Tim's TJ Build

Hey everyone!
I'm Ginger, I'm starting a build thread for my boyfriend Tim. So a little bit about us, we're car nerds. After us owning diesels, trucks, turbocharged vehicles we ended up in the Jeep game. We had a kid on the way so our 2 door turbo rides we had at the time had to go. He ended up with an SRT4 neon that we traded for our TJ now.
Here's when we got it.

We got it with a 3 inch body lift and a 2? inch suspension lift, with BFG TA 31s on stock wheels. It was not too pretty. For it being a Michigan Jeep it was surprisingly not rotted. Granted it does have few spots, but nothing serious, yet.
Specs:
'99 TJ
4.0L
AX-15
Dana 30 front
Dana 35 rear
3.73 stock gears
Hard Top
Full doors
Custom front and rear bumpers

So its that time of year to order Jeep parts! What is on the list?
6" RC long arm lift
Junkyard 8.8 rear axle
East Coast Gear Supply 8.8 swap kit
SYE
Tom Wood's driveshaft
16" steel wheels
35" (315/75/16) Hercules Trail Digger M/Ts
And to take the dumb body lift off.
Everything is currently on its way, minus wheels and tires they are on the Jeep, since it is finally tagged and insured. Here's how she sits now.

That's all for now, I'll be updating as parts come in.

Well the saying "to assume makes an a** out of you and me" is true. We going on thinking the TJ has a Dana 35 in the rear, (like a lot of them do), we found the rear end chart and double checked, its a Dana 44 and is supposed to have a Trac Lock too. Sweet! Keeping the 8.8 though so when the 44 decides to give up we'll have a backup plan.

Tim has been working on the TJ since Tuesday, at his work. So it's pretty much whenever he has time to get to it now. Should be finished today hopefully. Been running into a few issues and found a spot or two of rust needing attention. You always find surprises when you get them up in the air lol. Also picked up some wheel spacers off of a friend, Tim wanted it to have a slightly wider stance. Next is to get the Savvy gas tank skid to replace the rusty OEM one.

Here's after the lift is installed. Now just gotta reduce the body lift.

Savvy gas tank should be here tomorrow to replace this rusty one. Ill finally be able to fill up without worrying about dropping the tank on the road. Lol. Yeah, that stock one is just that rotted.
So since I have a D44 in the rear and it looks to be in good shape when I opened the cover, I'm going to selling the 8.8 and getting a Spartan locker. The Track Lok LSD in this thing sucks.
With some money left over to get the body lift reduced. I'm gonna take it down to 1.25-1.5" so I can do a "tummy tuck" in the future.

Going wheeling this weekend at Bundy Hill!

Well not going to Bundy Hill, but we are going to some trails in Newaygo. Gas tank skid didn't show up either so I called and they said next week. Not sure what tracking number I was following? Either way I didn't get a damn thing. Lol. Ratchet strapped my tank in until it gets here.
Selling 8.8 tomorrow.
Got a Spartan locker coming next week too

Today I tried sneaking my locker in at work while the boss was out and we weren't busy. As luck would have it that didn't happen. I got everything all tore apart people were coming in, boss came back, he wasn't happy. Lol.
The deal is you CAN'T use a Trac Lok carrier to use with a lunchbox locker. It has to be an open carrier. I wish I knew this sooner, I couldn't find any write ups on this and now I know why. Hell, I could barely find any write ups worth a damn on how to get the shafts out. Oh well I figured that out. I thought all 44's were c clips. Now I'm searching for a carrier before continuing. Ill probably have another shop finish the install so backlash is correct, that and no more working on the Jeep at my work.

I found a carrier out of a bronco but I seems a lot smaller I hope it still fits. I won't know until Monday. Anyone know if all the d44 carriers are the same. I know the rubis and zj's are different but I don't know about mine and the bronco

. Just make sure the carrier is whithin the same carrier break. I believe it is 3.73 down and 4.10 up. Nice rig.

We did its the same carrier break. I checked at work and it is the right one. It seems smaller because the housing part for the spider gears are smaller, but the width overall is the same. Optical illusion I suppose. And thanks, Its getting there

Also forgot to add, the reason that crappy Trac Lok wasn't working was due to some broken clutches. I'm shocked it didn't damage anything or make some noise, I'm glad it didn't. Tim got the Spartan locker in the "new" D44 carrier. He should be bringing the Jeep home today if all went well. He had another shop set the backlash, since he's no longer allowed to work on it at work. Lol.

Believe or not there wasn't any noticeable noise. I just bought a locker since the LSD was doing its job. The clutches have no material left, it's just all metal. Then when I started tearing into it I discovered this. I'm just glad it didn't mess up the entire rear axle.

It was warm on my day off to where I could get the skid on. Luckily there was a write-up online of how to do it, as they didn't send any type of instructions with it. Not even a sticker either. So now I have to cut part of the hitch that's made into my bumper (a homebrew bumper that came with the Jeep). Which is no big deal since I'm not gonna tow with it. The skid looks a ton better than that stupid rusty one. Speaking of which here's how rotted it is.

Or what's left of it..

Edit: apparently there was a write up on their website. must have looked it over. Either way I prefer having paper instructions, less headache than touching your girlfriend's phone with messy hands.

I took my faded flares off hoping to give it a better look, and eh yeah I think ill be getting some flat fenders. These have had previous rust repair and it wasn't done right.
Went to Bundy Hill and wheeled it for the first time.

After my last wheeling trip one of my control arm ends (the part where you build the bushing into the end) came apart. There was a set screw that came out and it fell apart from there. The whole end is now trash. So I called up Rough Country a few days ago about and bam I have 2 new ends today. At least I have a back up one now lol.

P.S.- no this isn't typical. There was paint in the thread keeping it from seating how it should.

Blew a brake line on the Jeep. It looked like it was rubbing my tire some so I put it more out of the way to keep it from rubbing completely through. But there was a spot where the steel was gone but the plastic inside the line was intact. Some stupid lady cut me off and I had to slam on them hard and bam, it blew. My current replacement is now a 90-95 Chevy 1500 2WD brake line. (yes it must be 2wd, I got 4wd the first time and it wouldn't work). Same length as I need for my lift, it'll do until I get another steel braided line.
