Greetings fellow Jeep fans,
I own a 2007 Jeep Wrangler X and love it, except for this problem I'm having with the transmission and I want to see if what I'm experiencing is normal or not (as background, I've owned 3 other jeeps, all also bought new 86, 91, and 99 and drove them to about 150,000+ miles before trading them in - none of them had this particular problem.) My gearshift lever has been vibrating back and forth over bumps more and more. It started at 20,000 miles and it's gotten a lot worse now at 31,000. I know that they always vibrate a little, but this is at least 6" to 8", maybe more back and forth as I go over the smallest bumps. It happens on highway, secondary and dirt roads, on very small bumps and big ones, too. It happens at any speed - 20 mph, 30, 40, ... it gets very scary at about 65 mph when I go over a bridge division on a highway. Once on a dirt road it even jumped out of gear while going over a not-to-big of a bump. And now it's started getting difficult now and then to get it into reverse. The mechanic at the dealership has told me that this vibration is completely normal, that Jeep gearshifts always vibrate like that. I told him that none of my other Jeeps ever did, and he said that this new model has a transmission that's mounted to vibrate that much back and forth. It just seems very excessive to me. What does everyone think on this one? help! signed, The Hiking Artist |

Im a Jeep mechanic and I own a 08 myself.....6-8 inches is alot man if its indeed that much....Im gonna guess mine moves a few maybe 3 inches...climb uder it and look at the tranny mount...could be loose or broken
as for reverse you have found the weak link in this tranny....Reverse is weak...not the gears or synchros themselves but the shift rail...The lil plastic peices that slide like to break off...theres a bullitin up to 06 on the 6 speeds... I have prob done the shift shaft job 8-10 times in the last few years.... The general symptm is that it pops out of Reverse when you release the clutch I havent seen it on the 7s or 8s yet but knowing Chrysler I doubt they have actually fixed it...Ill check the bulletins tomarrow and see if its on the 7 8 models but I cant remember seeing it...Gary

Thanks for your input Gary!
The dealership did check the tranny mounts and the four bolts holding the gearshift lever and said they were all secure. They've ordered a Rear Tranny Mount and are putting it in tomorrow, though the mechanic said he doubts it will make the vibration go away since he feels it's normal. |

Just a quick update. The dealership (who has been awesome on taking care of me and my jeep!) replaced the Rear Tranny Mount, however, the condition still exists. They called the Main Tech line and they suggested replacing the entire gear assembly, that it could be some hairline crack in something or some other unseen flaw, defect, broken piece, etc.
I hope this works! The service manager has assured me that they'll fix it somehow and I feel confident that they will. If anyone else has experienced this, I'd love to hear from them! The Hiking Artist (Hiking when I'm not Jeeping!) |
