I have a 2003 tj and I want to lift it but im not sure where to start. I was thinking only like a 2in lift. I only have around $500 and im not even sure what type of lift I can get with that. And what is the difference between all the different type of lifts anyway? I plan on putting larger tires on it but I figure the lift has to come first. Also how would I go about installing one, do I take it to a shop or do it myself? Sorry for being such a noob
I'm a Jeep newb too but when you starting modifying any vehicle you always have to figure out what your goal/use for the vehicle is. Are you mostly just road driving? Rock Crawling? Trail riding?
If you just want bigger tires you can get a body lift cheaply enough and clear some bigger tires.
$500 is a pretty low budget but its a start. Now you could get the Zone combo 4.25" lift. Its a 3" suspension lift, 1.25" body lift, and a 1" motor mount lift with your choice of hydro or nitrogen shocks and it comes with new coil springs. This kit keeps you from having to install a SYE and other after market parts. It is a pretty good lift for the price. You will need to install 33" tires to make the Jeep look symmetrical which is where the price starts going up fast.
I put this lift on my 2001 TJ and cant be happier with the service and parts I got. If you want to see what it looks like ck my build page. http://www.wranglerforum.com/f322/project-ole-yeller-771226.html
Whatever you do it will be you driving it so make sure your gone be happy with what you decide. Sometimes its best to wait until you can afford what you want rather than settling for what you can get right now.
Later on I will most likely change over to metalcloak dual action springs and some type of high performance shocks. For now though my rigs exactly what I need to gain experience in before I really start tweaking it, LOL. Check with the forum vendors for parts and they will give you great prices, GOOD LUCK
Look into a BDS 2" Coil lift. Comes with new coils and shocks. I installed this on my Jeep not too long ago. Looks great, provides enough lift to fit 33" tires. BDS also has a nice warranty - and as far as I can tell - no one on this forum that I've researched really had anything bad to say about it.
As for installing - I had a shop do mine. People do, and can, do it themselves and save a bit of money. However I would recommend not doing it yourself if you don't have the jack stands, air tools, or spring compression tools already or readily available. Also if you're not too car savvy, its always reassuring to have something professionally done for a couple hundred bucks more.
Thanks for all the help guys! I'll probably post some pictures when I decided what I want to do and start installing it.
