I have seen it added to YJs before. Not sure if you can on a TJ, but I would be willing to bet you can. Either way, its probably a $1500ish upgrade I would imagine.

Even if it could be added, I wouldn't. That's why you have a removeable top
I'll be honest, I have AC, it's nothing to brag about. It's not nice and frosty like a car's AC is. It's a little colder than just the vent setting in blue. Certainly not worth any cash. The only time I run it is during rain because my tires get water and sh*t inside my Jeep with the window down. Other than that I'd never turn it on.

Air is not standard?? It is on all 4 doors!!
And Groundhawg, my air can freeze you right out of my 4 door softtop even when it is in the high 90s.. Sounds like there is something wrong with yours.

I was going to ask the same thing. I've not even seen a base sport 4door without it. Don't know about 2 doors. Now that may be all Florida based Jeeps.

I mostly like to poke fun at JK's
...but figured I'd chime in a lil since I've gone to school for this. I'm not a pro with this stuff, but I can give you an idea.
As was mentioned, I'm sure it could be added, but it certainly won't be cheap. You'd need to purchase a compressor, new belt, evaporator, condenser, plus all the lines and quite possibly some of the wiring/electrical components. On top of that, you'd need to have all that stuff installed which is gonna be some big bucks...and then you'd have to have somebody charge it for you.
In the end, you would honestly probably be better off, trading your Jeep in for one with a/c.
Also, Groundhawg, I agree...if your a/c isn't nice and cold, you've got issues somewhere. Possibly just a leak that needs repaired followed by having it properly recharged.

I don't know, maybe it is wrong? I've got an 07, I wouldn't think it'd be bad yet, but who knows.
It can stay crappy. I almost never run it anyway
PS...ignore my post above then

I checked the Jeep website 2 dr sports air is an option, 4 dr it is standard.
But heck, he lives in Michigan, what do you need air for? When I lived in Michigan I never had a car or a house with air conditioning.

all the posts
appreciate the replys ,here is my story.
I test drove a wrangler sport and it was fine ,the salesperson talked about all the options etc etc including air conditioning which at first i thought ,no i don't need that .(but maybe a good resale thing to get now for later )
I picked up the wrangler saturday during a big sales event at the dealership and they were running around like chickens ,so they never went over the vehicle etc.
So we took delivery and as i started to pull away it was quite muggey (warm to hot),and i could not find the ac switch ,sales manager said its on the dash and i said i was embarrased as i could not see it ,he then came out and said you don't have ac,the salesperson that sold this jeep aplogized for the mistake.
I would not have bought the jeep if i would have know ahead of time no air and what they were asking money wise for the whole package.
i trusted the salesperson and i screwed up.
As we drove away (murphy's law) that day the temp on the 401 to toronto was 28 degrees C ,thats warm and it was very uncomfortable---so that was one day AC would have been nice.
So i have the jeep ,(2 days) 500km and very disappointed with the dealership and they say they will install an AC unit .
So i was fishing around to see what its worth and see what they are going to so to fix this .When the salesperson talked about the jeep having AC i had a second person with me ,and we talked about it being a good deal with AC and other options for the price they asked

They use to joke about this on the radio here in Florida, especially south Florida that AC is not an option, but a mandatory item. I'm really surprised to here it is an option on the two door. With that said I find the air flow when moving with the top and windows down quite livable even on a 100 degree day. This was my primary reason for buying the Jeep. If I wanted something with the top up an AC on I had a million other options.
That is pretty stand up if they honor installing the AC for you with nothing in writing. Verbal agreement s are generally useless even with a witness. The contract I signed last Monday had a statement that they would not honor any agreement not in writing. This is why they did the we owe statement (The second key for my Jeep was locked up in somone's office that was not there that day) at the time of delivery for the Mopar money and the second key.

A/C can be installed on it, however, it will be costly. You have a few ways of doing this, piecing a kit together, which is basically buy all of the required pieces to install a/c. May find a jeep website that has a lot of it already for you.
Or piece it together from used parts, either people who removed theirs or junk yard.
There are a lot of pieces to it, and you may have to swap the dash internals out, since the evap is located in the dash.
You will need, but not limited to.
Compressor
dryer
evaporator
condensor
lines (metal and rubber)
expansion valve
wiring to turn the compresson on/off.
If you would like, I can get you a repair diagram for the a/c, which will show some of the parts and usually has diagrams showing part locations as well.
Email me at phillip.chauvaux@yahoo.com I will need to know the year and model specific to help you out.
PS. I have not installed a/c on a jeep, work on the TJ's a/c though.
However, I have installed a/c on my s10, so it is a labor intensive swap, but well worth it in the end.

my a/c on my 98 tj is very very cold (much colder than my 99 tahoe..)
Phillip, question for you, you may not know but my a/c running fine, very cold, freon level is correct BUT for some reason, the clutch, at random time will just stop spinning and air will get warm of course. turning the clutch by hand I dont feel / see any problems with it. any idea what would cause that ?

I'm assuming it only gets hot when you are at idle and not moving, or moving slow (parking lot speeds).
Alright, the a/c system has two safety switches built into the wiring.
Low pressure switch-if the freon level is low/empty, the clutch will not engage as this would destroy the compressor if it's empty.
High pressure switch-if pressure builds up, the clutch will disengage.
Most likely, your clutch is disengaging due to the high pressure switch. While it is normal for the clutch to engage and disengage while usage, the air should still be cold, if it's getting warm, ie:outside air. Then the fan isn't pulling enough CFM's accross the condensor to keep it cool. It's the same as if the engine overheats, you need to have a lot of air flow to keep the a/c system cooled (keeps pressure down).
So if you have the stock setup, then you probably need to clean the fins of the condensor, or upgrade to a heavier duty fan. You're in Las Vegas, so the temps are hotter, and while idleing, it will be common for the fan to be underpowered.
Email me, and I can send you some repair info if you're interested, right now though, it's time for lunch, so I'll be back later.

In MA you can undo a transaction for any reason within either two or three days, not really sure on the length of time but am aware of the purchase clause. As soon as I discovered the mistake, it would have been back in the dealer's hands with the transaction being undone. Bank loan or no. Then I would be looking for another dealer if they gave any scrap or hint of difficulty with the situation. If they played dumb on the rule, they would have a registered letter from my lawyer protecting my rights under the law.
My air is really cool. But I rarely use it. Mostly windows down and top down when I am able.

The dealer was pretty good about it all ,as he said he would even switch it with a wrangler w/ac but the lisencing registration government stuff he would have taken quite a hit (cost to him)
So he is going to install the air at dealer cost ,he needs the jeep for 2 days,i feel its worth while and i am going to go through with it
other than that i am happy with the new jeep
