Alright guys so I'm about to start building a tire carrier for my jeep. I built a front and rear bumper (building another new rear one I better accommodate tire carrier) and here recently I have been looking around at different tire carrier ideas. I've narrowed down my search to the poison spyder Tj style drop down tire carrier. I have access to a pipe bender and fabricating equipment but I have one concern. I'm mounting the pivot mounts to the bumper to put most of the weight, well, on the bumper. And I planned on putting my pins to hold it up on the body. On the right hand side I figured it would be sturdy enough to just make a new hinge mount for the door and make it to where I can put a pin through it. But on the left side I would have to drill into the body in order to have a place to put my pin. I was wondering if I made a mount and put two holes through my body and then put a plate on the back side of the body would it be stout enough? Would I risk warping the tub or would sandwiching the body inbetween the pin mount and rear plate/gusset be enough? I'll post some pictures to better explain what I'm talking about. Thanks
I figure just making a mount for the carrier to be pinned too, drilling two holes then putting a plate and bolting them together to sorta sandwich the body will be stout. Just don't want to screw it up
Alright guys I went ahead and made the mounts that the tire carrier will be pinned too. The one on the left looks crooked from the picture but is straight. The bolt holes are mirrored of the ones on the right hand side door hinge. I did 3 bolts to duplicate the oem door hinge. The left hand side has a 1/4" back plate and is very very sturdy. Right hand side is bolted into factory holes. Going to start the actual tire carrier Monday! Stay tuned!!!
Got the third brake light in, everything is wired, bushings and correct size pins are made, going to get the holes punched out he bottom of the skid plate tomorrow, still have to cut out my trailer light hook up, and have a lot of clean up work to do. Coming together exactly how I wanted though.
