big red build

hey guys we are fixing to start a major upgrade atleast for me. this is my 16 year olds jeep and he bought a 1990 chevy with a solid axle conversion today we plan on putting the axles, motor, 5 speed transmission and transfer case along with the fuel injection. we put corner guards tube fenders and rock rails on a couple weeks ago.
Any advice would be appriciated. here is a couple pictures of the jeep and truck. dana 44 upfront and chevy 10 bolt in the rear.

I would sell that truck, turn a profit and get some wrecking yard parts personally... Just seems like a nice truck to strip for half ton running gear? I think you will have to stretch the wheelbase to get that tranny and stuff in it. All that work and you might as well go with tons off the bat. And personally I prefer an auto in my wheelers. I always ran 5 speeds till my last couple toys. I will never go back to a stick shift wheeler. Im sure you will get input from people with a lot more experience than me. They will probably make me look like an a$$ but thats my 2 cents. lol. Good luck and have fun!. It looks like you've already got a nice start on that jeep, keep up the good work!

the trucks cool but the tires are way to big for it the steering box is shot it was for sale for about 3 months so my son made a deal on it he will part it out when we get what we want off. the good things are it has a strong tbi 350 no leaks or smoke with practically new 5 speed and transfer case brand new battery water pump and starter solid front dana44. this is really my sons project and he loves his jeep. We thought about a 5.3 but decided the 350 was better in a jeep seeing the 5.3 hits peak power and torque above 4000 rpm and the 350 is closer to 2000 rpm. Any advice on the tbi swap would be a great help thanks again for reading.

no doubt that someone sells a painless wiring kit just for this situation..either that or get a wiring diagram for the truck and trace everything down to use the truck components needed..I personally prefer using a carb and simple electronic ignition for simplicity in installation as well as for future troubleshooting

we are doing the swap basically to get away from a carb they tend to stall when on steep inclines for awhile and the you have to get to level ground to get fuel to them. Plus this is a great learning experience for my son and me.

yes it will be a great experience..I have had some great times doing such things first with my son and now with my grandsons....and with my wife , she loves it too

That is exactly correct!!!! I had to pull a very capable Toyota up a hill because he couldn't get fuel to the carb.

also, Painless Performance does make a wiring harness for this

ya i looked at the painless kit it was about $650. that would eat quite abit of his install funds. i went out and pulled the glove box and found that only 2 wires need to be plugged from the pig tails by the computer. i am going to move the computer and wiering harness to the engine bay tomarrow and get it back running then start sorting out the harness under the hood. So far it seems to be way to easy of a job to spend $650 on a harness but im not very deep into it yet.

That'll be a good swap once done, your son will be the envy of the school. At least he would have been at the one I went to lol
Lots of pre made harnesses out there, I'm using the painless a lot of other guys doing swaps right now on here are using fuel injection connection harness's. Mine came from summit its actually went up some since I bought mine about two months or so ago.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/prf-60101 $415 not sure what the others run maybe one of the guys will chime in. For radiator the champion conversion units look great. They sell them on ebay and amazon maybe some other places as well. Not sure on what transfer came behind the 5 speed but JB Conversions, Inc. has a sye for the 241 which came behind the auto trucks. The MORE mounts are wonderful but heard lots of good things about novak and advanced as well. Good luck on the swap!

He has a cool jeep he works at a parts house and isnt aloud to park out front anymore because they get more people calling about the jeep and coming in to ask about it than they do parts when the owner had to go out 3 times in one day to turn the led light bars on for people he told him he had to park in the back he got called to the office at school last year so the principal could talk heeps with him. We ordered the advanced adapter mounts for it.

We removed the motor transmision and axles from the donor truck plan on pulling the jeep apart this week and starting the install this weekend. Hope all goes smooth. we are using advance adapters motor mounts.

Hi, all its been a long process but we are getting close now my son dropped it off to have drive shafts built today alignment tomarow and exhaust friday and Saturday we will install the ladder bar and any other loose ends we find. He's excited and ready to drive it 8 weeks with out his jeep has been tough. He sent this picture to me this morning. Loaded up going to the drive shaft shop.

This turned out to be a massive job everything that went wrong went wrong. The Axle seals were shot so no lube so we completely rebuilt them all new bearings seals lock out hubs brakes lockright locker in the rear welded the front since he has lockout hubs 4.88 gears. We ended up replacing the new water pump with a new one that had a plug in the top for heater hoses, new altenater, power steering pump leaked after the install so we got a new one and a new gear box for a dodge durango supposed to be an upgrade New aluminum radiator (works great) new fan and clutch a/c delete pully. We have had fun working on it but glad were near the end.
