Extend-the-range soldiers digging away burying battery (energy storage centers)
Should have replaced the HMMWV Hummer a long time ago. There wouldn't have been near as many casualties. The Gulf War was one of those, (should have anticipated) situations with the Hummers. This is an example of how long it take our government to react to a situation. I know this from a long experience.
Desert Storm isn't a good comparison. For the massive amounts of troops deployed, there were only 148 US soldiers killed in action, and another 145 more that were non-combat deaths.
The sad part is that SOF had up-armored HMMMVs for some time well before the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Congress and their pork-barrel spending had "better things" to spend their money on than equipment and safety.
I thought Maria made Arnie get rid of his fossil burning big boy toys?
