I have a new 2011 wrangler (auto) with 500 miles now on it. I have not been above 11.6 mpg, does it ever get any better than this?

Thats way low, Is it stock? Bigger tires will ruin gas mileage and it isn't the best stop and go vehicle but I get 16.4 with a mix of city/long state roads and updated tires 285/70.

If you have stock tires, I would have the dealer check it out and maybe have them check to see if the right tire size has been programed in which would throw off speedo and mileage estimates.

Before you might hit the panic button, do the math when you fill up instead of depending on the computer. That will give the most accurate read on it. Don't forget to take into account whether you have a 2dr or unlimited (larger tank). If after a few fill ups you still avg. approx. 12mpg then I would say there might be a problem. You should get at least 19-20 hwy. and 14-16 city. Your mileage should get better after another 500 miles anyway, but your reported number does seem on the low side.

I get about 20 to 22 MPG on the road and I'd say 18 to 19 or so in town. I cost up to lights and down hill quite a bit.
I have a manual transmission and a light foot, drive the speed limit or just below.
I remember seeing a license plate in Nashville many years ago that sums up my attitude to driving, it had a picture of Satan on it and it read: "Drive on, Brother. Hell ain't half full!"

Mine averages 20mpg highway and 17mpg around town
630 miles on the odom now.
my wife drove it for 3 days straight and it was @ 16 mpg driving
pretty much the same circles as me.
Difference in driveing styles I believe. (she doesn't want anyone
to beat her off the line @ stop lights

With a stock '08 A/T, I get right about 20 mpg, both from the computer and by manual calculations. I've only driven on the highway a couple times since I got it and was getting 22-24 mpg on the computer. I haven't driven only on the highway far enough to calculate that manually yet.

I have a stock 2010 Wrangler Mountain Edition and I get about 18mpg with a Airad CAI installed but i drive city and stop/go a lot so it throws it down. Avg 12mpg seems really low, i would just try and manually calculate it and if its still low i would have it checked.

No way. You simply cannot average 20 mpg in town driving.

I am in a 2011 Rubicon Unlimited on 285/70/17 Duratracs and average around 15.5mpg with a mix of highway and city.

Honestly, I'm somewhat shocked as well. I've always gotten better than rated MPGs, especially with a manual, but I didn't expect the brick on wheels to do anywhere near this well.

I haven't had it long, but over the two tanks I've had so far, that's what I manually calculated. First tank was 19.5 mpg, this past tank was 20.7. I drive 26 miles round trip to work and back home and haven't left Madison on the weekends yet. I only drive a maximum of 55-57 mph on the beltline (less than half of my daily commute) and only go over that if I have to for passing or whatnot, and evening rush hour is usually stop and go with 90% of it below 30 mph. The rest is hurry up and stop for the next light. I'm light on the gas pedal and end up keeping RPMs mostly below 2500 when accelerating. I just take my time and enjoy the ride.

I have no delusions that I will always get this type of mileage as my Jeep ages or the seasons change (my previous vehicles always sucked gas in Wisconsin winters), but I definitely wouldn't mind if it did.

I get about 300 miles per tank on my JKU auto.
I was well aware of the mpg with every jeep I've owned. You front a chunk out of your pocket for the ability to go anywhere and have loads of fun. It can't be cheap as well.... its a simple win-lose scenario.

If you have a lot of hills you can get close. A part in my city is downhill for miles and I get up there. And the freeway at one point its so downhill for a long period that I can hit 30mph. Assuming the little dash light is kinda accurate.

slow acceleration will help your mileage.....the brick will never agree with a lead foot. give it some time and don't rely on the computer. check mileage @ the pump and your mileage should gradually increase as your engine breaks in.

Seriously, did we really buy our Jeeps to worry about the fuel economy? Guys, I worried about that for awhile and then realized I was having no fun. Stop worrying about the fuel economy. It you are getting great mileage in a JK, you are not having fun with it. Simple truths breed simpler living.

if I wanted to go fast I'd hop on my gsxr....the jeep is for creepin through the rocks and trail/beer riding. different strokes for different folks. I enjoy going slow in my jeep and find that I can get the same adrenaline rush @ 1-5mph over some really technical sh*t that I can get shreddin some twisties on the bike. if I wanted a baja rig I wouldn't have gotten a jeep. my wife's MINI blows the doors off the jeep on the road and it's blatently obvious that jeeps are NOT meant to handle well on the pavement so I take my time and get the best mileage I can @ $3.90 a gallon driving 100 miles round trip to work mon-thurs.

Mines a 2011 Wrangler Sport 2 door.First tank not so sure of. Second 17.9 third 19.1 almost all highway miles. Ill take it!!!

I agree that you shouldn't worry about the gas mileage, but I don't see how getting great gas mileage = no fun. I get just as much fun if not more driving slower because it means I get to spend more time in the Jeep. I know it's not a speed demon, and I don't want it to be. If I have somewhere to get in a hurry or want to save gas, we'll take the wife's focus. Until then I take the Jeep out every opportunity I get.

Mine was as low as 4km per liter on my first and second refuel. Then it went up to 6km per liter. Now I am at 7+ km per liter. Fuel consumption is real bad compared to other trucks, like my 1997 and 2003 Toyota Prado. But my 2011 Rubicon is growing on me still. If this remains the only issue then I am a happy camper.

I'd have to disagree a bit. Gunning a jeep at each light hitting 3k+ rpms and getting less mpg is more fun than staying below the 2500k mark and getting better mpg? Seeing how a jeep is not a street bred beast, I can't see how since all you will accomplish is wasted gas and still make acceleration.
Have you taken your jeep off road at all? That's is where the fun is at. So the more you can keep in your tank while on the streets is more gas you have for the fun off road. That is my opinion.

Now if you were talking about a gas hog sports car on the streets, then I'd agree with you. But you're not, so I don't.

I have a 2010 2 door with 33x12.5 tires on 17x9 inch wheels and get 17.5 in the city and 19-20 on the highway. Those MPG's were accomplihsed after installing Superchips Flashpaq, K & N CAI and MBPR performance exhausts. MPG before the perfromance mods was 14 in the city and 16 on highway with the larger wheels and tires. Stock MPG was about the same as I get now.

My 2011 with ~4500 miles has averaged 17-18 mpg consistently. This is a combination of city and highway driving. I did get as low as 15.5 mpg this winter, but average is 17-18 range.
Do the math yourself. If you are truely getting 12 mpg, I'd have the dealer check it out.

I get 14.5 on mine.I got the 4 door auto 5.13 w/ 35s.I was hoping it would get better after the regear but it stayed the same...oh well its all good.

My apologies for saying going slower is not fun. I like the gsxr owner, have a sport bike for fun. I have a r1. My point was simply that if you are really concerned About mileage, try a Prius or CR-Z, or hybrid. No sweat and i will not tease you about it. I baby my jeep around town too but smash the pedal when hitting the mud. I just don't worry about the fuel until the yellow light comes. That being said, I know some of you on the coasts in in bigger cities are also paying a lot more for gas than me so, I understand if you are watching the mileage a little closer. My bad for not being more sensitive to that.

My mileage is slowly going up while I drive "Grandma" to breakin the new gears-

It's gone from (computer), 15mpg to 15.4 mpg in 20 miles--

80 miles more, to take it very easy, then I'll start doing the actual math figures !!

I've got a 2010 Unlimited 4 door 4WD with 3.73, stock tires & rims, 6 speed: I drive mostly back roads to & from work (55+- mph with wife & kids), typically the dash shows an optimistic 19+ MPG, calculated is 18 something consistently.

On a HWY trip with the wife & kids + cargo I got 18 something MPG calculated and that was 70+ mph. I have under 5,000 miles showing as of this post.
