Enjoyed reading your 5.3 swap, good job!

Here is a link to another 5.3 swap with more ideas for everyone:

Jeep YJ 5.3L swap (completed) - LS1TECH

I started my collection of parts two weeks ago, will post my swap when I get started on the project.

I thought it was going to be an awesome build but the more I research it the more discouraged I get.. So far I gutted the yj out..easy part. The 5.3 is in the shop getting rebuilt figured it could use new seals and what not before i dump it in. I went through advance adapters for all my parts. I ordered...
-motor mounts/trans mount
-t/c adapter to 4l60e
-fixed yoke kit for the t/c
-lokar shifter kit
My list is missing a lot I know, will you post your list so i have some kind of reference? Also im from AZ my self where is the guy that was going to wire your harness located?

Don't get discouraged!!! It all seems overwhelming at first, but just take it one thing at a time and before you know it you are done! You can always contact me for help! There is lots of info on the web also. LS1tech.com was a big help too, lots of Chey info there.

I bought almost everything from Novak. More expensive than AA. The quality is A+ from Novak and I have heard good things about AA.

Here is a short list for you:

Radiator and fan (get a good set up, you know how hot AZ is! My jeep never gets above 210 with the Novak set up, even with the AC running.)

Radiator hose- I took me at least 10 trips to find a hose that would work. PM me and I will send you the hose numbers.

Trans cooler lines - I re-used the existing radiator my YJ had. If you don't have one, GET ONE!

Exhaust - I couldn't get the stock exhaust manifolds to clear and bought headers. You will also have to run custom exhaust. I paid $500 for my exhaust set up, NOT including the headers...

Fuel lines- You will have to plumb in a pressure regulator to reduce the fuel pressure down to 65#'s. You also need a return line. There is an inline regulator made for Corvettes that will do the trick. It has a built in return line. I got my set up from Novak, but you can do it cheaper by buying directly from a parts house and building the lines yourself. Google it, I found it on Ebay for sale.

Engine mounts- I used Novaks because they tell you exactly where to weld the mounts. No guessing! Also, they have adjustments on them that allow you to move the motor forward or backward 1/2" at a time. I moved mine forward 1/2" for more firewall clearance. Because I did, I was able to re-use my driveshafts and saved some $$$ getting the Jeep back on the road. Im not sure AA has the same option?

VSS- Make sure the AA adapter has a threaded port for the Chevy VSS sensor.

I can't remember the shop name for wiring. I have the guys business card somewhere and will see if I can find it. He was in Mesa off Main.

What part of AZ are you in? PM me and we can exchange info.

You're gonna have to upgrade axles too.

I have a set of D44's in the garage off a Wagoneer. Just need some $$$ to get them geared and locked with ARB.

Speaking of axles, my rear is making a little clunking noise. I cannot feel it, but I can hear it. Its not my u-joints, those are all brand new.

It only happens when I accelerate from a dead stop. If I start off slow, no noise, if I give it some gas, it kind of clunks. It almost sounds like the rear brake pad is sticking and then snapping loose.

Could it just be axle wrap creaking and popping?

Yeah... What's your drive shaft angle?

Its at 7 degrees, the transmission is the same but pointed down. Angles are not a problem, everything turned out nice. I know I still get axle wrap though.

Its not the u-joints, they are brand new.

I have a little play in the driveline when its parked. I can grab the driveshaft and move it a little bit, back and forth. Almost make it "clunk" by hand. I think its my transfer case. Maybe the gears or chain is worn out? It's the original, as far as I know never rebuilt. I haven't been able to afford a new one yet. Should it have some play?

It could be the crush washers in the rear end?

You called it Jason! I can't believe one is worn out already...

I am having another issue now. The last few days my Jeep will not crank over? When I turn the key and it just "clicks". It seems to happen after driving for a distance when the Jeep is hot. The engine compartment is SO HOT! I cannot even touch the battery it is so hot!

If I disconnect the battery cable, it fires right up!

Any ideas???

It looks like the grass needs more water, maybe some fertilizer?

I would suggest a tire on the Jeep also...

Thanks. 92 on 35x14.5 thornbirds. I just swapped out my seats today Still got to put the drivers side in though. Found some real clean seats from a 02 cavalier in the junkyard. 15 bucks each. Super comfy. Temporary though. I'm gonna throw in some nice black ones at some point. Your jeep looks pretty bad ass too!

It sounds like your C-clip broke? That would let the axle come loose and out.
