Custom Console Build! (Maybe...)

Hey guys,

I've been thinking for a while that I want a fancy console for my Jeep like all my fire buddies have to hold 10000 radios and light switches in their fords and such, but of course no one makes one for my 20 year old Jeep...so of course, that sounds like a challenge and is shouting for me to make one fancier and cheaper than any console that someone has bought...should be pretty easy, but just wanna put up a thread for anyone who has a similar idea or suggestions. I'll attach a picture of my rough, rough draft of it. Thanks guys!

For any guys who are interested in the specifics, the plan is to have:
-Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7" w/ separate bluetooth keyboard (to function sort of as a CAD system)
-Motorola CDM1250 UHF Radio
-BCT15 Scanner
-BCT8 Scanner
-6-12 Switches for various lighys/power supplies
-Equal/More storage inside than I have now

I like the idea .. subscribed.... Have you thought of using the mototrbo 6550 or the xtl 5000 instead of the 1250 ? Might get better bang for your buck... Just my .02. Good luck.

I gotta ask, why a BTC8 and 15? The 8 does less than the 15, and nothing special from it, right?

Thanks for all the response guys! @blueridgeyj & silver rubi...yes, I have thought about these...only reason I plan on using the radios listed is cause thats what I got and I dont want to spend too much money...However, I do plan to use removable mounting plates so that I can easily switch out radios or rearrange them. I'll check out DD's too, I'm gonna guess that I'll probably stick to making my own though because I dont have too much money to dump into a new console, also I kinda like the feeling of building something myself!

Anytime man. Just curious because I'm looking at radios for mine... I'm getting the bcd996xt and the mototrbo 6550/xtl5000. Along with cb and Ham lol

With all that electronic gear are you going to run duel batteries and will you have to install a heavy duty alternator? I'm just looking for some advice for when I start my build. Thanks...Gunny Out!!

+1.

I like the digi trunking but thats beyond my needs, so I'm leaning to the 15. I thought you might know something I didn't about the 8, lol. Glad to hear you will be d-i-ying, I love homebrews.

SilverRubi, fwiw I love my Yaseu FT2900R. It is only a 2M single band, but imo is the best single band out there. Very rugged and you will be hard pressed to find a place you can't reach out from.

Radios in recieve (RX) use a very small amount of energy. You could probably run about 30 before you matched a serious stereo in consumption, assuming they werent transmitting (TX). Even if they do, you wont be TXing all of them at once. While TXing and jacked up, my radio pulls a max of about about 14A (about the same as my highbeams draw constant or a couple amps less).

Some guys may have to upgrade for their wiggle/EMS lights, not sure about that though.

I'm going to be running dual batteries.
My full list of equipment:
4 Whelen PAR 36 Interleaved super LEDs with white driving mode and red warning override. , 2 on windshield brackets and 2 on the front bumper
4 Feniex Titan 100s clear LEDs for offroad lighting , 2 under the windshield brackets and 2 on the rear bumper
2 Feniex Cannons red LEDs , in the rear taillight assembly
1 Feniex Cobra red/red , over the rearview mirror
1 Whelen HHS2200 / WiredHDH Flat Switch Panel System , mounted in an inconspicuous undetermined location
1 Uniden BCD996XT , mounted in a custom overhead bracket
1 Kenwood TM-D710A , mounted in a custom overhead bracket
1 Motorola Mototrbo 6550 / Astro XTL 5000 , mounted in a custom overhead bracket
1 Cobra 29 LX BT CB , mounted in a custom overhead bracket

Hence the reason I'm going to run duals. I'm going to be designing a console for the rear of the jeep that will have a flip up lid. The radios themselves will be mounted to the underside of the lid and the radio heads will be mounted on the custom bracket. I think I'm going to put the dual battery setup there as well.

Blueridge.. I'd be interested in your thoughts on my setup, but I don't want to hijack the thread.

Silver rubi, that sounds like an awesome setup! Do you have the feniex cobras right now? I've been thinking about picking up a couple myself, they seem pretty good for the price...if you do have em let me know how you like them (I'd be running blue all around but I'm sure it wont be too different in brightness etc from your red).

Also, to answer all the battery questions,
I already have all these radios in the car...all are hard wired straight to the battery...as BlueridgeYJ said, RX radios dont take up a whole lot of battery power...one time I forgot to turn off my BCT8 over night (over 12 hours), and the car started right up...as for the CDM1250, it Tx at 40 watts if I remember correctly, so that will drain the battery much quicker.

Right now I have all the radios listed, plus 2 12" Kickers on a 600watt amp, and I have no issues with one stock battery and stock alternator.

Here are a couple of pictures of the 3D model I did of the console in Google SketchUp...not 100% accurate measurements cause I haven't taken 100% accurate measurements, but pretty darn close!

That is pretty cool man. What media are you constructing it out of?

You got me thinking about a similar setup. I haven't sketched it out yet, but I am thinking a 2 radio din (CB & scanner) covered by a flip lid that will rest a samsung 7" tablet when opened and allow access to the radios. Close it up when gone. Really cool idea.

I like that idea! I've got my mind set on metal, probably somewhere around 22-20 gauge, painted flat black all around.

I actually just found a steal on a Motorola CDM1550, so I just picked that up...so I think i'm gonna ditch the BCT8 and go with:
-CDM1550
-CDM1250
-BCT15

Well, you can ditch it over here.

That sounds like a very capable comms setup, lol. Most firetrucks round here don't have all that. Down in Piney River they are jumping for joy because Albermarle Co (or City of Cville one, I forgot which) just gave em a 1954 pumper truck enabling response to 2 simoultanious calls.

Haha, I'm not afraid to admit that I am definitely a wacker...if you guys are interested, I've already pulled it out of the car...I was planning on listing it on eBay for $100 in the next few days, but if you're interested I can do $85 shipped (W/AC Power cord, hard wire DC cord, antenna, and I can program it for your area if you don't want to do it yourself) for a fellow WF member/Fire/Ems guy...bought it refurbed from Uniden for $130+ shipping...PM me in the next few days if you're interested or want a pic/video of it, otherwise I'll prob just throw it on EBay/CL.

Only issue I see is you would be able to run top off. You would need a weather cover and then you would also have to worry about theft

That is true...usually if I'm going anywhere pretty sketchy I won't take the top off at all...a cover is definitely something to think about though.
