I assume I will need the new bellhousing, what about flywheel? And clutch components? Will be a 5 speed stick.
My last post has a link to the bell you will need.... click on the Search results link....

Make sure you only buy one that is newer then 1994 for the external slave.

Use a clutch master and slave from a 95 yj. It is an external slave like the dakota. You cant use the dakota slave as its larger diameter and doesnt get enough flow to push the clutch in far enough(took me a while to figure that one out)

Picked up my donor this afternoon. Got it for $800, PO wouldn't budge on the price, but I think it's a good deal. Runs, drives, drove some 50 miles home, didn't skip a beat.

Awesome! Details, what year and when does the tear-down begin?

That's very similar to the donor I found at same price. $800 for 1997 jeep grand cherokee 5.2L with 100k miles. I still haven't bought it bought it but your inspiring me to go ahead and jump in . The reason I'm hesitant is because it seems as though the only thing I can use off the cherokee is the engine. I don't think I can use the tranny or axles. It means a lot to get a donor you can drive and have there for motor parts, but I'd then have to sell or otherwise get rid of the rest...

What that meant to me was i ended up getting the engine for free. Actually profited. By the time i sold everything and scrapped the body i had the engine, all my money back plus about a hundred bucks.

I essentially have the same thought. I can part out the rest of cherokee and end up breaking even or better, especially after selling my 2.5L. I'm just having trouble figuring out what all I can actually use off of it. I know I can buy motor mounts and get the 5.2L in just fine, but I don't know if the 46RH 4-speed will work, if the manifolds will work, or if the radiator will work? I'd like to be able to swap an AX-15 in to keep a manual, but not sure if that can bolt on, read a little bit about dodge dakota bell housing possibly working, but nothing for sure? I'm also not sure if the motor can be positioned so I don't have to get new driveshafts either? I'd like to go ahead and buy this cherokee because it's a hard to find deal, but don't want to find it's better to go another direction and end up having to try and sell. Obviously I've still got a ton of questions to wade through before I get too much farther. Anybody know or have experience on that?

Just answered your other questions in the other thread.

Do it. Its really pretty simple. T-case bolts right to stock holes, position is the same. Can use either auto or manual trans, manual trans does add a few parts that have to be sourced from other rigs but its all mostly junkyard stuff and all either dodge truck, dodge dakota or jeep stuff.

Chevy guys will tell you that its better to go chevy but honestly the 5.2 is almost a plug and play deal its really much simpler than you think.

1996, so it's OBDII (the GC guys tried convincing me it's a PIA to convert the harness into my Jeep- I just think they don't want to see another unibody bite the bullet, but who am I to hog the whole thing? I just take what I need then share (scrap) the rest! ), and it runs absolutely beautiful. Fires right up.

It's got the D44A rear and the D30 front, with 3.73 gears. If I can't get my buddy to trade me his 8.8 (that he still has to put together for his TJ) for this 44A that has the gears he wants, then I may keep it, truss it, and use it. Maybe. Otherwise i'll just sell it and find an 8.8.

Still going back and forth on what gearing I want to go with for 35's, according to the gear calculators out there, 4.88 is what I would want to go with... Suggestions?

The front will be low pinion. No good. Try and sell it or scrap it.

Gearing.. i have 4.10's it will power up most everything in 3rd gear 4 low. I am going to go to 4.88 when i swap axles and go to 35's.

With 4.10 and 33's im sitting about 2200rpm at 60mph 5th gear.

When i get some time i will post all my links i have saved, some will help some may not.

So sounds like maybe 4.56 will be the hot ticket. This thing cruises at 65mph 2000rpm no problems whatsoever.

I don't see what the fuss is with the HP and LP D30 axles. The bottom of the differential pumpkin is still going to be lowest part of the axle, and I've gotten hung up on it before.

4.56 or 4.88 with 35's would be just right. 4.10's i think would be a touch low.

Gears wont interchange between high and low pinion. The other issues with a low pinion is it will increase driveshaft angles and you surely dont want your driveshaft and u joints in the rocks. I have drug my front diff across rocks before then it drops off the other side. Would never clear if i had a low pinion. Its all not a huge deal but its surely a downgrade axle.

I have a D44 I planned on putting in the front anyways, if the D30 don't work out.

Also LP gears are weaker because of what side the gears run on (drive side and coast side). HP will give you better DS angle and keep the DS up higher.

Small insignificant update,

my Advance Adapters motor mounts are on their way in through the mail.

In the meantime, I've gone and done this:

Good thing too, I was getting too attached.

This is true. The magnum mates up to everything and makes life easier with wiring. But with magnums only producing 245hp and 5.3s putting out 300hp, I think that's why more people are drawn to the 5.3s instead.

I was wondering what happened to Xpress.

Did you know my Jeep was totaled?

I may have some parts you want...

Like an NV3550 and Bellhousing for a 5.2L....

Hello? Is this thing on?

245hp and 300ft lb torque is plenty for me. The thing gets up and moves in a hurry inside of the ZJ, why wouldn't it with a 5 speed inside of a Wrangler? It's a bulletproof engine too. Lots of people claim a lot of aftermarket parts but I'm having trouble finding any.

Maybe you guys can help out?

The 5.3 also gets a bit better fuel mileage. I am certainly not against the 5.3 and if i ever build another jeep i might just use one.

I havent looked for any aftermarket stuff yet though i probably will be looking for a touch more power now that i have a d44 front.

Its no slouch with the 5 speed, but more power is always nice.
