Chris's '90 YJ build thread

Well I brought my new old toy home today. It was quite the ordeal. This little guy has been sitting in the same spot on the guys driveway for at LEAST 9 years. There were indents with tire marks where it sat.

I changed the battery and it cranked right up. I told the guy that I bought a new cap and rotor for it, front pads and rotors, plugs and wires as a start. His response was its all 9 years new... we changed all that before we stopped driving it. It fired right up with a shot of ether. So far so good right? y
You're sadly mistaken.

I hit the brakes on the way home and the pedal sticks about halfway down... I can feel where the plunger stops making contact... Ohh boy the brakes are semi locked up. The good news is that it is able to still move. Ahh its only 5 miles I can drive througoh it right.. I mean I have new brakes and rotors anyway right........

Its smoking pretty bad... my son is getting a bit worried and cars are avoiding me. I start to hear this popping noise from the engine area, I either have a fire or I'm overheating.... Drive through it.. its getting rebuilt anyway right............ I called home and handed to phone to my boy and say repeat after me, " Honey, go to the shed... get the fire extinquisher and the hose." At this point I don't need to hit the brakes to stop... blue doesnt wanna move. Drive through, its getting rebuilt

My son gets this look on his face and repeats my words. I can hear my wives voice over the wind noise and the engine... this isnt going to be a fun home coming for old blue.

I get into my driveway and blue dies, smoke is pouring from the hood and both front wheel wells, I grabbed the hose just in case some of the 20 year old oil and grease caked on doesn't catch on fire. My boy has the extinguisher. I get her cooled down, and the brakes stop boiling off the water as it hits, The engine starts and still runs, which by the way other than the overheat runs like a TOP!

Crisis averted, old blue will live to fight another day!

I need a master cylinder, thermostat, trans rebuild kit for a AX-15, and some other assorted stuff. I'm doing the Fred Flinstone also as there is a HUGE hole in the drives side foot well. All in all I'm happy with my purchase. Its exactly what $650 buys

The build continues Friday,
Chris

I've got a 90 YJ, as well. Bought it for 1500 from a guy in Lancaster, PA. I do like it, but it has needed tranny work (synchro rings), a new clutch m/c and slave cylinder. I upgraded the carb to a Motorcraft 2100, which was a GRAND thing to do.

Keep us posted...

Not related to the thread but it will accelerate the progress... My daily driver has developed an engine knock at idle and its getting BAD! I'm pulling the valve covers in the morning to see if anything is obviously loose, but am not optimistic. That means I'll be working on the Jeep with a bit of urgency. WIsh me luck that I dont find anything else major wrong with my YJ!

Update:
The daily driver is done... I have no idea what let loose but I have pistons slappin valves.

Progress on the Jeep:
Master Cylinder:In
Brake lines to proportioning valve: In
Thermostat: In ( as well as radiator flushed)
Battery and mounting new cable ends: In
Brake line leak: Located, I have the parts and will be pulling it apart tomorrow
Trans: 3 & 4 syncro are gone but no immediate plans on fixing it (granny shift powers activate!)
Rear brakes: Need attention
Front brakes: Still in boxes in the back of my dead daily driver
Leaf Springs: Here is a new one as of today. All 4 leaf springs need repair or replacement. The left rear only has 2 good leafs left!
Interior: needs to be gutted as it has a mold problem
Soft top: Figure out how the thing goes together, its in pieces!

Well thats my list for now, wish me luck tomorrow,
Chris

I love those kind of rides!

My favorite was towing home a 78' regal with a ford escort at 16 years old. I was in the back, stearing the regal and the stearing wheel came off. I started drifting into oncoming traffic and right about the time the rear tires of the escort started to hop to the left I was able to slam it back on after a few trys and then regain control... Oh the adrenaline!!! I can only imagine what you felt!

My Dad a mechanic of 46 years advised me to get my YJ running and stopping good and then put a for sale sign on it so I can buy a nicer one. This is my first jeep and I'm already getting attached. Its a rust bucket though so I may follow his advice here. No work today on blue, it was too hot and I had to work in the shop at work today which meant at least 120 deg temps all day.

Tomorrow promises more of the same!

I went out this morning to start finishing up the brake lines on the YJ so I can drive it tomorrow and found another problem. I've got a large puddle of fresh coolant under the radiator.

I checked all the connections I just made when I changed the thermostat and they are all good. I found that my radiator is leaking on the passenger side... its almost like the Jeep gods don't want me to drive this thing!

Ahh well more money thrown at the pig!

Ohh boy.... I was beating on a bolt yesterday and put a hammer through the rear frame rail at the shackle on the rear.... I've got a 6" section of frame on either side of the rear that is trash..... I know they make rail ends for it but how far up is too far to save?

I no longer own a Jeep Wrangler. One of the parts delivery drivers had a friend that was looking for a daily driver, he got my number and the kid offered me the right price for the Jeep.. I doubled my total investment with parts and now the search is on for another one! I may have to change my screen name though LOL!

Sorry man! But think of all the $$$$ you can save now!

Hope you find one that did not spend its days in the rust belt!

The YJ ws pretty bad and in the long run it was the right decision to dump it. I'll find another one... that is certain as I've always wanted a jeep as a daily driver and toy! Here is crossing my fingers.... I have a neighbor who has one burried in his garage and its been there for at LEAST 9 years. I'm not sure the condition or if he'd be willing to part with it. I'm positive its an old CJ though. I may have to wander over tomorrow to see if he'll sell it
