Welp I'm back at it. Never thought I'd be back I was wrong. Here is my old 03 Rubi.

Puny TJ (2003 Rubicon) - Jeep Wrangler Forum

Sold it a few years back after it absorbed all my negative equity.

So skip to a few months ago. The vehicle I was driving was out of warranty and losing value quickly. I had a specific type of Jeep I wanted at a price point that was firm. I had a few swings and misses but one night a 10a Rubicon popped up at my friends dealership. Long story short the next day I was signing papers.

The day I brought it home.

First thing first was to remove the spacers.

And one of my favorites.

First time with the top rolled.

Also added a cheap light bar after the great reviews from others on the forum.

Funny, once I got my jeep others at work started parking next to me.

So that weekend I had every intention of cutting the fenders. Was relaxing at home and saw a local add for Poison Spyder fenders already lined for 800, front and rear. Only crappy part was waiting for nut serts from Amazon.

Poser alert.

Next up was the head unit. Only thing this jeep lacked that u wanted was the screen. Little help from forum members it was upgraded.

Finally fenders fini.

Did a stick on angry unibrow. Still growing on me. Got a killer deal for JW Speaker fogs for $200

How my pup watches me when i run in for takeout.

Last but not least, I will finally be able to see at night. I cannot wait.

So I finally got my HID projectors in and man are they sweet.

Had to paint the Rings.

Nice build man. I saw Tom post the pic of those etched lenses on IG. they look sweet. I'll be installing my custom lights here soon as well. I did not pay any attention to the rings, but now I'll have a look and get paint if I need it. Thanks for the heads up!

Off to a great start, but I'm biased since it looks like my Jeep with red seats! Can't wait to see the lights on it.

Oddly enough I thought the red seats would be more rare than others. Turns out the black seats are more rare than red. I have been keeping up with your thread, you sound a lot like me. I told my wife the Jeep was good as is. Already almost 3K later I was wrong and she might take me out back and put me down.

i love that color. if i bought new i would have picked that.
Thank you sir. Oddly enough I think I saw my first Anvil early 2015. For whatever reason I wanted one bad. Kept seeing one at a dealership, or one down the road etc. When I went to look at this one I had no idea what color it was. My friend called me said they had a 13 Rubicon and I should come look, and it took all of 5 seconds for me to say I want it after I saw it.

Great build so far. Two questions:

1) what did you do to the stock head unit? I have the 430, but don't really understand what you changed?

2) I want to order some of those HIDProjectors. I've been following them for a while now. But with those designs, is it always on? How bright are they in comparison to the JWS?

I had the 130 (Radio Only) and hated it. Purchased this 430 out of a 2012 Caravan and plug and play. That and help from Ted @Rammer500 I was able to get it updated to the newest firmware.

2) I want to order some of those HIDProjectors. I've been following them for a while now. But with those designs, is it always on? How bright are they in comparison to the JWS?
You can wire them up however you see fit. I am going to attempt to have it setup as follows:

Halo: On when the Jeep is on.
Demon: On when unlock, on when Jeep is on, off when headlights are on.

As far as which is better that's up to you. Check this out:

I like being different. As much as possible. I am sure the JW Speakers for the money ($475) will be more than enough, but I wanted more.

From the receipts I have from the previous owner it is the 3.5" TF Springs with Fox shocks if memory serves me right. They skipped out on the control arms etc so I am slowly but surely correcting this mistake. According to stock vs my measurements the lift is around 4.5" from factory.

Tom was awesome to deal with. I am sure he got tired of me emailing him questions but he always answered. Ill be anxious to see what you had done. I went the cheap route (ha $900 later :censored: ) but I wanted to avoid this look:

So that's why I opted to paint the headlight bezels. Few pointers from what I learned the hard way.

1. Take the air box out. It helps with running the wires, and finding room for the harness, HID ballasts etc.

2. I ran the Halo + wires and the Demon + wires all together and did a fuse tap to an ACC in the fuse box.

3. There will be a white wire for the Demon lights that turn them off when it gets power. Tom preferred this be hooked up. So since you are only using the passenger side OEM socket, run the white wire from the passenger side to the driver side Demon White wire and splice both into the power of the driver side socket. That way when the headlights are on, the LED is off.

4. On the back of the headlights are little tabs (3 I believe). Take a dremel and carefully cut them off. You don't need them, and they will most likely be in the way.

5. He will send you install videos but right when you are ready to mount get them half assed into the headlight bezel and screw the 10 and 2 screw in, and make sure you adjust the headlights level then work your way around the light in an X pattern.

Good luck, I'm excited to see yours!

Thanks again for the info.

Do you have the fast back parts to the top, and if so, have you had a chance to play with the different configurations?

#27 ·
No problem. Always happy to try to help.

I only have the cargo top. I was looking into getting the fastback though. I will say this, a lot of people don't understand how this top works and that is the biggest problem for the company. Whether it's not taking the time to do a correct install video and showing how the different configurations work, or if they are just to "rare".

I hated the top when I first got it. .. because I didn't know how it worked. 3 weekends ago I wanted to paint the inside of the top black and removed all of it and finally saw how it went together and it was incredibly well thought out and built. I will try and get a few more pictures and maybe a video.

If it's a spontaneous decision to take just the header top off it can be done in 5 minutes. (front rolls forward, rear gets removed 100%) If I wanted the entire top off I can do that in 15.

I agree, they don't do a good job of showing off what the top does, or how it does it. Back when I was looking at them, I really had to focus my google-fu to figure them out.

One thing I never heard about was "rolling" the front of the top forward. Does it get rolled forward and stay on the Jeep rolled up there? I've not seen that in any of the pics. Have you had any heavy rains yet down there in Dallas to see if it sags or leaks any?

#29 ·
As it comes from the maker, the front rolls forward and gets wrapped up with a strap and a button and stays on the front of the Jeep. I am brainstorming to figure out a way to quickly remove the front piece like the rear. The problem is the bolts on the sides have to be tight enough to keep a seal to the front windshield.

We have had a ton of rain in Dallas. No one drop of water inside. Biggest problem people make is the drip rail in the middle of the Jeep isn't centered and then the top isn't centered. This is my daily driver, if the top wasn't snug, and dry I would be onto something else for sure.

Yeah, I'm a DD here as well. Being in CO, I'll keep my hardtop for the winters, but I'd love something that was quick and easy to open and close during the spring and summer. We have a perpetual 20%-30% chance of a Tstorm everyday during the summer, so taking the hardtop off full time is hard to do with a 44 mile round trip to work. lol

#32 ·
Someone I follow on IG just order a top from ORH, so I'll see what kind of service he gets. One of the thinks I really like besides being able to go from fastback to cargo back, is that their fastback allows you to open up the top all the way to the back. So many only open up the front part and/or have all those bows in the way if you can open it up.

I like your Wheels, I have the same ones in Black Satin, the Rugged Ridge XHD. You have Gunmetal, yes? What size, and tire? I am running 20" wheels with Pit Bull PBX A/T Hardcore 35"s

I love mine!

Glad you posted up that you decided to switch them. I've been going back and forth on that part. I could easily connect them to my sPOD, but don't know if I want to have to turn them on every time.

I've ran the harnesses for the main lights and the devil eyes, but I've not installed anything else. I'm trying to figure out where to put the two smaller boxes for my front and rear angle eyes (mine are setup to work as my turn signals). There is so little room behind the lights for all of this stuff. Any tips on where you ran your wires and stuck all the "black boxes"?

Are your Halos color changing? That's another area of wiring I have to figure out. They sent me two "octopus" wire harnesses, but I haven't really figured them out yet.

It was a pain trying to find space. It helped removing the air box to get more space. The driver side wasn't too bad. Did Tom not send the links to explain the harness?

Honestly I wouldn't waste the space on your Spod unless you have to have it. This was simple enough with a switch and relay. When I first got the lights I didn't want to mess with it, but the more I showed them off the more I wanted to choose.

Here is my passenger and driver side. Obviously real estate is at a premium on the passenger side because of the harness, is setup to be on that side.

Fun pictures

For what it's worth I plan on getting a spod but I will be keeping these separate. My Halos are just white. Once the tag was over $800 my wallet got really tight.

He did send me links and some install instructions... they are just not the best when you have all the options on your lights.

Thanks for the pics. My winch cables are ran in that same passenger's side areas as well, so that's not helping. I might have to reroute those to free up more space.

Right now I've only got one thing on my sPOD, so I have plenty of room and can easily move them off of there later if need be.

Love the Hillary sign!
