1995 YJ 4BT cummins swap (Incredible Hulk part 2)

for those of you who havent seen my build so far, here is last years project:
bed liner question (newb)

Here is phase 2 of creating the Incredible Hulk with a 4BT Swap:

1. 4BT with intercooler, ppumped, 100k miles on it, pulled from a bread truck with a Borg-Warner T19 4 speed trans mated to it.
2. Motor mounts to mount the 4BT under the hood of my lil YJ: Jeep-Motor-Mounts
3. Adapter from Novak to mate the Borg-Warner T19 to my Teraflex Terralow NP231 transfer case: Adapting the T18 & T19 Transmissions to Jeep NP/NVG Transfer Cases
4. 4-link and king coilovers for new front suspension to handle the weight jump from a 4 banger to a 4BT

This week I am working on removing the 4 banger, AX5, wiring harness, and ECU as I have a buyer for it lined up. Saturday I pick up the 4BT and the fun truly begins. pics soon to follow!

Many other little goodies!
Swap to a 4BT diesel in the future? Most likely.

Here is what I have:
6" SOA Lift with stock leaf packs
Dynatrack prorock 60 axles front and rear
4banger motor with AX5 transmission and Terraflex Terralow NP231 Tcase
33" tires with 4.88 gearing

Here is where i want to go:
Coilover 4 link front, SOA leaf lift rear
4BT with Borg-warner T19 trans and terraflex terralow NP231 tcase
39" tires with 4.88 gearing

I found a 4BT with the borg warner already mated to it and will come with ppump, intercooler, accessories, and misc parts including what little wiring harness is needed. I plan on checking it out and picking it up saturday with the help of a mobile mechanic to make sure the motor and trans are sound.

I have a buyer for my 4 banger and AX5

I started the engine removal tonight and will slowly work through it as the week progresses towards the weekend.

Can I get some advice on what parts of the wiring harness to keep and what to get rid of? I would like to keep the stock headlights, blinkers, etc. all wired up which is part of this plug here that goes into the fuse box under my dash:

This plug here however will not let me pick and choose which parts i can keep, its either all or nothing into that fuse box:

This is the plug that goes to the wiring of the headlights and blinkers etc.:

I know the 4BT is a mechanical motor and really doesnt need any wiring to have it running aside from a starter to crank it over. However I would love to keep my stock gauges as well as harness under the dash if possible, is this doable? In all my digging I havent come across anyone discussing wiring harnesses and what to do there. I have all kinds of aux items such as a compressor for my air lockers, LED light bar, PA system and CB radio, Electric fan, etc.

Progress from Day 2:

Pulling and saving my distribution box. It was a bit more packed with dirt than i would have expected so it will get quite the cleaning before reassembly!

Pulled and saved the power wire coming off the battery going to the alternator and starter

Pulled the tcase and bolted the skid plate back up for now to support the weight of the trans while i get ready to pull the motor tonight. Going to clean the tcase up a bit, I love my teraflex NP231!

Pulled the shift linkage so the trans will slide out

ECU and the rest of the harness has been disconnected from the tub. I left all sensors still plugged in to the motor so that it will all come out as one tangled mess.

Here is another picture of the almost stripped motor:

I also pulled the fuel lines among many other things. The only thing left to do to hoist it on out is to unbolt the motor mounts and pull the slave cylinder line.

Hey look ma, I can see my prorock60 from up here!

pulled the exhaust. I cant express how many times this has fallen apart on the trails and how happy i am to get rid of it.

One final photo for good photo measure:

My next update from my work tonight will be a Fred Flintsone jeep!

I dropped off the 4 banger and the buyer was an absolute a-hole but I got it sold pretty fast all things considered. Then went over to pick up my 4BT! Met with a fellow off roader who is well versed with the Cummins 4BT and he looked it all over. We then hooked up a battery to it and fired the beauty on up! She turned over instantaneously and purred like a kitten and sounded great when revved. The motor was impressively quiet considering it only had a downpipe and was sitting in the middle of a wide open echo-y shop.

Got the motor home and into the garage. Whew it is heavy as hell... I dont know how I am going to squeak it in under the hood because the 1 ton hoist setting wont get it far enough back in the engine bay but I will figure that out some other time.

I am getting the motor cleaned up for paint by spraying it down with some degreaser and brake cleaner. It is shining up impressively well and the factory paint below looks like it is in good shape. I am going for a black motor with bright green valve covers to match my black and green bedlined "Joop". I can finally paint the engine bay black as well!

For reference, here is how the dirty side still looks in comparison:

Sweet!!

Make sure you're resizing those pictures to something closer to 800x600. I have a 21" monitor and they're 3x the size of it...

Yeah, I opted to save some cash and go for the rotary pump one when it actually came time to flip some bills. I figure ill upgrade and mod the motor as I need to, thats half the fun

anyways... no special updates today. I just keep on cleaning up the motor to prep for paint. Then i will be finishing cleaning out the engine bay and removing the fenders and front clip as well as dropping the gas tank to flush the fuel and see what condition it is in.

I think Walmart is on strike, I used up all of their cheapo cans of carb cleaner and they never restocked. Solution? Drive the same distance in the other direction to a different walmart and steal all of their stock as well Their stocking analysts will be confused as to what is causing such a spike in demand, muahahahaha (maniacal laugh).

This will sound silly, but I swear, Dawn dish detergent is THE absolute best thing I have ever used to degrease....anything, it is amazing, it does more than clean oil covered ducks, it works on engines too, try it.

I dont buy that "GOJO" or any other type of industrial hand cleaner anymore either, Dawn is where it is at.

TJ I am going to have to give that a try! A gallon of simple green in and im still not "gunk free" but I am pretty damn close!

Its the hard to reach places that are killing me right now.

I figured after getting covered in grime every night this week, I would treat myself to a night off and removed the front clip and fenders to easily get to everything as well as for painting purposes.

Thanks and oh yes... this is a perfect time to kill the last bits of remaining red. That will all be flat black as well as the inside of the fenders.

A bit of slow going this past weekend but a LOT is planned to get completed this coming saturday.
I prepped all engine bay parts for paint to convert them to black and started to reassemble my jeep in my "dining room" lol!

Gents.... the joys of not having a wife to get pissed when your dining room is full of jeep parts instead of a fancy table with lots of chairs that gets used twice a year.

Also I had a slight change of direction... I found an INSANE deal on a 700r4 and I really need that overdrive. The little voice in my head said I would be happier with an auto trans anyways so here it is. All $180 of it. The torque converter and inspection plate are out of frame.

After I got it in my garage, I started scratching my head... Where am i to get a chevy adapter kit?? Well, SH*T!!! They are hard to find and 1100 new so what to do? Well, I lucked out again and the guy who I got my 4BT from originally has one for $400!

This weekend I will be running through the motor for a little overhaul and mating the 700r4 and dropping her in the engine bay to test fitment of the motor mounts and tack weld them in. Then from there going to pull them back out and rebuild the 700r4 with some upgraded stronger parts and get the mounts fully welded in and adapter for the np231 Tcase installed and ready to go to finish the physical installation.

woot woot!

Next update!

Okay so I got some great progress on the swap this weekend! aside from moving my vacuum pump, needing a power steering pump, and needing to identify a shorter oil filter to clear the motor mounts... the motor is ready to go!

Going to finish up painting everything this weekend but here is the flat black color I am looking for:

Sparks for effect:

I also have the Chevy adapter plate bolted up so that I could also check clearance of the trans.

Once the motor was seated in, the mounts were tacked into plate to later be fully welded in. By the way, these mounts are AWESOME and fit the frame like a glove.

Definitely note that these mounts are so well engineered that everything fits like a glove. That being said, it can be a bit of a pain to get both isolators set in properly with ease. You might need to make use of a pry bar and hammer to get the drivers side isolator seated to let the motor and frame mounts come together. Passenger side in this photo was all set and the motor was pivoting a bit towards the passenger side. I suppose depending on how you have your hoist hooked up it will pivot to either side or maybe you're just that good to get the motor perfectly balanced on the first try

Pause for sleepy puppy intermission...

And VIOLA!!! Motor is situated in its new home and frame mounts are tack welded in place.

Here you can see how the turbo piping to the intake manifold wont work over the top. Also, the vacuum pump will not work in its present location. My diesel mechanic helping me out with this said that bracket is rare so maybe I can catch enough cash to counter act what its going to cost me to have a custom bracket made to move the vacuum pump off to the side of the motor.

Also here you can see how the oil filter wont fit. Well, it will, but you would have to pull the motor every time you wanted to change the oil lol! Hopefully I can find a filter that will work that is shorter than 5"

Are there any options for a remote mount for the oil filter?

I put in my cummins motor serial number in quickserve.cummins.com and it is actually pretty impressive how it tells me everything about the motor including parts. Sadly, since mine didnt come with a PS pump it doesnt have part numbers for that or where to get them lame.

If I recall.... A shorter oil filter might cause you oil pressure issues.

Personally I'd be looking to do a remote oil filter mount anyways since it's cooler

either that, or a horizontal mount for the oil filer.

Maybe I could punch my serial number in for you.

Nice! Wish I could do a 4bt swap but the cheapest one in my area is $2800

The guy who is very familiar with 4BTs mechanically is helping me source the part number of the shorter filter. I asked him if I would experience oil pressure or flow issues and he said no so we'll see if it is a simple fix or a remote fix

I was told the horizontal mounts are no good actually, something about the oil in the filter is the first oil used when the motor cranks over and the horizontal mount drains the oil so your first crank is not as lubed as it should be and can prematurely wear certain components. The 4BT mechanic that is helping me said really the only alternative if the shorter filter doesn't come through is to go remote (or cut the mount... but id rather not cut that masterpiece

Hey mine fully dressed with adapter plate was $2500 so he might not be far off on his $2800 price! What all comes with it for the $2800? At $2700 it included the intercooler and what not which is pretty awesome but no vacuum pump. in heind sight i probably should have gone for that unit but on the spot I didnt have much time to truly think it through to see how hard it was to get a PS pump for these things.. Ugh. I am still hunting for one!

Also, as an update... The 700r4 is going under the knife for some massive upgrades to handle the low end 4BT torque and the adapter kit and trans mounts are ordered up from advance adapters and will be here mid-june just in time for my birthday!

Swap to a 4BT diesel in the future? Most likely.

Well, that may very well be true about the oil filter, but the way I see it, the engineers who designed one of the best engines ever made put on a horizontal oil filter, I am sure it is fine. However, I will have to modify my mount to make them work with the vert filter.

Remote mount would be nice though, you could mount it somewhere to make is really easy to do an oil change.

So I can remove the filter threading and put on an adapter thread to fit a shorter filter is what it's looking like. We'll see how that goes!

oil filter adapter is in and the power steering pump is on the way... otherwise, she is all ready to drop on in!
