My TJ Build Up

I thought it would be fun to have build up thread for my first Jeep ! I think it would be cool to see what it starts like and how it eventually ends up. I will update as I go with photos and what has been done. It is a build up that I am doing what I can and then having a local Jeep specialty shop do some stuff also. At the moment I have to take a chill pill as I have spent way more than I thought I would...basically depleating my savings . Picked up the Jeep for $4500 and have about $4660 in parts/labor with what I have ordered so far. Enjoy!

Basic specs:

'97 Wrangler TJ
4.0L Straight 6
114k miles
5 speed
Dana 35 rear axle
Dana 30 front axle

Plans:

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 33"x12.5" Mud Terrain tires (ordered)
Pro Comp 15x8" Type 51 wheels (ordered)
BDS 3" Suspension lift (ordered)
Advanced Adaptors Slip Yoke Eliminator Kit (ordered)
Tom Woods rear driveshaft (ordered)
Kilby Steering box skid (ordered)
Quadratec floor mats (installed)
Banks Monster Cat-back Exhaust
Aftermarket front bumper
Warn M8000 (ordered)
Rock sliders
Windshield mounted lights
Gas tank skid
High Lift jack
Fire Extinguisher (installed)

Here it is a few days after I bought it.

So far I have replaced the fluid in the front and rear axles and transmission, changed the oil and oil filter, air fliter, spark plugs, added front rubber floor mats, and installed a Garmin navigation system. I also removed the side steps because I like the look without them.

I am awaiting my tires/wheels/lift kit to arrive and be installed. If I get really into it I will probably end up getting either a Dana 44 or Ford 8.8 swapped into the rear.

4/12/2009 - Found a new Warn M8000 on Craigslist for a couple hundred cheaper than buying online. It is brand new, never been used.

4/14/2009 - Picked up my tires/wheels from the carrier tonight. Look sweet! I wish they were mounted with the white lettering on the inside, but they are already balanced so I will deal with it for now. Second photo is next to my mothers Ford Escape.

Also, today I received my Mile Marker winch plate, Warn cover, ARB tree strap, ARB clevis', and ARB snatch block. I also picked up a set of tow hooks to use until I get a new bumper with D-ring attachment points. I am awaiting my ARB Snatch strap that is on backorder. Jeep is going in next Wednesday for the lift kit, SYE, and driveshaft install.

Let me know when you get them rims and tires on so I can see what they look like. I just bought a Green 97 sport just like that and im not sure if I want black wheels or Rubicon rims.

Will do. I had ordered the Soft 8's but they were backordered so I got these for the same price.

I'd push the plans for upgrading that rear axle up ASAP especially if you plan on wheeling it. Keep us updated on the progress.

Just got back from Costco with my Optima Yellow top battery. Plan on fitting the winch and battery right now. Photos once it is done!

Finished installing the battery/winch/winch plate/tow hooks. Not to bad. I notice that my cable isn't touching the lower fairlead roller. When looking at it dead on, if I was to pull something out that would cause the line to "roll" against my lower roller it would actually rub against the winch plate instead. The fairlead needs to go up a bit. Other than that photos in a bit

LOL, here you go!

4/15/2009 - I picked up an Optima Yellowtop battery from Costco today. I was able to install the winch and battery with little trouble. The fairlead needs to be raised as the winch cable is touching the winch plate. Also tossed in a photo of the new tire/wheel combo next to the Jeep. Looks like it will be a great combo!

Nice. Thanks for that photo.

4/21/2009 - Finally a bit of an update. I just dropped off the Jeep at the shop. I should have it back on Thursday. Upon arriving home I found some new parts I had ordered.

I got the Kilby Steering Box skid, Mirror movers, KC Windshild light mounts, KC Slimlite Long Range Off Road lights, ARB tree strap, and fender reconditioner stuff. Hopefully I can put this all on this weekend.

Will have some new photos when I get the TJ back from the shop.

Nice upgrades, have a question, what section did you find your winch in on craigslist?

I don't recall. I actually just put Warn in the main search box and it was one of the items to come up. I never checked out the section it was in.

A question for you guys now:

Is it worth $80 for a spare set of used front Dana 30 axle shaft assemblies, both left and right sides? They are supposedly in good shape.

James,

Let me know how those relocator brackets work for you.. I just purchased Warrior Products deluxe tube doors with overpriced mesh and I heard that the relocator brackets render the passenger mirror useless..

Will do Timber. I am assuming how they are set much father forward than when they are on the doors that they won't be very useful, if at all. I think the driver side mirror will still be OK. I basically got these because I prefer the factory mirrors and just need them to stay legal when the doors come off.
