Hmmm... I'm thinking Chrysler designed it that way for safety reasons. Personally, I've never had the want or need to watch TV whilst I drive. It's hard enough to navigate traffic and avoid the idiots out there.

On the aftermarket DVD players, there is a wire that attaches to the e-brake so that the DVD can only be played when the e-brake is on ... if the wire is removed and then grounded, the DVD will play any time - Not that I have done that to mine! ;-)

Cain and I both have kids and I still don't understand why they would need a DVD player. Either way, it's a safety issue but I'm sure there's a way.

One idea might be to go buy a portable DVD player. They are relatively inexpensive and your child can play it anywhere.

Not sure but in some states there may be legal issues with a DVD player in the front that is able to be viewed by the driver whilst the car is in motion.
That's why spending the $70.00 on the one that hangs on the rear seat may be a good investment rather than trying to defeat the controls on the factory one.

Let me say up front that I do not advocate this....but as an engineer, I was compelled to try this with another head unit I installed in my old truck. I'm not sure if the wiring diagrams are available, but if they are check and see if there is a wire that ties to the pressure switch on the handbrake (ties to ground when the handbrake is engaged). This would be how the dvd verifies that the vehicle is parked. You can take a standard automotive relay (the model number escapes me) and connect the switch leg to this wire and the other to ground. The power leads to the relay can be tied to the head unit's switched power. This is well documented on the internet - search for "parking brake bypass".

I'm sure you all are correct and we have a portable dvd player I was simply looking for a quick and easy method to override the system so it would play will in motion. The less stuff I have to drag along the better which is why I would prefer to use the in dash system if possible. Not really a big deal either way.
My JK is and auto. The ebrake for my model doesn't come into play it has some sort of park sensor because it will only play when in park.
