Frame Removal

Hey whats up guys?Iam new to WF and to the wrangler vision.I own a jeep yj 92 when i bought the car in late may this year it was my second car ever buying i never knew anything about a frame, but to make a long story short i bought the car for 2000 and late on the frame broke off on one side so its literally on a slant on one side as if i got a flat.it broke off in late august.i decided to save it.i found out the frame cost 2500 also with some other parts needed about 3000 on quadratec.I just wanted to know what tools will i need to take off the tub and engine etc to transfer on this new frame.i want to do all the work me and a couple of friends.just want to know the tools i need before starting the project.i am using my jeep as a daily driver and for offroad use so any other parts suggestions are helpful thanks.Any help?

frame replace

for not much more money you could find a clean wrangler with a solid frame and use yours for parts. If the frame is that rusty you have a lot more issues than you have noticed. living in NYC you are located near some decent states to pick one up. Surf the craigslist's and I am sure you can find one. I picked up my 94' from PA with a clean frame and body for $2800.00 or look for a project somone started and did not finish with the frame in good shape. they are out there. Good luck

I'm with Scrambler on this you could pick up another YJ for less than that with a good frame and have extra parts.

And post a fullsize pic of your avatar. Is it your jeep in it?

Welcome to the forum.

i didnt want to be the first to ask for the pic but yea it would um help us um think of what you could um do about your situation. and i would agree you could pick up another jeep for that price and use yours for parts or sell stuff off of yours to make your cash back.

sorry to say they're probably right. if the frame is that bad, all the body mounts will probably be shot, its probably to late to save it.

but you could find a decent used frame for around $500 usually

as far as the project, it doesn't take many special tools to take the body off, you will need torx bits, big breaker bar, bfh, and pb blaster for yours. the hood, fenders and grill come off seperate, and you'll need a way to hoist the body. i used an engine hoist, i didn't think that would work.

you can check out my build if you like, i'm half way done, just got my frame finished and ready to build suspension, i'm pretty sure there's pics of removing the body. good luck.

Suggestions

Hmm all ideas sounds good i was thinking off more going in the direction of buying someone elses project like a rolling chassis or bare frame .I looked around and seen other jeepsters reinforcing there frame, if i was to buy a rolling chassis and wanted to use my jeep also for trails is it recomended. i think my tub is in a okay condition the only thing i notice that was bad is that the floor boards where starting to rot and make small holes but that can be welded.my jeep right now is in quebec, canada at a lot i am going to send more pics i dont really have any ,but from what i remember the most of the skid plates where rotted but i wont be using them anyways beacuse i wont last a second on the trails with that.i also wanted to put a mopar engine in it like a 360 ,i seen sometimes an extra torque could help you out on the trails, am i wroung or right? yea but if anything cant i buy the body mounts from quadratec? thx guys for the advice . ps girlfriends friends

get that frame fixed before worrying about axles. we need to know your intentions on wheeling, how big do you wanna go? tons of options. you can build your current axles up and handle 33" tires pretty well, wouldn't really get to crazy with lockers in them though. next step is dana 44 axles, most reasonable, and more common. and up from there

Hey guys in about two weeks i should start my build, i just needed some info before i start buying stuff. Now
1) when i buy a frame does it matter if i use a frame that had a 4cyl ?i have a 6 cyl.
2)i heard the cj and yj have the same tubs ,so do they have the same frame?
3)When i buy a used one and it has some rust ,if i grind it off and put some of that por 15
is that good enough?or should i get someone to weld more metal to strengthen it?
4) Exactly what tools are needed to swap frames ?I know i need an engine Crane and a breaker bar.But anything else because i have no tools at all.
5)Anyone have tools for sale or frame ?
6) if my body mounts are shot, do i buy new ones?
Lastly any minor upgrades i can do without modifying something else?
Thanks guys.

YjMopower;316123]Hey guys in about two weeks i should start my build, i just needed some info before i start buying stuff. Now

1) when i buy a frame does it matter if i use a frame that had a 4cyl ?i have a 6 cyl. yes and no, the motor mounts will be different, this can be cut and rewelded to fit your application
2)i heard the cj and yj have the same tubs ,so do they have the same frame? no, cj frame was weaker
3)When i buy a used one and it has some rust ,if i grind it off and put some of that por 15is that good enough?or should i get someone to weld more metal to strengthen it? yes it will be fine, as long as there's no rot, they will all be rusty
4) Exactly what tools are needed to swap frames ?I know i need an engine Crane and a breaker bar.But anything else because i have no tools at all. thats a little scary. you'll need good torx bits, metric and standard sockets, pb blaster and tons of regular hand tools.
5)Anyone have tools for sale or frame ? sears and ebay
6) if my body mounts are shot, do i buy new ones? absolutely
Lastly any minor upgrades i can do without modifying something else?
Thanks guys. be more specific on that.

Well I never done this before so I figure I have no tools ,Upgrades like giving me a lift, I was looking at quadratec stuff they had up to 3inches of for body mounts but i think you would need to modify something at that level maybe the 2 inch?any other upgrade that i can use later on just want something to start off with. Another curious question iam very enthusiastic on starting but on what level of hardness will this be ?any tips, a bought a couple of manuals if that helps.

no 3 inch body lift. i don't like any, but most will say 1" max. its a good little task, the difficulty will be in rust and seized bolts, and just keep track of nuts and bolts, and wiring.

Yeah dont loose any they a pain to replace, theres an easy way to get your body off the frame, if you have a engine crane, and are buying new body mounts, Id just cut the bolts and use your engine crane to remove the rest of it

This has been posted before but it's about the quickest way I have seen to separate a Jeep from it's frame.

i lifted my tub off with the engine crane. or you could have about 4-6 guys help you out. or jack it up high enough on some tall jack stands and roll the frame out. be careful when you start moving the chassis out, most likely something will still be connected that got overlooked.

Did you get a frame yet?

I've got a YJ frame that's been fully restored with front cage mounts welded on and a ton of other YJ parts I was gonna get rid of.

I'm in michigan, but you can get it for cheap cause I want my garage back.

For starters I'll give you the frame for $350
