Mrs. Hooz's Urban Bugout Build

Mrs. Hooz has been driving Chevy Trailblazers since 2002 (2002 LS w/4.2L I6 and a 2006 LT w/5.3L V8) and was in the mood for something different. We've been fans of the 4-door JKUs since they came out, so last weekend we went "to look" at a few... We ended up driving home a 2007 Unlimited Sahara Edition last weekend for her to use as her daily driver. Now we're a two Jeep family!

Here it is, just after we got home...



About 15 minutes after that picture was taken, the top came down and it has stayed down most of the week!

Now, Mrs. Hooz is not one for stock vehicles. I lowered her '02 TB, put 20" wheels on it, put an exhaust on it, installed a CAI and had the PCM tuned. Her '06 TB was lifted and leveled with 31" tires, CAI intake and a PCM tune. I tell you this so you know that she takes her vehicles seriously. My kind of woman!

While Mrs. Hooz and I aren't what I would call "preppers", we do like to be prepared. We also enjoy the outdoors and have access to several hundred acres of property in Northern and Southern Ohio with plenty of logging roads and trails to explore. Plans for the JKU include a mild lift, 33" tires, CAI, exhaust, an SC programmer, bumpers and some recovery equipment... Basically we want it to be a weekend warrior/urban escape vehicle.

But first things first. I was informed that the factory AM/FM/CD player just would not do, especially with our North Carolina family vacation coming up in a couple weeks. Yesterday I ordered all the parts to rectify that situation. They should be trickling in over the next few days, so my next post in this "build" thread will deal with the first round of audio upgrades.

It's Steel Blue Metallic. In some situations it looks gray, in others blue and in some others it takes a greenish tint (like with all the reflected vegetation in the picture above).

I'll tell her about your invitation, but she's not much for the whole "online community" thing. I get paid to sit in front of computers all day, but she'd much rather be doing something (ANYTHING!) else.

I thought that might be what color it was. I LOVE that color in person.

No worries, if she's not interested. Just thought I'd ask, in case she figured she'd be hanging out with a bunch of MEN!

Ok. So, I lied! Not content to let the smoke clear from my wallet before spending more money on the Jeep (and not willing to pass up a great deal), I just bought a Superchips Flashpaq tuner from a fellow Jeeper in the WF classifieds section.

I should have it early next week, and I'm really looking forward to tweaking the JKU a bit.

Now I'm REALLY done for this month, I swear!

So I spent yesterday evening upgrading the head unit in Mrs. Hooz's JKU. I plan on replacing the amp and factory speakers at some point, but she was jonesing for some iPod and SiriusXM lovin' in her new toy, so that was the #1 priority.

New head unit - Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS



It's a touchscreen DVD unit with HD Radio tuner, SiriusXM support (add-on tuner), Bluetooth, iPod controls, Navigation (add-on), backup camera (add-on), etc, etc.

So I spent some time bench-wiring the PAC harness and the Pioneer harness... Shortened the wires, soldered, heat-shrinked and tried to clean it up as much as I could.



Then I plugged everything in on the bench to make sure I knew where it would go. There's not much room in the dash, so I wanted to be sure I could "plug-by-feel" if I needed to.



Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures during the install itself. Like everyone else, I cut out the metal support bracket and had a helluva time cramming everything in there. But at least it powered-up and worked on the first try!



I still have to wire the SiriusXM antenna from the top of the rollbar/soundbar to the tuner behind the glovebox, I have to finish cleaning-up the USB/AUX port and wiring that I put in the glovebox and I have to decide on a final mounting spot for the Bluetooth microphone, but at least we have tunes and iPod support for the time being!

I also received the Superchips tuner last night, so a reflash will be coming along shortly as well.

Such a good husband!

Mike has the previous model of that head unit. He STILL can't get the App Radio feature to work. Did you try it? If you haven't and decide to, would you let me know what you think of it, please?

I went the opposite route and got new speakers first, but I'll be in the market for a head unit soon, and hopefully find one that WILL work with App Radio or Siri Eyes Free.

I haven't tried it yet, but I will. We've got 2 different Droids and an iPhone 5 to tinker with, but there is a firmware update from Pioneer I have to install first.

Once I give it a run, I'll let you know.

I'm really liking the wife's new JKU. A lot. So much so that I am contemplating selling my Nissan Titan and my YJ and getting another JK or JKU for myself to drive. The one sticking point is that I need a tow vehicle for my boat. So, on Saturday I decided to do a test tow of my boat behind Mrs. Hooz's JKU.



It squatted a bit in the back, but not too bad. The "dry" package weight of the boat and trailer is about 2500#, so it didn't sit too bad all things considered. I should've used my other drop hitch to get the ball down a bit more but that setup worked well enough for the test.

I didn't bother loading up the Flashpaq's tow tune. I just ran it with the 87 octane tune that I had already loaded. It didn't have any issues on the 28 mile round-trip. I even took the long way so I could tow it up and down some hills to see how it would do. With the "max tow" package and 4.10 gears, I didn't have any problems at all. I'm assuming the tow tune would be even better.

Some observations... If I decide to use the Jeep as the main tow vehicle I will be upgrading the brakes a bit (slotted rotors, better pads and stainless lines), looking into some heavier duty springs and adding the Mopar trans cooler and a trans temp gauge for a little more peace-of-mind. I can switch to the Flashpaq's tow tune in a matter of minutes, so that would also be a given.

While it is definitely not my 5.6L Titan w/tow package (rated to tow 10,000#) I think the JKU would handle tow duty without any issue. And that opens up a whole new discussion about MY daily driver!

I got some more stuff for the JKU over the last few weeks. Since it's my wife's DD, I didn't want to get too crazy with it.

I put five new BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain T/As on it. I went with 265/70-18 which are 32.6" - one size up from stock. While I was doing tires I also added a set of MOPAR wheel locks and had an alignment done.

I got the "Death Wobble Fix" bolt kit for the frontend. I figured it was cheap insurance for the $60-ish that it cost.

I got a set of 1.5" Spidertrax wheel spacers.

I got a set of 3/4" Daystar front/rear spring spacers.

I have a line on a semi-local set of 18/60 take-off springs , but my basement flooded last week, so I haven't had the time or funds available to go get them.

I'm still trying to decide on a set of shocks to go with everything else. Once I do get something, I'll put all the shocks/spacers/springs/etc. on and see how it all looks.

Sounds like you've got a nice set of mods ready to go!

Make sure you check out the Rancho 9000xl shocks. They are really nice. You might really enjoy the adjustability, changing it up when you tow and making it softer when you aren't. We LOVE ours.

I broke down and ordered the Rancho 9000XL shocks for the JKU (26/28). And since I'm OCD, I also got the Rancho stabilizer (5407) and bracket (5510). Originally I didn't think I needed the adjustable shocks, but I decided they would probably be helpful if I planned to tow anything, and the reviews on the 9000XLs are all pretty positive, so...

I put the Spidertrax spacers on already, but I was waiting to tear in to the suspension until I had everything on hand. I'll post pics once everything is here and ready to rumble!

It's been a while since I posted anything here, but I've been rolling along with the "Urban Bugout" build. I changed a few things along the way, but I've been taking pictures and measurements so, as I get some time I will organize them and document my progress here.

Notable changes:

I decided against the 3/4" Daystar front and rear spacers. I wanted just a touch of lift, but I also wanted to level it out a bit, so I got Teraflex spacers (1" front and 1/2" rear) instead. Anyone need a set of Daystar 3/4" spacers BNIB?

I'm sticking with the 17/58 stock springs for the time being. I'll see how it rides for a while with the RS9000XLs and Teraflex spacers before I make a final decision on the springs.

I just got (as in, just ordered it today) an MBRP stainless catback system for the Jeep. I got the high tuck, "offroad" one after doing a bunch of reading and listening to sound clips. It won't be here until next week, but I'm giddy about it! No more minivan exhaust tone!

Since all build posts are worthless without pictures, here are the Teraflex spacers as delivered:

According to UPS, my MBRP exhaust will be here tomorrow. While I was waiting, I ordered an aFe Momentum GT intake with a Pro DRY S filter.



I like this one for two reasons. One, the openings in the intake box are high enough that water crossing ability will be pretty much the same as stock. And, two, it uses a washable dry filter. No oiling!

And it's got a cool tire tread design that will look right at home under the hood of a Jeep!

I finished up the exhaust and took it for its maiden voyage. I like the sound of it. It's got a nice rumble without being obnoxious. Hovering in the 2500rpm range sounds perfect. We'll see how Mrs. Hooz likes it this evening when she gets home from shopping with her sister.





The fit and finish was perfect. Everything slipped right together and lined-up perfectly. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the old exhaust off.

Well... Mrs. Hooz has been tooling around in the newly exhausted Jeep today. Her impression is that the new exhaust may be a little too loud for her. I think it has a perfect growl without being obnoxious, but, it is her Jeep after all.

She has promised to give it a week before issuing her final verdict.

More goodies arrived today! I'm at work, so I didn't want to break everything out of the box for pictures, but I'll snap some when I get it put on!



As a side note: Mrs. Hooz is still not liking the exhaust. She told me I should buy another JKU for me, put the exhaust on it and then buy a different exhaust for her. I like the way she thinks!

Newest update... Rancho RS9000XLs! Here is how it started the day.



The front height was right at 35.25" to the fender (measured from a level floor through the center of the wheels). The back was 36.25" to the fender.

Factory front shocks:



I put on the 9000XLs and some 1" TeraFlex spacers with the factory (17) springs.



And here is how she sat with the front done and the factory (57) springs in the back.



The front was sitting right at 37" to the fender, the back was at 36.5" Then I changed the rear shocks and threw on a stiffer set of factory springs (59). I did NOT put the TeraFlex .5" spacers in the back because I wanted to see how it sat with the new springs first.



Sorry for the crappy picture, but I was running out of daylight. Here's how it ended up for today.



The front is at 37" and the back is at 37.25", so it has just a bit of rake. We'll see how it settles and maybe then I'll add the TF spacers in the back. This Jeep sees some tow duty, so I like a little bit of rake to make up for the sag when towing.

I set the front shocks on 5 and the rears on 4 and took it for a spin. Holy crap! It rides SO much better than it did!

Thanks for the pics and write up. I will be going from 14/55 to 18/59 springs and a 3/4" front terra spacer. I just installed 17x9 wheels and 295/70/17 Nitto Grapplers no rubbing or issues at all but I am adding the springs and spacer as said above. From your experience and reading your thread I do not think I will have to change or add any other suspension parts, Correct? My vehicle will not be a hard core off road vehicle mainly street with some trail riding. Thanks.

You shouldn't need anything else. Even though those springs are going to give you some lift, they are still "factory" springs, so they should work within the factory specs for all the other suspension components.

Remember to loosen/bounce/shake/retorque all of your control arm and swaybar bolts (with the tires on the ground) after you get the springs and spacers put on!
