| vibrating shifter
Hi guys,
My 09' X is a delight so far. But as it is my first 4x4 in over 30 years, I have to ask this question : The shifter lever does vibrate a tiny bit, more if the road / trail is rough. Is that normal ?
My cars with manual tranny never did that as if the tranny was completely isolated from the road.
What do you think ?
Thanks.
Terry

Check this thread out: 6 speed popping out of 1st gear.
Vibration in the shift knob is a common problem..you'll want to read all the posts though to get a full picture.

Mine vibrates a lot. Both my current 08 and my previous 08 the shifter behaved identical. It is especially in motion over rough terrain while wheeling. Not so much that you would have to play cat and mouse with it trying to get a grip on it to shift though. I think it kind of adds to the rugged feeling of driving a jeep. Probably a jeep thing...I like a little wiggle in my stick.

It's normal. Caused by the tranny being bolted directly to frame VS the body on bushings. Going bumpity bump down the road makes the difference between the two, physics takes over and the shifter knob at the end of the long lever starts a wigglin.

Keep in mind the length of the shifter lever and the way the shifting mechanism works..You WILL have vibrations.

Mine vibrated so hard that it ripped off and smashed my windshield out. Mopar said it was from all the power my borla exhaust gave my Jeep and they won't replace it....

On a new vehicle, there should be comprehensive coverage for the glass on just about all insurance policies. The bank requires it on mine for my loan. Even without the loan, I would have it. On comprehensive coverage for the glass, it is covered from dollar one.
And boy...that does seem quite strange. Did just the knob fly off or the whole shifter???

That claim of the tranny's interior piece(s) flying off into the windshield from a Borla exhaust system (which I believe that what the dealer said is buffalo cookies) kind of beg's the question "How?"
Though, it would answer with photographed evidence.

All the manual RWD car's i've ever driven (350Z, S2000, my bmw 1 series, my rubi) had a vibrating shifter. When in gear and blipping the throttle, the shift lever would sway side to side from the torque the engine is putting on them.
If it's excessive vibration, take it back to the dealer. If it's just vibrating minimally enough to blur the shift pattern on the top of the knob, it's no biggie.
This is my own experience. Take it FWIW

Like scottrock said...it's normal. Mine does it and my '93 K1500 Z-71 did it. Besides, the 2009 has the unlimited powertrain warranty. If it self destructs, you get a new transmission. No worries.
