479jeep's build thread

I decided to post some of the work I'm currently doing on my jeep. The way I'm going to do this is by making the part or buying the part which ever is cheaper. The first item I did was a front diff cover. I ended up buying a blue torch fab ( btf) do it your self kit . The kit came in four pieces and fit together good I just have the pics of the finished cover . The next item I'm working on is a skid plate for the trany and eng . I decided to build this from some 3/16 steel and some scrap steel. So far I have the skid plate bent and mocked up underneath the jeep. And I have some mounts tacked together.

Update I dont know if anyone is interested in the price of parts but here we go for the diff cover it was around $62 ,for the skid plate I bought a 15" by 36" piece if 3/16 sheet metal for $35 for the brackets Im just using some scrap metal I had laying around. Hopefully I can finish welding the brackets today and drill the holes for the skid plate.

Alright I have the brackets ground and painted as well as the skid plate . For the skid plate color I decided on doing a different color other than black. So I decided on some kubota orange. If I don't like it the color I can paint it Black later. So after the paint dries I'll install it and flex the jeep to make sure the left bracket doesn't contact the drive shaft.

I got the broken tap out last night. So what i have left is to finish tapping the hole, drill the bearing cap, install new axle seals, install the compressor and reassemble everthing. Hopefully I will have time monday to finish up this little project.

I fixed the cb took the jeep out for a 40 mile trail run and everything worked as advertised . The only issue I have now is were I put the arb switches. Some times when I put it in park I accidentally hit the locker switch. I might relocate it or just be carefully.

I ordered that diff cover too to try and learn to weld. How was it? Did everything line up ok? And did you spray it or are you getting it powdered?

It lined up very well. The first one I did was for my front dana 44. It has a seep from one of the welds . So on this one after I welded and I sealed the inside. I just sprayed the outside with paint I'll post some pics tommorow if I have time.

Just got back from vacation now it's time to finish up the front bumper. I cut off the number ends and capped it with a piece of 3/16 steel. While I was at it I welded some d-rings on . Now I'm in the process of installing my new winch.
