High idle engine stays on

I have an 87 4.2 and I was driving to work and my idle was very high, like 2500 when I was at a stop light with the clutch in, then when I shut it off, it wanted to stay on, the rpm gauge went everywhere and then it shut off

Sounds like the choke is sticking on it. Get some carb and choke cleaner and spray it up good, see if the butterfly in the carb is moving freely. After its clean, coat all the moving linkages except for the internal ones, with WD40 or silicone spray. I use a silicone with graphite in it, works well to keep the linkages lubed.

X2 also check vacuum leaks, but that sounds like stuck choke.
