95'-yj with 05'-4.0 swap.

Hey Jeep Fans.. I picked up a 95' yj a couple years ago on it's way to the scrap yard..Upon my first inspection of this rust free Jeep , I noticed something was very different about this motor and transmission under what looked like a giant bowl of spighetti someone dumped on top of the motor. "WIRES"- everywhere...What a nightmare..
After unplugging all the sensors and removing the tangled harness I looked up the numbers on the valve cover..
To my pleased surprise Someone installed a brand new 05' 4.0 with a nsg-370 - 6-speed transmission. I didn't know Jeep put a 6 speed in any year and I knew Nothing about them and very little about the newer 4.0 distributerless motor. I finally found a 05' Harness - ECM - and pds.. I researched all the wires and hooked them all up crossing the obd-II computer with the old obd-I jeep..I got all the lights , turn signals , and everything working , and even got it to turn over. But I couldn't get any fire or fuel..
I almost lost it trying to figure out why , and decided to start from scratch and go a different rout...
SO HERE I AM ....
I'm doing this thread as a learning process for me and anyone else looking at doing this swap , Anyone who knows something about this process is welcome to give insight , opinions , or offer solutions as it goes along..I'll try to post as many pics as possible for people like me who likes the books with pictures ..

Sounds like you found a great starting point for a project. What do you have for schematics that you are working from?

05' Motor "Need Harness ecm-pdc , and more

I changed the distributor over to a 94' plug wire style and I changed the intake manifold off the same Cherokee I got the distributor from making it dual fuel line instead of single..I don't know if it was nessisary to change the intake , but when I find the 95' - 4.0 wiring harness , I would like all the plugs and sensors to plug and play..

I have a notebook full of pinouts for the 05' ecm 95' Jeep firewall plug , and different plugs around the Jeep..
Should I put some schematics and pinouts on here ?

This Jeep was on it's way to the scrapyard. The owner was on his way to prison soon and he had to get rid of everything .. It was a right place - Right time thing..But the front and rear windows were busted out the fuel tank has holes drilled in it for gas removal , and the dash came in a box.. There were no seats carpet or seatbelts..I didn't mind getting those things for it since I only paid $500.00 for the Jeep..The Hard doors and top fit like a glove and close like a new one..
The most important part is , he had the engine and trans. installed and welded professionally , they hooked up the complete clutch system , and put a 1-inch body lift in to clear the transmission..

yj is not my favorite body style but there are things I like about them over TJ's..Here it is after new seats , new carpet , and somewhat together.. I'm building it for my wife . I have a 99' TJ and I'm restoring a 1981 CJ Renegade for my 11 year old son..It will be his graduation gift when he graduates High school.. He's looking forward to it. He LOVES his Jeep..."and so do I"....

I've read about people who swapped out there 5 speed for the 6 speed in yj's , and I heard it's been done 2 different ways .. 1) Leave the cps where it is on the bellhousing and clip the wires.. or.. 2) Remove and relocate it by drilling a new hole in the passengers side of the bellhousing .. In my case I haven't had the motor split so I don't know what's in there for a flywheel , and I'm not sure if it matters..
.............Any suggestions ??? Thanks.......

While it was missing parts, that YJ is super clean! I couldn't imagine sending that to the junk yard. I'm quite interested in the swap and interesting that it has a 6 speed. Keep up the good work

"Thanks Cptcrunch" , Here's an update.. My wife finally got her income tax check in the mail today giving her the money so I can finish her Jeep.. Anyone who has info on this swap please feel free to chime in if I'm missing something or need something I don't mention...
My Plan is : to find a donor 94'-95' with a 4.0.. , I'll pull the dash , Dash wiring harness motor wiring harness , and all the engine sensors.. I'll also take the throttle body and those sensors , as well as the computer and..PDC..
My Worries : I think the plan of taking all things above from the donor will make it run,,,, BUT I'm worried about the cps "Cam pos. sensor" ,, I'm not using anything from a 95' on the motor trans or clutch system..I don't know whats inside this bellhousing . All I know is everything is stock 05' .. The motor and transmission has never been split ..
I'm worried the 95'- computer won't read the 05'- cps..
Anyone with any info on this subject is welcome to give insight ..

I couldn't believe my luck when I came across this jeep.. The same key that fits the Ignition , and rear door also fits the hard doors.. I have had a lot of jeeps in my time but I have never found one this age with the original hard top and doors. It's also 99.9% Rust free.. something else that's hard to find..The man that sold me this Jeep bought it new in 95' and blew the 4-cylinder in 2010..It has 110,K orig. miles.. I'm the second owner..He said the top has been off about three times since new..
I drive a 99' TJ , I offered to trade my wife my TJ for her YJ.. She said she wouldn't take 2 of my Tj's for her YJ... lol .. That's my Girl...

I put a fuel injected motor out of a 1996 or 97 into my YJ.. I ended up just pulling the entire wiring harness and slapped it into mine. it was all pug and play doing it that way. no muss, no fuss no messy applicator brush...

AS for the computer just be sure it is set up for the right motor and trans combination. it will not idle right if it isn't..

Any questions drop me a line, if I can help I will gladly do so...

A 97' is a obd2 - Do you're stock yj gauges work ? My 05 had the wireless distributor , with overplug coil pack ,and the cam pos. sensor is on the passengers side of the bellhousing 6-speed..
I had the 05' computer and wires hooked up , the motor spun over , all lights worked , signals , but it wouldn't get fuel or fire..I think if I could get it that far again , I might be able to figure out a way to get it to spark with this older model "Plug wire" distributor .. Not sure I wish I knew more about it..
I also changed the fuel rail back to a double line , But I'm thinking about changing the fuel tank to a 99' , that would allow me to run the single line fuel rail that came with the 05' Motor...
"Any thoughts" ??

I'm looking for a 90'-95' wiring harness , all the motor sensors , and a ecm.. Is there anyone out there with any of these things.. I can't find a wrangler at a junkyard anywhere.. I tried to use one from a Cherokee but every wire is different ...
Also , If I can't get the cpm from the the 6 speed to work , can I use a stand alone Ignition "DUI" , Distributor ????

O.K. I ordered a used 1995 wiring harness from a scrap yard in N.C. , but when it came via - UPS - only half of it was there , and the scrap yard don't have a 95' ecm, So I have to wait on the rest of the harness and find a ecm..

I need info - Someone please answer this question .. "IF" I can't get the 95' Computer to recognize the 05' Cam position sensor , and I can't get it to work out , CAN I get a "Stand alone"- DUI Ignition and distributor to work ??
My Motor and transmission is an 05' . I6 - and a 6-speed..The cps is on the passengers side.. The 95' cps is on the drivers side and reads from a different spot on the flywheel..I've read posts on this issue but I don't know anything about how it all works.. I'm leaning towards a stand alone Ignition...
What do you guys think ???
The bell housing plug on the left is the cps plug on this 6-speed.

Documentry to self

I got the sensors and an alternator , but the alternator wont work with the 05' mount and the 6 speed bell housing cps sensor is questionable.. I still haven't heard from anyone to tell me how I might deal with that situation .. I kept the 05' intake manifold , but I think I'm going to have to change it over to the 95' intake due to the air temp. sensors that leave empty plug ends hanging , OR I could drill and tap holes in my intake ??
Well - I guess I'll figure it out .. I started this thread for advice and feedback but this seams to be a documentry to self.. I'll keep updating just in case some other "idiot" decides to put a 05' motor and 6-speed transmission into a yj ...Maybe they'll learn what NOT TO DO.. Starting with putting a 05 motor in a yj with a 6 speed tranny...

Fuel pump problem

Got all my wires ran , minus a/c plugs and 02' sensors.. Poured some fuel in the throttle body and got it to sputter like it was trying to start but just couldn't get enough fuel to pull it off.. I worked on getting the fuel pump to work for 2 days before I decided to pull the tank and check it out..I don't know how good these pics will be but the fuel pump is rotten from top to bottom ... It was bad , real bad.. I'm going to need a new one..
I followed some advice I read on another thread on the cam position sensor.. The writer wrote , he didn't have to move the cps to the drivers side , he just wired the new one up to the old harness..I'll see if it's going to work after i get a new fuel pump in.

Woot, glad you're making progress. I been thinking of dropping an 04-05 in mine when it goes the way of the dodo so I'm definitely keeping up on this thread

First off - Thank you for you're services in the Navy , thanks for the reply , and ole grey looks good.. It would look good with a star on the hood . If the cps don't work out on mine you might want to stick with the 5-speed transmission when you do you're swap.. We'll see soon,,

Update- I replaced the fuel pump - fuel rail - and hooked up wires to the 6-speed cps . It Idles like crap and turns the exhaust into a cherry red glow.. It seems like it's only firing on 4 cylinders ..I'm about to take it to the scrap yard myself.. OR put a 350 Vett engine in it and be done with this 4.0 and 6 speed transmission..
Anyone looking for a 6-speed transmission ?
