2014 JKUR build to J8 Military style

It is finally here....the new Rubicon in Dune.

I have a lot of plans for this rig....mostly to build it to have a lot of military style characteristics. As cool as an actual J8 is....I doubt that many of us could live with the buckboard leaf spring suspension. So I want the looks, pretty much the capabilities while retaining the comfort

Unlike most builds that are simply just parts acquired from other vendors. I will be designing most of the parts for this project. I have been tasked to refresh Springtails product line....so there will be some cool MOLLE products and panels going on in the cargo area, maybe a barrier a little down the line....and some other stuff too.
Since, no one seems to actively sell J8 Hood scoops. I am trying to source a hood to start working on a J8 style hood scoop/snorkel (no, I am not going to hack holes in my good Rubicon hood)...once acquired, that project should move pretty quickly. If anyone has info or pictures on how the intake embraces the hood....that will be helpful.
A J8 style front bumper will be in the works after I get done with the interior.
After I scratch up the paint a little....I am thinking about doing a matte Dune color for the entire rig.

You should throw up some pics of the J8 so we can see the look you are going for. Sounds like a neat project.

It should be a heavy duty rig when you are done

I definitely want to do a variation on the hood scoop and the bumpers.

The wheels, I am in a toss up about. I love steelies...particularly those on the green J8 on the bottom. But I think that they are off of a Dodge and require spacers to work....I would prefer to stay away from spacers if at all possible.

Whatever wheels I go with, they will likely be powder coated flat tan, something close to the Dune color.

Most of that will have to wait as I have a few projects to contend with for the cargo area.

Already started with the Springtail side rack...opening up the top so you could mount a battery or an ammo can

As compared to the "old" style"

I just want those wheels - I'm sure you can't buy those or anything similar aftermarket??

Springtail makes some really cool storage gear for FJ, JKs, LEO, Fire and Military applications. Since they are not a vendor on the forum (yet), it probably would not be allowed for me to post website details or prices.

You will just have to do a google search.

Most of their current products for the JK will be moot when I am done.

Springtail Solutions | Molle Pouches & bags | M-PAC Storage rack for Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeeps | Off Road Storage for Jeeps and Toyota SUVs

Will there be a new version of these for retail like in the CAD rendering, or is that just a one-off for this project?

Would be cool if the side rack worked with a Tuffy deck I will be interested to see your build.

Sweet. This will be a fun thread then. The product line seems like it should be interesting.

I've had the Springtail side rack and tailgate rack in my JKU for years. I really expected my 30lb tool bag to rip that tailgate rack off long ago, it's still holding strong!

It's too bad the side rack only fits one side/left side. If it was a pair, that I could add water can mounts to, right and left, I'd be more interested.

It is quite likely that many of the projects that occur on this rig will see the potential to be sold. My job will be to see potential areas that would be a good fit for MOLLE panels and/or other storage systems.

It has been made very clear to me that I can't just make stuff for me (which tends to be firearms related and/or too complex to manufacture readily).

Feel free to comment or voice suggestions....I love ideas.

Are you referring to this one...

Honestly, There is probably not much too offer that will work with the enclosure. The stuff I am thinking about will have more of an open accessible approach.

I can guarantee that I will have a new tailgate rendering soon. Something that will make you consider replacing the old MPAC rack.

Unfortunately, there are just not the body mounts to do much with the passenger side....how big are your water cans?

I hope so! Mine is getting traded in with the Jeep in 2 weeks when my 2014 JKUR arrives. I'll need that storage again.

Doc,

20L (5gl) each. I figured that it was a matter of mounting. Will there be a new mount, like in the CAD rendering or was that a one off?

I've been a huge fan of the J8 ever since I first heard about it. It's ashame you can no longer buy one for civilian use.

I just posted a thread yesterday on steel wheels, they would look great on your rig and are very J8ish.

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/cla...ls-367418.html

You may also notice my front bumper which is modeled after the J8, although I didn't spend the extra $100 for D rings yet. From my research, the authentic J8 bumper would be the actual factory metal bumper from a euro spec JK, without the plastic cover. Mine is steel C-channel and very stout.

The closest I have seen to the J8 wheel is the 17 Grand Cherokee steel wheel.

Welcome to Dune Country!! Seems like great minds think alike. I picked up a Dune JKU as well and love the J8 and military style jeeps. Partially why I jumped into a jeep to begin with and went with that color.

I've been hunting and researching J8 type parts for mine. If you come up with some cool stuff, I'd be interested.

I did order an MPAC for the rear door and I have a Tuffy decklid installed. Fit is perfect. I was thinking of adding a second MPAC to mount to the back panel of the Tuffy decklid. That way I would have two in the trunk area to store gear.

As far as the wheels, from what I've read, the J8 rims are basic steel wheels from a Dodge Ram truck which uses a heavier axle so the spacing is different for rims. Closet rim that would look is the oem off road steel rims. Those are apparently spare rims from a cherokee as well.

The J8 Sarge in the pics is running Dana 60s and a different bolt pattern.
