Bought my fourth jeep, second TJ over a month back. Still gathering all the pieces and parts to help make most of the build smooth. Plans are simple,
5.3, 4L60E, 231J rear case with S-10 front sye, 2 inch coils, 1 inch body lift, custom mounts. 8 double adjustable control arms (made by me) TJ-6ing this thang.. 15" frame and body extenstions. Custom Roll Cage and bumpers built by me. Dana 44's and 35's with 4.56 gears and zip lockers. Want to stay LCG and maybe short arm with Metalcloak fenders. Cruise, A/C, on board air. It's been fun so far, surgery will start very soon. I'm currently rebuilding the LS in my parent's basement, ordered comp cams parts this week. All the other stuff for the engine as well. Can't wait to snap some pics of the paint job :beerdrinking: Dual purpose rig, I want to be able to drive it there, wheel it, and drive it back. Tow rigs are meh.. Making a custom trailer out of the Z71 bed. Anyways.. enjoy!
The night I picked the poop up.
Pulled 2.5L and poop trans
Waggy 44 front and Rodeo Rear
New to me frame with a lot less rust than a MA native one
Found a good 01' Z71 donor truck, complete truck 5.3L 174K miles
So after working more on the engine at my parent's house, I'm back home chilling. Got to looking around a bit, picking out a color scheme for the TURD when he's ready to paint. I know I might get flamed for this, but I don't care. I've always been an avid PC gamer and built custom rigs for years for myself and others. One character in a game that always stood out to me was a Turian named Garrus Vakarian. So after thinking at first I wanted to paint the Jeep Viper steel Grey, I thought I'd add some blue accents and Call the TURD when he's painted... "Archangel". Anyways, here's a reference pic of the color templates I'll be choosing from. This is from the game Mass Effect 3. Always wanted to merge my two hobbies. This will be jeep to do it with. Maybe even have some N7 armor.. LOL.
Here's a closer idea to the paint scheme I'll be trying to accomplish. Just substitute viper steel grey for the satin black on this JKU. But I do like the wheels, gives me some ideas on the one's I've picked out.
Woops, messed up that one..Not much to show, finishing up final touches on the LS engine before I snap some poser pics . Other than that I got my frame repair pieces today. May be a few weeks before I can start working on the frame I purchased. I have a lot of side work that needs to be finished to fund this TURD... And I've decided to go 37" KM2's and started buying my tires through work. Picked out my wheels too
Been real busy at work and with side jobs lately. No work much on the TURD. But I did get the project frame cut and all the prep for the safetycaps done. It's currently at the sandblasting place getting blasted and primed. Next will be frame extensions and safety caps. I also picked up some ford shock towers to outboard the rears. Got my motor mounts from Dave's Unlimited for the LS engine. New upper spring plates for the rear. Not many pictures as I was just trying to get the frame done :drinks:
This is definitely going to be an interesting, unique direction to take a build. I am anxiously awaiting further progress so that I can get a clearer understanding of the extension. Good luck.
Been real busy lately, well this is a slow go project/build. Anyways, updates. Got the frame back cut off a bunch of stuff, did lots of grinding and painting. Still not done yet. Soon hopefully. Finally got new donor engine out of truck, and picked up a slick center console off ebay for the memes.. Here's some pics for the subs. Thanks by the way, this is going to take a while, but the end product will be well worth the watch.
So got the lil 5.3 tore down at work this week. All in all, not to shabby. Nothing a hot tank wont fix. Having a camshaft custom ground atm. One issue, kinda a major one. Saw this as soon as I pulled the oil pan. #6 rod is bent. The cylinder wall on shows a shadow of the oil ring. No signs of rocking at all. Wrist pin on that piston was sloppy to say the least. Apparently PO ran this thing like this and had no clue. I ran the truck before buying it and I'm a tech and heard nothing. Only codes in truck where evap codes from sitting so long. Anyways, this is good news for me. I'm ordering a full rotating assembly. Taking block and heads for machine work next week. The lil 5.3 will soon be a 6.3L 383 stroker! 4" stroke and 3.903" bore. :beerme:
Ordered Cam kit, Lifters, Piston set and some other engine goodies tonight. So excited, the machine shop called yesterday, They already have the block ready and head work is done, So i will pick the heads up to do port and polish job myself until parts arrive next week. Then the final bore and assembly can begin. I decided to replace the bent rod with a stock one, and boring the block .030 " over to give me a nice mild 330 ci or 5.4 L with a beast cam with .610, .600 lift. Dish pistons to keep the compression down around stock. I'm still betting this thing will put over 300rwhp and torque to the 37's when done
Some of the goodies showed up today, Had to post some pics for the nerd porn.
:awesome:
PAC .660 rated springs with hardware. These things are sexy...
.030 over Cast Aluminum Pistons. No boost on this engine, forged not needed.
Pistons look great, took them all out and measured and inspected for flaws and burs.
Since the stock lifters and cam showed some wear I decided to give them a fresh up. Very nice kit from summit. Better quality than stock in every way.
Cam, timing chain, upgraded rockers and other stuff will be here next week.
Working on the frame and body of the heep some more tomorrow, More pics incoming :beerdrinking:
I know there's not much jeep to look at here lately. But this is part of the build for the TURD. And currently engine stuff is happening
Got some more goodies in today. Upgraded Factory LS rockers with comp cams kit. Ready to install from Michigan Motorsports on Ebay.. Heck of a deal when you send your rockers back. If your doing a LS swap, this is IMHO, one of the most crucial cheap worthwhile upgrades you can do. These replace the open face needle bearings in the stock rocker arm, which have limited travel, and if they fail.. tiny metal stuff going through your engine is bad .. mmmkay! Now these spin 360 and are closed bearings with snap rings. These will handle the new .610 lift cam just fine. The stock rocker arm is great, don't waste money on aluminum look good stuff(that you never see), when you can upgrade very cheap.
Next up is a billet, double roller Timing Chain set with everything included. Very damn sexy.:woot:
And some new expansion plugs and galley plugs, along with some new side bolts for the mains..
Going Friday to the machine shop to check on progress. Will update with more pics soon. This is my favorite part of the build, being a gearhead and all. I dont know, mounting the 37's is going to be pretty damn hawt lol.
Been a little bit since last update. Anyways, initial bore done on block, final hone on docket for this week. Heads are cleaned and milled. Valve seats reworked with a bit of an performance edge on top angles. Spring pressure and seats to be set up this week as well. Getting closer! :whacky:
Not much done today. Had to take apart a 70 C20 to help pay for the TURD build. Got the 231 tore down and cleaned. Going to make a hybrid with 231C from an S-10 and add the sye kit to the back half of jeep case and use the chevy front stuff and chain. And use a master rebuild kit to replace all the bearings.. etc.. Also here's the sexy frame extensions. They look exactly like the jeep frame. Killer. More work on that incoming once my safetcaps get here.
In case your wondering about the hybrid 231. here ya go. bolt pattern for a 700r4. Grab the adapter plate from chevy it'll fit the 4l60e. And the input shaft is 27 spline so I dont have to change output shaft of transmission.. or spend $700 on an adapter set. All this = stronger internals and match to the 4L60e.
My frame extensions. They look so good. Making slugs this week and ordered safetcaps for rear frame repair. 108" wheelbase incoming soon.
And here's for those who want to see the 1970 C20 :bop:
Going to start stripping down the 44's tomorrow. More pics incoming. Thanks for watching :iamhappy:
Well I got my axles stripped for the sandblaster and next is cutting, grinding.. grinding.. did I mention grinding? ???
Just a tip for anyone who would care to know.. Building axles is expensive, both in your time and your wallet :'(
