What ID numbers for my hood?

I currently have the star on my hood and now I want the numbers on each side of the hood. I have my grandpas serial number but it is eight digits, the ID digits on the hood are eight digits but it looks like I should have the first two be 20 signifying a Jeep. Grandpa was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during WW2.

Question is, what numbers should I use?

Thanks!

I wanted to use my grandpa's serial number if I could but I guess that doesnt really make sense for the vehicle ID. Would there have been any other numbers in or on the vehicle that I could use his numbers on?

Also, is that a golden eagle in your avatar? I love those!

It's all up to you but here are some ideas:
  • Early in the war (1941-early 1942) there was a "W-" prior to the numbers indicating it was from the "War Department". Later on, the "W" was dropped.
  • Certain Jeeps has a "-S" suffix indicating the vehicle electric system was "suppressed" for radio use.
  • Yes, WWII Jeep hood numbers started with "20" which stood for ‘reconnaissance’ followed by the vehicle's registration number.
  • Early Jeeps had 5 digits following the 20 and later Jeeps had 6.
  • The lettering was 3" tall and was preceded by "USA" either before or above the numbers depending on space available.
All that being said, on my Wrangler I have USA W-2009105-S with the last 5 digits being the last 5 of my VIN.

...put his service number in small size on the dash or on the side near the driver's door...

...many drivers put their names on the jeep...

...my driver had his on the driver's side of the cowl...

honor your grandfather! that is important!

This helps a lot. I would have something like USA 2016052868 (20 - His numbers). That just seems too long, maybe drop the 20 and go with USA W-16052868-S

I have 3 inch letters USA-W-200540-S (dads birthday) and that takes up the whole side of my hood. with maybe an inch or so of space in front and at the end. I'm not sure if USA W-16052868-S would fit in the 3 inch letters. Unless you're ok with it going on the cowl piece that's not part of the hood.

I'd say skip the 20 and just do his serial number. I got lucky using my Dad's # since it already started with 20.
