It went well!! I got the sponsorship and will start building hopefully within the next few days!!! I need to get this and the 4000 word paper done before like august 10 so I need to get started! Lol, hopefully I'll have t done within the next 2 or 3 weeks and I will post SOME pictures as it comes along! I just need to be over protective about the idea because of anyone got a hold of the idea and put it out as their own then I would have my paper thrown out... Anyways, thanks for the support and ideas on funding! I will keep y'all updated as they come

Find a cheap source

You can find a cheap source for your metals. Try Metal Salvage yards, recycling centers and industrial fabrication shops. You may be able to buy it at scrap prices.

I bought a 10 ft. piece of 7"x4.5" 6061 T6 Aluminum from a metal salvage yard for $84.00.. I cut off a 4 ft. section, drilled the mounting holes to match to the frame mounts and a winch. Presto! Stage one complete. Stage two is to add a winch guard and some accessories, like cup and rod holders, steering box guard. etc.

Good luck with your project.

I actually really like that bumper! it looks good and actually may end up making something out of something similar, after i build this bumper. i was able a sponsorship from a local steel supplier, not sure if i should disclose the name without the permission, but regardless i am very happy with this and cannot wait to start on it! as i said i am going post pictures as i can as long as it doesn't show anything too much to the point where it could possibly put my essay in jeopardy. anyways, look forward to sharing and hope y'all enjoy!

also:
this is a random question, but how are you going to make the cup holders? my jeep didn't come with on the inside, at least to the point where they don't do anything, and really don't want to pay $50 for a little piece of plastic on ebay... any ideas would be great!

A cheap patent from a garage lawyer will cost $10K+. I know people that are well over $100K into one patent. Unless you are willing to spend $200K to defend your patent, don't bother filing it. It will also disclose exactly how to build your product so they can copy it easier. Proper support for a stinger to function correctly will probably require a engine cage to tie into.

the patent probably won't go through, as the costs and the time it would take, which would be unnecessary for me. but i have a way to support the weight of the car, essentially, to allow the stinger to function properly. I have been working with engineers and steel manufacturers on an exact design to support this kind of weight and they agreed with my design. building within the next couple of weeks.

I haven't gone into the think stink for the upholders yet. The initial brain fart was to drill or cut holes in the horizontal of the bumper and braze or bolt an aluminum strap underneath it. I'll make the cup holders large enough to accommodate a 16 oz. beer inside a Koozie. Just a good novelty.

Good luck with your endeavor.

i think just getting a hole drill and drilling out a hole big enough and putting an aluminum strip under would be your best bet, sounds like a good idea to me! i'll actually probably end up doing that! lol, but i just needed a way to make my cup holders actually hold cups up and not just let them spill! thanks anyways though!

ID:	1310450Got the base of the bumper started. It's going to be cut back on the sides and given a little bit of an angle to it to look better and be farther away from the tires. Just made out of 3/16th inch think plate steel, bent at a 90 degree angle on the top and a 45 degree angle on the bottom to act as a steering box cover. The support bar will come next so the stinger will be sturdy enough to function.

I'm aware it looks a little funky as is but going to work on it to make it look better.

Oh and the bumper isn't mounted yet, just put over the stock bumper. Going to take the bumper off to start tacking on mounts and getting it ready for mounting within the hour

a few hours later, i got the bumper cut to clear the sway bar links mount, got the plates for the mounting of the bumper cut and the correct holes pressed. this coming tuesday i will be welding the small plate to the frame rails, as depicted, with bolts welded on the back. then will mount the plates on the back of the bumper so i can bolt them to the plate welded to the frame rails. also will be adding supporting struts off the plate welded to the bumper to prevent if from "rolling" under the stress it will be exposed to.
last picture shows how the mount on the bumper will connect to the one on the frame rails

At the steel mill now to hopefully mount the bumper today! May end up changing the style but not sure yet. Need to make sure I have enough room to mount the stinger and plenty of strength.

Made some progress. Put these on and cut down the edges! I'm loving the way it looks so far! Also I welded the brackets on so it's fully mounted now. Will start working on the support bar soon! Not 100% sure on the style of it get because there are a couple of different ways I may go but we'll just have to see! Lol

Also will be implementing lights into it. Thinking of putting a 15 inch light bar right in the middle and then 2 small 3x2 inch LEDS in the little fins and just below.

Just a small pic of the finished base of the bumper! Will have the test of the pictures tomorrow morning as I have to finish welding and grinding to make it look better. It's a different design but I like it a lot. This is a side view by the way.

Working on it a little more today, mainly just cleaning it up and put these flat bar in a diamond configuration to block the sight of the ugly sway bar. Planning on putting some LEDs behind it to shine though it. That won't be until later, after I get the bumper finished.

Will post more pictures when I get home because this is the only one it'll let me post from my phone. Much more to come

I think there will be just enough room to mouny one. Yes, it will be close but I think it'll make it! Haha, I use my winch a lot so I am no doubt going to make it fit.

Just got everything smoothed out and cleaned up. Once it's painted it won't even look welded

Wouldn't that sacrifice rock crawling height? It looks like it's definitely blocking the sway bar, but might bump into a rock or two.

Something like the effect of Milk Jugs.

to be honest, i am not 100% sure of that right now... this bumper is really just theoretical and just needs to work in the exact cases i throw at it, like hitting an incline dead on. This is not realistic but it is the easiest way to test it for the project. anyways, i like the look, its different, and i feel that if i were to encounter the problem of a rock hitting before the tires then i would hope the angles i put on the bumper would allow it to slide over it.
i really don't even do too much rock crawling... nothing really too close in my area and don't have much time. i just enjoy building for my jeep and doing smaller trail rides.

thanks for the input though!

also, had an accident today at the steel mill... a 10 ton overhead winch was overloaded when someone was trying to move to the trailer to get loaded and the whole 20 ton load and winch fell from the ceiling!! probably 21 tons falling from the ceiling... nearly killed the crane operator and the table laying down in the second picture was flipped and thrown into their air when the metal fell and hit it! i about shit my pants when i heard it, along with everyone there! haha, luckily, no one was harmed...

besides the winch, it was gone.... RIP winch lol

20 tons on a 10 ton winch? How does someone do that?? Good to hear that no one was harmed but, boy, that can do some serious harm....

some one being a dumbass and trying to do their job quickly after getting behind, risking his and others lives... makes me a little angry that someone would do that!! but no one was hurt and that is what matters. going back tuesday to see if the concrete was broken from it (; haha

I spent 24 years in industrial construction. Many times using overhead cranes and not once in all those years and plants di I see, hear about or even catch a rumor of that happening. You watch your ass in there. Sounds to me like just anyone can go run their heavy equipment and that's a great way to maim or kill someone. Anyone familiar with the equipment would have known better than to overload it. Also that crane must be pretty old. The newer ones of the past 10-15 years have auto shut downs for situations like that.
Bumper is coming along nicely, keep up the good work but be sure to keep an eye on your surroundings in that plant.

Everyone that was there said that is the first time anyone have ever seen anything even similar to that! Many of them have done nothing but iron work their entire lives and never had this happen! I was there for 2 weeks and saw it! Haha, but I would assume it is a little older. The company is well established and is definitely a little older but their equipment is still no doubt top of the line and they're very efficient there. I think it was just one dumbass trying to get caught up and decided this would be a good way to catch up... Anyways, I am VERY weary of my surroundings especially after that accident.

Thank you very much for the advice and support on the bumper! Will be working on it more tomorrow making the stinger
