My new Jeep came with 255/75R17 Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires. I have been reading some reviews on these tires on Tire Rack and they have a less then favorable rating in the snow. Goodyear Silent Armors seem to be highly rated even in deep snow. Opinions please and I really enjoy this forum.

I have the Bridgestone Duelers on my 2009 Unlimited Sahara and can't wait to get her in the snow.. They Should handle GREAT!!

My 2005 GMC Yukon had Duelers and she was an animal in the snow.

On a side note; the best (By Far) snow tires I have experiences are the BFG A/T KO tires.. Super sticky and last forever!

Drive for conditions and you'll be fine, that includes your tires.

I'm not sure what area you're in or how bad your winters are so here's an example of what we get.


There's a Wrangler on 33's under there, I've made winters up here in a 2 wheel drive Toyota PU with highway tires so I would bet a Jeep, even with mediocre tires will do fine.

I would buy some real winter tires like the Yokohama Geolandar I/T.

I just got my Jeep and it has Goodyear Wranglers on it also. I think they are the worst tires ever. My old Jeep (97 Wrangler) came with them and the first time it snowed I was all over the road, I had them changed the next day. I've had 3 vehicles (2 Jeeps & F150) with Goodyear Wranglers and hated them on every one.

Jeeps don't handle as well as Yukons in snow...
I gave away my Duelers after 4,400 miles with them.

I live in Alaska and have Nokian Vatiiva AT's on my Wrangler Unlimited. They do very well in the snow, are very good in the rain, and have good traction in dirt/mud. They are a great all around tire. If you want a winter-only tire, then there are none better than the Nokian Hakkpeliitta, especially if they are studded.

If you're looking for winter only tires I've had excellent results with Blizzaks.

I had a set on my wife's car and they were awesome and now have a set for the JK sitting in the garage.

I have the same tires on my X and had them for a year and i thought they did well in the snow. There not as good in mud but i could go pretty far in 12 + inches of snow with no issues.

Goodyear Duratrac are very good in the snow as well in offroad use. Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S also perform well in the snow although a bit less aggressive on the trail than the Duratracs.

Yeah, the Yukon was a beast in the snow as long as you didn't have to stop quickly..

Now, I would agree with you on 2 door Wranglers not being very good in the snow as my Tj isn't that good.. I think the longer wheel base of the Unlimited in the snow will work killer!!

I was told the BFGoodrich All terrain T/A tires were pretty decent in the snow... which is why I got them. I head up to the mountains a lot in the winter and I need something that can hold it's own.
The Silent Armors are what I had on my last Jeep, an 06 LJ and they surprised the heck out of me when I went in the snow. I was going down a narrow switch back that had solid snow, melted snow(it was a sunny day on the mountain) and mud slush... it was VERY steep and as I was going down I met face to face with a truck. The driver was a jerk and wouldn't reverse even though he had the down slope and less to backtrack. I ended up reversing back up the snow, melted snow and mud slush without any problem and without 4wheel drive. I was VERY impressed after that.

How did the BFG MT's do in the snow?

I used the M/Ts last winter and have nothing to complain about. They handled super in snow. I haven't really tested them on ice though and that, I worry about.

We run siped 33" BFG M/T and they work fantastic in snow and ice. I was very surprised.

The BFG MT's do alright in the snow for mud tires, but on ice is another story. I imagine they'd do pretty well siped...

Btw, the DuraTrac are designed to accept optional #16 metal studs to enhance ice traction.
