I am following a similar issue in other forums and know of two cases where the removal of the inner boot and the skid plate above the trans (under the floor control bezel) created successful results. (no JOG)
First indications are that the skid plate (#8 in earlier posted pic) is pushing the inner boot hence creating extra interference with the shift lever. (this might get compounded with inner boot stiffness/durometer in very cold weather) I suggested to him to slot the skid plate mounting holes around the studs and retest.. I will keep you updated.. I have some of his pics and will post them as soon as he gives me permission..

Dropped off at the dealership again this morning. They are going to dig a bit deeper into trying to figure this out. I printed off a copy of this thread so that they could see some of the insights posted here. Thanks to all. Will keep you posted.

I received a call today from the dealer, telling me they are going to order me a new transmission and shift tower. Chrsyler is aware of this issue but has not identified a root cause.
I wrote a letter, and it was elevated from the Dealer to the feild engineer responsible for the state. I think this will be a recall in the future. I couldn't be more happy. |

^ That's great. Took mine in for the problem last week, then when I get there to pick it up they said, you'll need to bring it back when we have a transmission person here! Gee ... that's what I booked the appointment for.
Anyway, I will be heading back shortly so we'll see how it goes...

Just got off the phone with the service manager. He had spoken with the Chrysler Field Tech. The Tech is familiar with the issue and has authorized the dealership to replace the transmission assembly and shifter. Have to wait a week or so on parts but looks like a solution may be in sight.

I am in Minnesota... probably the same rep. They said he has a 6-state area. At least one of them is out there doing their job!
I would assume this is a potential recall... they just need how to fix it instead of replacing everyones transmissions! |

Okay... dropped off this morning at the dealership for replacement of the transmission and shifter assemblies. Apparently they are replacing everything from the transmission to the shifter knob. Should have it back in a couple of days and will provide another update then.

i have narrowed it down to the shifter boot (the one on the top, not the one on the sled) on my jeep anyway.I have had the whole console and boot assemblies out, putting them back in one at a time a few weeks apart, it didnt start popping out until i put the top one back on. I also had a meeting with the state jeep rep, he told me the "your jeep is the only one we know of that has this problem" story. So i was able to get his email address and permission to pass it on to others who are having this same issue so that the ball can start rolling on a permanent fix. If anyone is interested pm me your email details and i will forward his addy to you. it doesnt matter to him where you are from it just to show that the problem exisits. In the mean time, try taking off the top boot-the one on the console- and see if yours still do it and post up your findings. Mine seems that the boot does not have enough travel in it for the forward shifts, (i actually had it jump out of
3rd the other day on the way to the dealer with the boot installed) it like the hole for the stick is to far rearwards in the boot. the dealership checked part no's, there is no difference between the US boot and the Export boot, so yours will be the same as mine., i have some pics of takeing off the boot if anyone needs help, all you will need is a trim tool or even a butter knife and about 2 mins. |

here are the pics of how to get the boot off. Pull straight up on the shifter knob, it will come straight off with no tools, Then with your trim tool or butter knife, between the trim and the console, lever the trim/boot assembly up on both sides and the assembly will pop off. there are 2 clips at the rear and 2 hooks at the front. slide it up off the stick. be careful of the clips as they will scratch up your console bad, might pay to put a towel or rag down to protect the top of your console. i also found that the sled was wrenched down on the wiring harness under the console real bad, crushing the harness by 3-4mm, this would only give me trouble in the future, so i spaced the sled up with a few washers on the 3 rear most studs to reduce the crush on the harness. Worth checking yours while your in there.

Now I am starting to suspect the position of the floor console bezel vis a vis the position of the shift lever..That relationship doesn't come from the same data lines.. Having the console more to the rear might affect the tension (stretch) being generated in the outer boot once you are in first gear..
Anyway again thanks for sharing..

Received the Jeep back late yesterday afternoon complete with brand new transmission and shifter assembly. I IMMEDIATELY noticed a difference in the shifting. I would not have described the act of shifting as loose or sloppy prior to the replacement but now would easily characterize it as TIGHT or FIRM. (May lend itself to the loose boot theory)
There is not nearly as much play in the shifter itself and even the shift pattern (although the same) seems much closer together. Imagine the distance between 1st gear and second gear remaining the same but the horizontal distance between 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear being substantially closer. So far there have been no additional instances of JOG and the shifting feels much improved. I am hopefully that the issue is completely resolved. Thanks to all for their input and comments. For those of you who continue to struggle with the "Never heard of it before" response - keep pushing and ask that your dealership contact the Regional Chrysler Tech - THEY have heard of it and are the ones authorizing the replacements/repairs. |

I too have the same JOG problem with my 08 JK 4-door. It's at the dealership right now and has been for a week. I refuse to take it back until they fix it. They fed me the B-S lines of "haven't heard of it, can't duplicate it, I must not know how to put it in 1st gear all the way, opererator error"...and so on.
I printed off this thread (and many others that addressed the same issue) and took it into them to show them that they are full if shit...it's a known problem and has been ever since Jeep changed to the newer 6-speed tranny and they need to fix it. They attached it to my paper work and told me they would call me back when they have a solution. Three days later and still no phone call. I have a complaint into Corporate as well but I don't know how much good that will do, if any. HEATED!

Update...Corporate was no help, typical buracratic b-s. However, I went down to the dealership and drove my Jeep myself with a mechanic in the passenger seat and guess what...after 40 minutes of driving around town, it did it. Jumped violently out of first gear. Now they can't say that it couldn't be duplicated or that I don't know how to drive a stick! I will post again with the dealership "fix".

I'm sitting at the dealership now with the same problem described, JOG out of first from a stop. I'm glad I joined this forum and found that I am not alone. Doesn't do much for my confidence in having bought a 2010 Wrangle only three weeks ago. However, at least I know it's not just me. If they can't reproduce the problem, I'll show them the info posted by USAntigoon. Has anyone had success in solving this problem?

From all of the research I did, Chrysler is aware of the problem but not the root cause. Probably the reason no recall has been issued. I and others seem to have had the situation rectified by having the transmission and shifter assemblies replaced under warranty per the authorization of a Regional Chrysler Tech.
Please post your progress and findings. |

Was able to reproduce the problem after only a few minutes of driving; however, I was told that it popped out because it was not in first. I informed the hea techguy that it was as far into first as I could get it and that I wasn't shifting any differently than any other time. He said that he'll write it up as makng sure that the gear is in first before taking off. Didn't want to see the threads reporting the problem. Said he couldn't do anyhing with that. Aaaaargh!!!

It might be worth you time to talk to the Service Manager. Insist that he call the Chrysler Regional Tech. Be persistant. It took me a couple of months of back and forth with the dealership before we finally got the Chrysler Field Rep involved and he approved the repalcement. Each time the JOG occurred, I made the dealership aware. I took it in multiple times and they were able to document the on-going problem.

End of Saga 1: The problem was summarized as could not duplicate problem during the road test, but road tested with customer and transmission popped out of gear because the gear shift lever was not fully engaged. The gear does not pop out when 1st gear is fully engaged. He checked the TSB's and there was no listing for the problem with the 2010s, but acknowledged that there was a listing for the 2008s and 2009s. I requested a number to register my complaint and called them while still at the dealership. I told the Chrysler rep that I've driven manual transmissions and have never had a problem with finding first gear. I referenced the messages posted on this forum and told the rep that if so many people are having problems finding first gear, then they need to do a better job at designing the gear shift. I bought my Jeep as a birthday present and this problem is tarnishing my initial feeling of as new Jeep owner. I know I'm whining, but I'm drive out of first hesitently, anticipating the gear pop or else shift back and forth in and out of first three times before I trust that it's in first. Has anyone else been told that it's operator error? That's what got my goat. Again, whining.

Just try to remove (or pop loose) the outer boot bezel and see whether this makes a difference..

I have just recently experienced this and it was rather violent. I put the shifter into 1st reved and let out on the cluch slowly and then bam
the stick poped out and scared the living sh*t out of me. Now that I experienced it, i believe it actually has occured to me a few more times prior just a lot less violent cause i wasn't reving the engine as much. I only have 6600 miles on my wrangler unlimited x. Is this enough cause for me to bring it into a dealer?

Well, today I was able to pick up my Wrangler (after a week and a half of it being at the dealership) with a BRAND NEW TRANNY. Crossing my fingers that the problem is over, but I have a feeling it will do it again eventually...what can I say, these 6-speed transmitions are crap. I really want my old YJ back! ![]() For all of you still dealing with the dealership saying they can't duplicate or telling you that you can't drive a manual (I think that's what got under my skin the most!), stick by your guns. It IS a safety hazard when crossing multiple lanes of traffic. Refues to drive your Wrang off the dealership's lot until they fix. Call Corporate...it's a dead end, but do it anyway. Make an appointment everyday to go drive your Wrang yourself with a rep in the passenger seat. Eventually it will JOG and you will win your battle. Food luck all! |
