| Cheap JK Security Available At Walmarts! Shipmates!
My wife and I were browsing Walley World today, and I ended up at the Hardware Department, while she was looking at Fabrics.
I ran across a neat little gizmo, that some other Jeepers said that they use for inexpensive Soft-Top Security. Damn thing works too! It's this. (See Link below Pic):
It comes with a Remote that will Arm/Disarm/Panic the Alarm Sensor. The Remote comes with a Battery, but you have to provide your own 3-AA Batteries for the Sensor.
I tried it out when I got home, and it works GREAT! 120db Alarm that sure gets your attention quick! I was considering getting a Proximity Alarm for my Jeep this Summer, when I've got the Soft Top off, but at a cost of $700 with Installation, I decided to look around some more.
This baby was $21 and some Change. Battery operated, and they'll keep it running for 1 year. The Sensor has a Low-Battery Warning Light, to let you know it's time to Feed-The-Baby new AA's.
I have the Covercraft Tailgate Pocket Pods on my Tailgate, like the ones shown here:
I used the Wall Mount Base provided with the Sensor, and attached it in the center of the right Pod, even with the Spare Tire Carrier. The Sensor faces forward, and covers the front seats, center console, and dash (Radio...), as well as the cargo area. I have my back seat removed, so I've got a wide open space between my tailgate and the front seats.
Before I mounted the Base, I used masking tape to mount it on the back, to see if it would work. I set the Alarm, waited 45 secs for it to Arm, then sat in the Driver's Seat first. As soon as my right arm touched the Center Console Armrest, it Beeped, warning me that the Alarm would sound within 30 secs. I turned the Alarm off, then turned it on again for another Test.
This time, I entered the Passenger side, and once again, as soon as my left arm touched the Center Console Armrest, it Beeped again for the 30 sec Alarm Warning.
Next, I unzipped my two side windows about halfway, and tried to reach in and grab my flashlights on the back of the seats, on the left and right sides. Again... it Beeped the Warning.
Lastly, I reached through the windows again, and tried to grab my Recovery Bag, and it Beeped again.
You can set the Remote to Chime or Alarm. Mine's set on Alarm. I did these tests in the garage, and with the Jeep Doors closed, and the windows zipped back up, my wife could hear the Alarm inside of the house in our living room.
Final thing I did, was paint the Sensor and Base Black, so it matched my Pod Pockets, and blended in. It only comes in White. When I had it mounted, you couldn't tell it was sitting in the back at all, unless you were looking for it. There's no blinking light on it to give it away. It only starts blinking when it activates, and 30 secs later, you get an earful of 120db Alarm!
It'll suit my needs for now!
Cheers!
BB

I take the top and doors off for the entire summer, I wonder how well this would work to protect my newly installed head unit. Thanks for posting, something to look into.

Is there a way to disable the 30 second delay so it would sound the alarm as soon as movement was detected? 30 seconds is a lot of time for a theif to snatch stuff out of your Jeep.

Thanks BB! I have two soft tops and there is not much you can do for security. Mine do sit alone in the desert often so it is always a concern.
This is certainly something I can play with and at least make myself feel better.
Thanks for sharing!!

Blackbeard, i was reading the reviews on amazon and saw your post on there. Hilarious, anyway, my complaint which is the same as many on the review page is the 30 second delay. This Motion Detector is double the price, but has a 10-15 second delay. Wireless Motion Detector | Can be use...340D] - $44.95

Thanks BB,
Looks like a gadget that I would be interested in. I'm probably going to try it out this spring when the soft top goes on it.

Yup! It's the same exact one as yours. I was playing around on Amazon, looking for Wireless Motion Sensors, and this one popped up. I thought it was too coincidental, that it looked exactly like yours, down to the Black Remote. I found the Model #, HS4340D, then looked at your link. Upper R/H corner of the package pic in red, shows the same number. I like the idea of a 10-15 sec Delay, rather than a 30 sec delay. I may just order this one myself, just to try it out, and compare it for the next few months, before the Soft-Top comes off. By then, I should get a feel for which one will last long-term.
Also JQ, FYI, after reading your comment about your new Head Unit, I did another Test. Testing the Sensor again, I opened the Driver's Door to reach for my Radio Head Unit, not getting into the Jeep just yet. As soon as my right hand got near the center Dash area, I got "THE BEEP OF DEATH & DESTRUCTION"... so, it works all of the way up to the front too! It's pretty sensitive, but doesn't activate if you peek in through the windows or walk by them. Schmo!
Sorry, it doesn't let you adjust any of the settings, other than from Chime to Alarm. I'm going to pick up one of JQ's Sensors above, and give it a try as well. For $28, it's worth looking into!
Thanks again JQ!
Cheers!

I don't get the whole delay thing . . . why would you invent an alarm that would alert the perp with a flashing light or small sound vs. blasting them with the alarm right off the bat . . . just doesn't make sense to me. Now if the little key chain thing beeped 30 seconds or so before the alarm sounded, giving me enough time to grab a gun and get to the vehicle to be there to surprise the perp along with the alarm 30 seconds later that would be one thing, but otherwise, the delay seems lame to me.

I do agree that there should be an option for no delay as well...but whattaya want for $20??

Amazon makes it too easy to order things online. I wish there were more hoops to jump through so some of the purchases would fall by the wayside. regardless, i'm happy with this find!

You're right, for 20 bucks, whattaya want, but I'd still like to smack the inventor.

Just got my $35 (after shipping) 10-15 second delay motion sensor alam in the mail today. Amazon doesn't even show the product as being shipped yet, but I'm not complaining.
Thanks again BB for giving me the cheap fix idea. I haven't decided where i'm going to mount it, i want it somewhere that you can't easily access it so the 'perp' can't just pop out the batteries. Maybe inside the sound bar if there is room.

Squirrels and birds OK but I wouldn't want to keep the beavers out. Does this thing do selective alarms?

Unfortunately the alarm doesn't have a setting to distinguish between birds and beavers, but on a good note, it will keep the uninvited beavers out just fine.
Speaking of beavers, kind of, did anybody else notice that there were quite a few superbowl commercials with beavers in them.

This might me what I'm looking for in regards to my cat deterrent.
Does this alarm reset itself after a certain amount of time? I can't have it going off indefinitely.
Thanks

And one last question for those that have used this one or similar ones. Does the "motion" that it detects have to be line of sight, or is it based more on proximity to the detector?

Hope that helps!
Cheers!

You must have received the GOOD one! I received mine Saturday, and it was improperly packaged (plastic mailing bag with no cushion material at all...). To boot, it had been previously opened, and was taped on one side of the package. Not surprisingly, it didn't work when I hooked it up.
Anyway, I sent an email to the company, and they humbly apologized for the shoddy shipping. They asked me if I wanted a Refund, Including Shipping Costs, or... would I accept an upgraded model worth $50 at no additional cost. I accepted the Upgrade at no cost. They're also sending me a Return Shipping Container for the old one. I received the Apology Email yesterday, and the new one was shipped today. Here's what they're sending:
and a link with info: Strobe .../font>
I'll let you know how the new one works out, when I get it. The description doesn't indicate how long of a Delay there is, between the time the Sensor detects movement and the Alarm sounds, so I'm hoping it's programmable. We'll see!
Glad yours is working out for you! I'm not sure how the Sound Bar location would work out. I looked at that possibility the other day, and can't figure where to mount it on there.
Best of Luck!
Cheers!
BB

BB, WTF, are you kidding me, look at that thing, strobe light, pivot base, the only thing that would make it better would be a perimeter pistol that automatically unloads on whatever steps too close to the vehicle. Well done on the upgrade!

Well done on the upgrade! | Yeah..... the upgrade will just have to do for now. I had been searching the Navy Surplus for one of these, that we used when I was Active Duty, but can't find one available just yet:
It doesn't have the Strobe Light, but it has Infrared and a 20mm Vulcan Autocannon that fires 4,500 Rounds Per Minute, up to 5 Nautical Miles. The Navy calls it, "Phalanx CIWS (Pronounced "SEE-WIZ", Close-In-Weapons-System)"... I call it... "Jeep Security!"
Cheers!

Well I thought of another question/concern. Do it work through glass (ie the windshield?)
Got in my Jeep the other morning and had muddy f'n cat paw prints on my hood.
I'm thinking of mounting this on my tailgate to project up and in. Should these get the desired effect?
Thanks
