indrocz28's Build thread

So as some of you may know, I have been working and working on my 1991 YJ doing the engine swap and everything, and got it running and driving finally.
Well have had it for sale for the week on Craigslist, trying to decide if I wanted a streetable YJ or TJ that I could get in trade for this one.

Then about 5pm this afternoon I found this beautiful 1990 4.2L I6 5spd Wrangler in Houston. I texted the guy if he still had it and if he was interested in a trade.
He asked for pictures and info, so I sent him everything.

And came home with this:

Exactly what Chris said!

For me to really be happy with it, I would have had to tear everything all apart and re-build it how I wanted it. Mainly the whole rear suspension setup and the motor mount perches.

Hope you don't mind Chris, but I'm going to borrow a few things from your build thread over time while I do this jeep.

Today I removed the front sway bar and both track bars. What a chore, on jack stands. Lol
After that, I replaced an inside door handle and a rear steel brake line.

Was wanting to do the Butter Bypass, but I didn't have any more extra wire laying around so I won't be getting to it.

Sunday will consist of re adjusting the headlight dimmer switch, and then looking into my intermittent dash lights at night. Lol

Nice find,it looks clean and you found one with factory air. I drove four hours one way to Houston and bought a 89 about two weeks ago. I started tearing it down the first weekend. Ill try to get some pics up now that it can move under its own power again. I sure could use your help if all your vacuum lines are still in place. I have a couple of dead ends from the PO.

As of now my vacuum lines are all there until I do the Nutter Bypass.

I'll do what I can to help.

I drove down from College Station to Pasedena and traded my other YJ for this one.
The air turns on, but I think it needs recharged. So I'll convert it to R134 soon.
Need one knob for the switch.

Doing the Nutter Bypass tomorrow, hopefully that will cure my crazy running and idling issues.

Went wheeling today in it for the first time. Only mods are 235/75R15 tires, sway and track bars removed. I made it through and over everything that everyone else with lifted, locked and larger tired' rigs made it through. Never needed a tug forward or backwards!

Did the Nutter Bypass this morning, set timing at 8*. Makes a big difference in her running.

Okay, I've searched, and done the recommended steps from the forums and peoples youtube videos.

First off, she is a 1990 YJ with a 4.2L, 5spd, and a reman carter carb (dated 2011)

Jeep ran pretty decent until yesterday morning when I accidentally barely bumped the distributor while looking at the orange and purple wires to do the Nutter Bypass.Had issues all day yesterday with idling when pushing on the brakes.

That is where my issues started.
It started running rough and idling funny, so I got out my timing light, followed the instructions and re-set the timing. Seemed to be fine until I drove it down the block and at every stop sign it would die. WTF..

So today I did the Nutter Bypass, followed instructions on doing it and setting the timing to 8*. Ran like a champ. It was awesome for about 2 miles, then same issue. Every time I push in the clutch and push on the brake pedal to stop it idles rough and dies. I have somewhat remedied it by adjusting the throttle stop (center long screw) so that it idles just under 1000rpm, and it isn't currently dying. Still have a slight misfire.

So, what I am noticing though is that when I am pushing on the brakes and the engine rev's are coming down, that is when it goes below idle speed and wants to spit, sputter and die.

Here is what all I did: Today I did the Nutter bypass, replaced the Ignition Control Module to get rid of misfire (didn't work), Replaced the distributor cap & rotor, Replaced spark plugs (didn't work), Replaced ignition coil post connector to remedy misfire as the old terminal connectors were rusty (didn't work),new air filter, plugged open ports on stock air cleaner, got rid of emissions hoses and sensors and plugged all vacuum ports not needed. Just pretty much bare bones carter. I don't have any vacuum leaks.

Only vacuum lines hooked up are for brake booster, distributor timing advance, PCV, and the vacuum to the electric choke. Idles pretty decent in open loop, however a slight misfire. Seems that the misfire gets worse at closed loop.

Still has a misfire somewhere, and have pulled plug wires and it hasn't changed, so perhaps it is in the distributor. Once in closed loop and running above idle while driving, it runs great, however once in a while I can still feel it misfire.

Also, ran through 16.3 gallons of gas in 166 miles, and it ran me out on the side of the highway. So a 1h 45m trip took me 3h 45m to get back to base from the fiance's place.

Eventually I am going to probably swap to a motorcraft 2150 or 2100 with 1.08 venturi's and do the HEI distributor swap. But I don't understand why I am having issues when I am extremely mechanically inclined (went to automotive college, and it was my career for years until I joined the Army).

Thank you for your help.

Jeff

Okay, seems like I finally got all of that ^^ previous bull crap straightened out.

Later in June I will do a CRT HEI distributor swap, but it is running good now that I swapped to a Motorcraft 2150 carburetor. See Here: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f8/anot...ue-245479.html

Alright alright. Well, it has been long enough since I have added any updates or anything to this thread about my Little YJ.... So here it is:

After I got the carb straightened out I installed the CRT HEI Dizzy:

Got the timing all set up, fastened her down, and haven't touched it since!

I do need to get a new idle stop screw for my carb though. It moves every once in a while.

Next was to add the lift. I went with a 4" Rough country lift, and then added the transfer case drop as well. Also did new motor mounts.

With that I added the set of 32x11.50x15 Pro Comp all-terrain tires and chrome wheels I picked up locally for $300!

So, time came to go wheeling!

And today I scored a set of 2012 JK wheels from a rubicon, some spacers, and new BFG KM2 Mud Terrain tires for a great price!

I hate to sound like a complete Newbie, but what is a Nutter Bypass? I have seen that term on several posts and haven't a clue what it is.

The Nutter bypass is where you run some wires to bypass the computer and hook the ignition module straight to the distributor in these old carbureted YJ's.

Thanks iowncars!

Its about to go down again for the next line of upgrades and much needed maintenance assuming work picks up some. Sales is a hard business when there is no traffic coming through the door....
