spieg's build thread

Ordered back in January with the following options:

2013 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Billet Silver Metallic
Cloth Seats
Heated Seats
Auto Temp
Max Tow
Dual Top
Connectivity
4.10
Remote Start
Slush Mats

Took almost exact a month to build and ship. Started off a little rough. The hood was damaged in shipping and the dealer had it shipped off for body work before I ever got a chance to even see it. A few days later I finally got to take a look at it. The hood had a lot of work on the bottom side from them pounding out the dent in the hood. The paint job looked good, but I wasnt comfortable with the hood damage. Long story short, (Click here for the longer story) I ended up with an AEV hood. I'd been planning on adding a 10th anniversary hood but the dealer couldnt order a 10a hood at the time. Fortunately, the AEV hood was one of the first with the dual nozzles. Around mid february I finally had my jeep and put the shipping damage behind me.

Im working with a local shop to handle a lot of the heavy lifting with my build. I dont really have the time or expertise for some of the bigger mods, so im going to let someone a lot more qualified than myself do it. When it comes to steering changes and that sort of thing, id rather not risk it. Along the way ill handle adding in the easy stuff, cosmetic stuff, etc.

As of now the plan is:

Phase 1: Front half
Phase 2: Rear half
  • Chrome-moly axle shafts
  • Heavy duty diff cover
  • Metalcloak upper and lower control arms
  • Replace AEV track bar and tower if necessary
  • Replace rear drive shaft if necessary
Phase 3: Way down the road...
  • RCV front shafts
  • 4.88 gears
  • Flat fenders
  • 37" tires
Cosmetic and comfort items:
Bumpers, armor, and recovery:
Miscellaneous:
  • Factory locker override
  • ESP override
  • Headlights...to be determined
  • Snorkel...to be determined
  • Breather extensions

Installed the trek armor seat covers. I may at a later date pull the seats out and see if I can tighten the fit up a little bit. Overall its a really good fit, just hard to pull the sides tight next to the console. If I decide to line-x the tub, ill probably just tweak the seat covers at that point.

Also installed the synergy grab handles. Definitely not as quick and easy of an install as it could be, but ends up looking great. The instructions are pretty much useless. I opted to drill holes instead of make notches. I had to trim the top of the a pillar trim piece to allow the J hook to fit over the roll bar, file down some weld that was right in the way of the J hook, and trim the roll bar padding. I ended up adding a grommet (OMAR2872 from cableorganizer.com) to make the install a little cleaner on the a pillar trim piece.

Phase 1 scheduled for 3/7 and 3/8! As long as my PR44 shows up on time, next weekend should be fun!

Sounds like a good plan. I saw you split the PR44 and the gears and rcvs into seperate phases. Might be able to save some cash doing those both at the same time. You can have your PR44 shipped to you with gears, lockers, and rcvs already installed. But if you are running those 35s for a while you'll be fine on your Rubi 44 in the mean time.

Thanks jagerhelix! I definitely could've saved a few hundred doing the gears and RCV's now. But it would've cost quite a bit more to add that stuff now. I know ill essentially be wasting that money later if/when I jump to 37's, but it keeps my budget a little lower for now. As you mentioned, I figured on small 35's id probably be fine for now on the 4.10's anyway. I do a lot of highway driving so the 4.88's with the duratracs probably wouldn't have been the best fit. So far its been a struggle between planning for the future and being realistic for the time being.

I definitely appreciate the feedback. First time wrangler owner hoping to get most of it right the first time through.

Gotcha, well it looks like a well thought out plan. You might just want to skip those 35s lol you are setting yourself up with the right amount of lift for 37s. I regretted my 35s for 6 months beforeI went 37s. Should have just done it the first time. Can't wait to see your progress!

I'm definitely breaking out the popcorn for this build.

Looking forward to it. Looks like an awesome plan.

I love the idea of the grommet with your grab handles. That's my kind of mod right there. Very clean.

Probably best for all of us. I think my keyboard may short out due to the drool.

I'm curious, Spieg, what led you to choose the AEV springs?

This is definitely a nice shop! Im glad I decided to bring my jeep here. These guys know their stuff and do a ton of builds. Next to the pallet of PR44's was a pallet of built dana60's. There are dozens of built jeeps out in the parking lot. Its pretty awesome. I definitely feel like my jeep is in good hands. And these guys have been fantastic about answering questions along the way and helping with my build. Cant say enough good things about them.

As for the AEV springs, I guess it was mostly based on hear say. Ill still be daily driving my jeep Monday-Friday every week and I need a setup I can live with for commuting. I wanted a comfortable ride. A lot of people like the AEV/bilstein combination and the shop im working with said the ride quality was really good in that setup as well, so I went that route.

Tires on the ground for the first time in a couple days. Didnt last long, right back up in the air to have the steering stabilizer put on. Still needs a final alignment. Getting close!

Got my front bumper removed and the LOD mid-width on. The upper/outer frame horn bolts on that bumper install are a nightmare. I got so frustrated during the install that I kicked the door coming into the house and broke one of my toes.

I also ended up relocating the vacuum pump with the OR-Fab kit. I just felt better about getting it up and away from the bumper/winch/etc.

Im building up quite a pile of parts. If anyone is around michigan and needs a grade 8 bolt kit, an LOD vacuum pump relocation bracket, or any stock parts off a 2013 rubicon, let me know!

Dude! Sorry about your toe. The bumper looks great, though. I think LOD makes one of the best looking mid-widths.

I had ordered the grade 8 kit ahead of time and most of the synergy brackets/components came with hardware.

I would but they painted over the bolts so I can't take it off.
