I may be able to get some renderings up in the next week. Look at springtails facebook page and you will see something new for the FJC that will be very similar.

If they continue the side rack....it will be much like the drawing.

The side rack is cool and uber-heavy duty but does not appeal to a wide audience. Its days may be numbered if I can't find some more uses for it.

Yes...very much like comparing a Lexus to a Yugo though

I just posted a thread yesterday on steel wheels, they would look great on your rig and are very J8ish.

You may also notice my front bumper which is modeled after the J8, although I didn't spend the extra $100 for D rings yet. From my research, the authentic J8 bumper would be the actual factory metal bumper from a euro spec JK, without the plastic cover. Mine is steel C-channel and very stout.
I love those white wheels! What was the cost?

As far as the bumper goes....my plan is to make both the channel and the HD shackles. I would like to incorporate some lights and a winch (so I am not totally going J8).

Ohh, a folding rack/table? I like it! BUT, and this is a big 'but', it better not rattle!

Unlike the ebay rattle traps made from flat plate and angle iron....some serious effort was put into a design that will not rattle, proper weight to application, proper articulation etc.

Cost varies depending on size. Mine are 15x8 and cost $68 each. 17's are over $200 each, hence why I went with 15's. Tires are cheaper for 15's too.

I incorporated a winch plate on my bumper also. Just need to get a winch now. If you can make the shackles go for it, but several companies already make bolt on shackle mounts that you can use.

What did you do about TPMS? I know nothing about it.

My Jeep is an early 2007 and it doesn't have a TPMS system. But you can just have the tire shop swap the sensors out of your wheels and put them in the new wheels.

I am very interested in this snorkel build. I think I would personally turn it towards the cab, though.

Here's another airbox view at the 1:18 mark of this video. There's lots of J8 videos on Utube.

....an Xtreme version of the J8, to say the least.

Those sideboxes behind the front fenders of the Jankel SOV might be a neat civilian Wrangler bolt-on, if engineered and aesthetically contoured properly for a regular JK fender. It would have to be weatherproof and lockable of course for tools, emergency items, and such. HMMM,....where's my sketch pad?!

Thanks for the pictures of the intake.

Obviously the diesel intake is much different that the gas model...I may have to make my own intake that will extend into the hood scoop above. That still is pretty low on my list....although, I did find a hood to use, checking it out on Monday.

I like the hood mounted tool rack....I may need to make one of those too! As long as I am screwing up a donor hood anyway

Seems to me that it needs some drainage holes though

The donor hood has arrived....$150.00. Pretty cheap me thinks, there seems to be an abundance of them too since it is quite popular to go to the AEV fancified hoods

Anybody out there have the actual dimensions of a J8 snorkel scoop? I will probably just have to guesstimate.

So, I was talking to my paint guys (shuddering at the price of what it will take to paint this thing)...they were telling me about a Matte Clear coat that may be a good option when I decide to dull the paint up a bit.

Update:

The new Side rack is cut, folded and powder coated....now all I have to do is assemble and install it. Maybe pictures tomorrow.

An early sneak peak at a possible folding variation for the rear door

I have been working on the J8 style hood scoop, I have the measurements down...so its just a matter of time.

Waiting to see one done! (J8 snorkel) I have been wondering if it would work better to build the entire snorkel/intake onto the breather box with a simple hole cut in the hood for it to fit through. Would eliminate the seperation/connection problem.

Are you building this snorkel as product development or just for personal use? While it may be very effective in the real world, it is rather hideous looking and I can't see too many people actually wanting to put one on their Jeep. Most snorkels are not very aesthetically pleasing. I'm still interested in following to see how this comes out though!

I would agree entirely with you. If you look at the air intake, it appears that it would be simple to fab some sort of duct upward that would extend through a hole in the hood. For that matter, you could probably just cut the hole in the hood and call it a cold air intake (probably not technically correct...but close enough).

What I do not know is how (or if I need to) prevent water from entering that area. That will require a consultation with my mechanic....for now I am just going to make the scoop and worry about the snorkel stuff later (call me a Poseur ) as my "to do" list thins a bit.

Its all an exercise in design, there are no guarantees that anything in this thread will actually make production. Personally, I see simplicity in design and function as a thing of beauty....I have been in love with the J8 since I first saw a picture of it. The snorkel/hood scoop is so simplistic it draws an air of coolness. That said....it will not be easy to make. I am rapidly finding out why no one is selling it.

I'll be back shortly....I am going to install my side rack now.

This really was an easy project...I should have done it years ago. It is a perfect fit for an MTM ammo can but is also heavy duty enough to fit a marine battery to help run my ARB fridge. The new cubby is about 4 inches deep and I sourced some nice luggage straps from Wally world for $1.99

Since I am not a vendor here...I can't comment on that, I can only show the process of the build (which is the fun part anyway ).

Since the bar goes all teh way to the back anyway, you should add some more MOLLE panels along that bar, perhaps mimicking where the faux diamond plate is on the stock panel.

I'd like to add something to the other side but the mounting points are limited without drilling. Another rack or a light duty basket maybe.

I will double check some measurements and start the process for a rear door folding table/rack next.

The hood project raised some hackles with my manufacturer....the hood curves are a bit complex for my equipment and they have scanners that can more accurately get the job done so I put them to the task of making the scoop.

You would think that it would be easy to make but sometimes it is the simple looking stuff that poses the most problems. There are two variations of the scoop that I have seen...a angular model on the AEV J8 and a slightly swoopier model on the "sarge" rig.

In order to get the shape I need....there will be a fair amount of welding/grinding involved which in general is labor intensive. The first one is always the hardest
